Do you like flying VFR and watching the World below you? Do you sometimes feel that something is missing? We Love VFR is here to help you. We Love VFR is a free add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator that adds thousands of new VFR-friendly objects. In this beta version, you get communication, radio, and tv antennas, chimneys, radar domes, construction cranes, and satellite/radio telescope dishes. I have plans for many, many more.

  • Over 130 000 objects placed in region 1.
  • Coverage of all Europe and part of Africa.
  • In this version mobile communication, tv and radio antennas, chimneys, radar domes, construction cranes, and satellite/radio telescope dishes.
  • Puffin AI* - correct placement and appearance of objects**
  • Over 100 custom models
  • Lower spec PC friendly
  • Much more planned
  • Yes, I know there are no cooling towers. Next update hopefully.
How to install?

Find your „Community” directory and just copy "a-puf-we-love-vfr-region1" there. That’s it. If you’re updating our addon I recommend removing the old version before installing the new one.
If you have conflicting addon refer to the included ReadMe file.

Warning: To get satellite dishes/radio telescopes you need "USA Points of Interest" installed. It's available in the marketplace for free.

It's not really a beta anymore but I don't have much time for testing so...

...don't be mad if you see any errors, just report them to me so I can fix them ;) If you see an object that you know but its appearance, join our discord and report it there. I'll try to add/fix it for the next version.

Known Issues:

  • in very rare cases there might be an office building instead of a chimney (I don't mean cooling towers, these are not implemented in the mod at all... yet). This is a case of mismatch data between Asobo and OSM and has to be fixed manually. Report it in comments or in discord.

*Not really AI. Just quite complex conditions, but AI sounds a lot better.
**Depends on data availability.

Will this be compatible with xyz scenery?

Hard to tell. But it can be. My mod is more like autogen expansion, so authors of more local sceneries have to make their mods compatible. Unfortunately, I can't do that. But it's really easy.
The author just needs to add exclusion under his custom object and then you, as a user, need to make sure We Love VFR is higher on the list in the 'Content.xml' file. You'll find that file 2 directories above your community folder. This file tells the sim in which order it should load addons.

Mast/radome/chimney in xyz is not in your mod. Can you add it?

Most likely - yes. You can add it by yourself by editing OpenStrretMaps. More detailed instructions are available at www.puffinflight.com, or report in on our discord
You can also leave me a comment with coordinates and some more details (if it's a mast or chimney try to find out how tall is it).

Where America?

Soon. Most likely with the release of v.0.5 for Europe.

Why can’t I see obstacle lights from the distance? / Why there is a visible light but not on top of the antenna?

For now, MSFS SDK for lights is very limited. I can’t create a light that will have a source visible from a distance. On the other hand, I can’t remove those red, clearly visible lights that Asobo has put in place of antennas. As soon as they expand SDK, I’ll fix that.

Why do antennas look fuzzy from the distance?

That’s something in the sim graphics engine, that for now can’t be bypassed. Original sim objects act exactly the same. I try to prevent it a bit with LODs, but it won’t be perfect. Maybe the DX12 will fix it someday.

Pretty empty over here.

  • Version 0.4.0b April 24, 2021

Added over 30000 chimneys! So far over 80 models, but there will be more.
    Reworked workflow and code.
Added tv/radio towers models for a range of 170-250m height.
Added collisions to almost all models.
    Rewritten airport detection.
Manually reviewed all chimneys over 280 m and masts over 250 m.
Manually reviewed all construction sites around airports.
Added country-specific code, so no more red/white masts in the UK for example.
Many more small fixes and tweaks.

    DATA UPDATE: 06.04.2021

  • Version 0.3.0b December 31, 2020

Placed around 1500 radar domes and satellite dishes.
Added around 33000 tower cranes on bigger construction sites.
Fixes and tweaks all around. I don't remember the details.
    DATA UPDATE: 29.12.2020

  • Version 0.2.0b November 14, 2020

Fixed LOD of some mast models. Added over 40 000 masts.
Added 2 new models for TV towers.
Added gray variants for TV masts.
Added masts that were marked as "way" instead of "node" in OSM.
Fixes and upgrades in algorithms. They should be more precise now.
Removed all masts placed in airport areas.
    DATA UPDATE: 14.11.2020

Just thought I'd post again my appreciation for this incredible add-on. I was flying over Cornwall this week and came across a gigantic mast on a hill that I thought was too tall to be accurate, but it turns out it's Caradon Hill mast and its the tallest mast in Devon and Cornwall at over 700 feet. I then googled the highest mast in England and turns out there are several over 1000 feet. I'm going to have to fly to Skelton to see the daddy of English masts and then go and find Europe's highest.

Never knew masts could be so fun. Will go hunting big chimneys next!

Seeing that people like you have fun with my addon makes it all worth it. Thank you.
Basically, all chimneys over 280m were placed manually and should be as close as possible to real-life as our semi-generic models allow. There is even a special one in Germany that has a colour variant named in my system as "acid" 😀 Plus I'd check out the area south of Giza, Egypt, where you'll find hundreds of chimneys at unusual brickyards.

I made some changes in OpenStreetMap. When can I see these changes in the mod? 😊
    • PuffinFlight
      7 day(s) ago
Most likely in the next version. I update the database before every release (unless I release a hotfix of some sort).
What area/objects did you cover in your edits? I'd like to check them out to see if the update mechanism works.
And thanks for updating the data!

There were two radio towers on the approach to runway 07 EPLL. I changed their tag to "navigationaid".

BTW, is there a chance for cooling towers? 😊 We have many of them in Lodz.

Thank you for your great work.

Great, these definitely shouldn't be antennas.
Cooling towers are planned for the next major update, but I have an experimental approach that I want to try out for them and it depends on it working. We'll see. First Region 2, next cooling towers.

Construction cranes are a bit too much, lots of them got added to The Netherlands where there shouldnt be any, In places like Rotterdam they are inside buildings, around Lelystad tthere are like 4 in a row at places there shouldnt be any. Hope this gets toned down a bit. Love the rest of the pack though

      9 day(s) ago
I'll see what I can do about it. For now, you can easily remove them, just by removing the ConstructionCranes.BGL file from mods scenery folder.

I've seen a few cranes in literally just a field which seemed weird, but I've also seen them on construction sites which are really clever IMO. I guess it's like the autogen of blackshark, and sometimes gets confused by the terrain?
    • PuffinFlight
      6 day(s) ago
It's way simpler than that. Cranes in fields usually mean that Bing photos are outdated and there was construction started lately there. Unfortunately, I don't have data on when the Bing photo was taken as it is a part of an expensive API, so I can't compare the timestamp of OSM data to the photos.
I remove all old construction sites, created more than 5 years ago. But I think I'll also remove all that were created recently, let's say 1 year ago. That may give us better results.

Compliments for your effort. I really enjoy it. If I may give you input for future development. Please add cargo- and oil seavessels in the major harbours. F.I. Rotterdam. The largest harbour of western Europe, many beautiful views but empty harbour and no sailing ships entering the entrance from sea. For me personnally this is a major step forwards. Ones again thanks for this project. Keep going!

      14 day(s) ago
I focus on data I can process from sources like OSM, FAA, or others. I doubt I can find any data on ship "parking spaces", but how knows. Maybe one day 😉

But there are things in harbours I could possibly upgrade in the future.

Must have addon for MSFS! I can't wait for other Building types (cooling towers and especially for Middleeurope churches).
Keep up the fantasic work! I can't wait for the other regions to come ...

Colling towers are confirmed. Unfortunately, churches are on hold. In UK World Update you can see Asobo added churches, so they can and will do it. Plus they do it the only proper way - by autogen. SDK for autogen is nonexistent, so my hands are tied and there is no point for me to try to invent the wheel again by trying to make churches without using autogen.

This is an absolutley fantastic mod, thank you. Is there a way of exluding one particular scenery? I have in my area, a radome that was not in your initial release. A detailed version was released that I have installed. Now that I have updated Puffin VFR I have a scenery clash.
I don't want to remove all radomes just this one particular one from VFR.
    • PuffinFlight
      14 day(s) ago
It depends on that "local" scenery. If it has an exclusion rectangle to remove everything underneath then it should work. Just check if in the "content.xml" file (2 directories above "community"😉 my mod is higher on the list than the one that adds this specific radome. This list should tell the sim the load order of mods.
Unfortunately, I can't make it another way around. I'm not able to detect if something sits on top of my scenery.
If it still doesn't work maybe try to contact the author of that scenery? There are mods that are made compatible with mine, by adding these exclusions and it works really nice.
