BGTL Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) - Image 1

    Description

Pituffik Space Base (/biːduːˈfiːk/, bee-doo-FEEK; Greenlandic: [pitufːik]; IATA: THU, ICAO: BGTL), formerly Thule Air Base (/ˈtuːliː/, TOO-lee), is a United States Space Force base located on the northwest coast of Greenland in the Kingdom of Denmark under a defense agreement between Denmark and the United States. As of 2025, about 150 United States service members are permanently stationed there, after the United States significantly reduced its presence from 6,000 personnel during the Cold War. Denmark was a founding member of NATO in 1949, and the 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement allowed the United States to operate the base under a NATO framework, as long as both Denmark and the United States remain NATO members. Under the agreement, the Danish national flag must be flown at the base to recognize that the base is on Danish territory, but the United States is allowed to fly its own flag alongside the Danish flag on the facilities it operates.

In response to American hybrid warfare against Greenland during the second Trump administration, Colonel Susannah Meyers, U.S. Space Force, the highest-ranking U.S. officer in Greenland and the base commander, said Trump's threats against Greenland "are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base", leading her to be fired by Trump.

It is the northernmost Department of Defense installation, 1,210 km (750 mi) north of the Arctic Circle and 1,524 km (947 mi) from the North Pole. Pituffik's Arctic environment includes icebergs in North Star Bay, two islands (Saunders Island and Wolstenholme Island), a polar ice sheet, and Wolstenholme Fjord. The base is home to a substantial portion of the global network of missile warning sensors of Space Delta 4, and space surveillance and space control sensors of Space Delta 2, providing space awareness and advanced missile detection capabilities to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the United States Space Force, and joint partners.

Pituffik Space Base is also home to the 821st Space Base Group and is responsible for space base support within the Pituffik Defense Area for the multinational "Team Pituffik" population. The base hosts the 12th Space Warning Squadron (12 SWS), which operates a Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) designed to detect and track ICBMs launched against North America. The base is also host to Detachment 1 of the 23rd Space Operations Squadron, part of the Space Delta 6's global satellite control network. The airfield's 3,000 m (10,000 ft) runway handles more than 3,000 US and international flights per year. The base is also home to the northernmost deep water port in the world.

    NAV-AIDS:
    - Thule VORTAC THT 111,000 MHz, Ch 47X
    - ILS 08 ITHT 109,500 MHz

Magnetic Variation is about -36 degrees.
Unlike most airports worldwide, the runway designations are based on true north, not magnetic north.

The detailed description is taken from English Wikipedia.

This is a WIP, with Version 2.3.0 the Air Base is considered to be completed about 90%.

    Known Issues:
    - Satellite image rather poor (It's a challenge to create satellite images at that latitude)
    - One nuclear bomb still missing

In MSFS 2024 there is no BGTL stock airport at all.
It's your decision whether you download it or not!
    It's very cold there !!!
The sun won't rise before February

As there is only little reliable information on the evolution of this airbase, everyone who has better knowledge, is strongly invited to share it with me.

Many thanks to the creators of add-ons which have been used as dependencies for this scenery.

For Installation you need to place the following packages in your community folder:
    - BGTL-pituffik-aerial-1
    - BGTL-pituffik-airport

I fly the MSFS2024 RCAF C-177 Globemaster III and this air base is one the destinations it uses, most recently for the military exercises with Greenland and other NATO countries. Thank you for this military air base!

I'm very new to Flight Simulator (though I played the original one in 1982 using monochrome green bulky PC monitors as a Baby Boomer). When you said, "It's FS 2024 native (not 2020 compatible)", does that mean if I'm just using a MS FS2020, then I shouldn't even try to download this? Or can I still try using a Ryzen 9 with RTX 5070 but FPS only between 30-40? Sorry, not really that techie. Whatever your answer, I may even have to ask my 30 y.o. adult son (Games Operations Specialist) to interpret it for me. Just playing (experiencing) this as part of my recent retirement as an X-Wing Starfighter Pilot of The New Republic.

Would you consider including the ILS for runway 08? According to Navigraph there should be one, freq. 109.5. There's also VORTAC (111.0) and TACAN (47X).

Did you use now the Belgium Brussels atomium 3 times as radar stations?

No, I don't know this, where is it?

Really nice job! I had the nicely done 2020 "Thule" version and that was great, but I appreciate the extra detail you've added here like the radomes.

I wonder if it's possible to adjust the LOD on the C-5 objects? They appear when I'm about halfway down the runway. I'd normally blame FS2024, but the C-5s don't pop up on the old Superspud 2020 version. (Still might be FS2024's fault, of course!)

Either way, really nice progress and I'm enjoying adding it to my Greenland scenery. Thanks for the hard work on this!

    Hi, thanks for your comment!

FS 2024 is very aggressive concerning LODs of scenery objects. If a model has only one LOD (LOD zero), it just may (!) vanish at a certain distance. This also happens to some MSFS stock objects (e.g. the 'Generic_Tower).
FS 2020 is more LOD tolerant, at the cost of performance at high distances.
In my scenery I use ChrisPiAviation's 'United States Military Aircraft Library'. Thanks a lot to ChrisPiAviation for this useful library, static military aircraft are rare in MSFS.
The C-5s of ChrisPiAviation's library show the 'suddenly pop-up/vanish' behaviour.
Firstly, I tried Superspud's Fs2020 Thule scenery in FS 2024. Despite being announced for FS 2020 only, it perfectly works in FS 2024. Superspud's C-5's work fine.
    Secondly, I included Superspud's C-5 from 'KXTA - Area 51 - Homey Airport - Groom Lake - Upgrade' in my scenery. I't doesn't show the pop-up/vanish behaviour.
Surprise: Both ChrisPiAviation's and Superspud's have a single LOD (LOD zero) only. Same for ChrisPiAviation's Sentrys which work perfectly. Don't really know what makes the difference for FS2024! May be there is one in the community who can help.
My solution: I'll use Superspud's C-5s from Groom Lake in my next update.

    Regards!

Awesome! Glad you found a solution. Otherwise, the scenery's been solid, and I'm excited to see the final tweaks.

Looking awesome! It's funny, because I thought the radars-for-gas-tanks were a sign that the previous BGTL scenery I was using had gotten it wrong.

Also, just wanted to let you know at least one person read and appreciated *all* of the known issues. :)

Five stars! This is great! I have been waiting for this since FSX! Thanks! It's good that it is going to be a work-in-progress. I can't wait for the updates!

It already looks great /msfs2024 :)/ Although there's no way to compare it with reality, because as I've noticed, it doesn't really exist on the internet. Can we count on compatibility with MSFS 2024?
Unfortunately, the topic of Greenland has recently become controversial, to put it mildly.

It's mainly based on Google Earth (actual and historical maps), Wikipedia, and some other public sources. It's FS 2024 native (not 2020 compatible). Buildings are from Microsoft stock air bases. Still looking for an airport map (e.g. for taxi designations). Danish Flag keeps flying.

Oh, right, I got confused with MSFS :)

Cool one. Everfrost beneath the runway makes this more interesting. There are a couple of nasty bumps on the taxiway near the low most inland building. V1.0
