Alaska Cook Inlet Rigs – Offshore Oil Platform Placement for Microsoft Flight Simulator ( default 3D model )
I'm freezing downloads, as a recent change to MSFS 2020 seems to have removed POI_oil-rig, which this scenery is dependant on. I'll check after SU16, which is supposed to merge world data for 2020 and 2024, and see if there will be a replacement oil rig asset.
Thanks for understanding.
Description
This scenery adds all 16 oil platforms in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, between Kenai and Anchorage. This is an early version and will be a work in progress. The primary intent was to add rigs offshore for enhancing helicopter flying in multiplayer and to add visual checkpoints / landmarks in this area of the world.
Although the placement of the rigs is accurate, the scenery is currently using the default oil rig, which is not representative of the platforms in the inlet. Eventually, the default rig will be replaced with more accurate models of the Alaskan rigs.
Installation
- Extract bhd-acirigs.zip using WinZip, 7-Zip or WinRar.
- Place the entire bhd-acirigs folder into the Microsoft Flight Simulator Community Folder.
- Select Kenai as your start point (PAEN), Platform Osprey is right off the coast near the airport. Use the included map and navigation info to explore the area..
- Requires USA World Update to be installed from the Marketplace ( oil rig is part of update scenery content )
Known Issues v0.2.2
- Oil rig 3D models are not accurate to actual Alaskan platforms.
- Placement of rigs should be accurate, but orientation is a guess, based off best available info.
- Might experience -2/3 FPS spikes, but in general, not much performance impact.
Update v0.2.2
- Added KMZ file in documentation to add rig locations to Little Nav Map.
- Added 3D Oil Tanks to Valdez Terminal.
- Added Landable Helipads on all Oil Rigs
- Added Windsock to Helipad
- Added simple omni light near helipad and windsock
- Fixed modellib.bgl naming issue.
Update v0.3.0
- Added Helipads ( start position ) to all Rigs
ICAO names are fake / placeholder
"Airport" names are "Platform ...." - ie Platform Holly
Helicopters will start w engines running, since the marker is handled like a runway for airplanes.
Cleaned up some sloppy helipad placement ( railings clipping through pad )

Installed as described but when I enter my aircraft on one of the rig platforms it is either just the platform (no other structures) or it's not there at all (I'm floating in space).

Check to make sure you have both of the USA World Updates installed from the marketplace ( free ), esp the first one ( World Update 2 )... the default rig asset is part of that package and won't show up unless it's been installed...

Yep. I had it but never installed it. Thanks.

Just stopping by to say "THANK YOU" for your scenery work. Having lived in Alaska almost my entire life, it is nice to see the Valdez Oil terminal come to life in FS ;0)

it'd be nice to see a good scenery for the whole area - airport, town and oil terminal... what's there now just doesn't do the area justice ;)

Added a kmz file to the documents folder in the latest version - you can import that into LNM.

Raven ... can you tell us HOW you added landable helipads?
Yeah, it's pretty straightforwad. I just created a separate pad object in Blender, made sure the materials were tagged w collision ( MSFS properties ), then add the pad to the scenery. Place the pad object over the helideck built into the default oil rig model. You can then group both objects and duplicate it.
I'd hope Asobo would update and improve that asset for the Nov update since they're featuring helicopters. The oil rig really needs a lot more detail, and obviously collision ;)

I added POI markers - but only 1 per group of rigs, so the screen wouldn't get cluttered when there are 5-6 rigs next to each other. If you have markers turned on in Assists, they'll show up +/- 5.5 NM away.
