    KILG - Wilmington Airport - Image 2

    Description

Wilmington Airport (ICAO: KILG) (formerly known as New Castle County Airport),  is located in New Castle County, Delaware.

The facility is five miles (8 km) south of Wilmington and approximately 30 miles (50 km) south of Philadelphia.  Avelo Airlines began regular service at KILG in February of 2023.

The Innaugural flight (Flight XP559), was from KILG to KMCO (Orlando International Airport) and featured a Boeing 737-7H4,  Registration N701VL.   Avelo founder, chairman, and ceo, Andrew Levy, accompanied the passengers on that innaugural flight.

This project contains custom PBR textured models created specifically for this project by Mamu82.  These models include the main terminal,  the control tower,  the main National Guard C130 Hangar,  Delaware Air National Guard Fire Dept Sta. 33,  the Atlantic Aviation FBO,  the Fly Advanced FBO,  the Flight Safety International facility,  and the corporate hangars located next to the tower.

This project also includes multiple freeware and payware models by authors credited later in this document.

This project makes use of 4 publicly available freeware model libraries.   If you chose to forgo them,  you won't see those particular features such as animated humans, some light sources,  small objects like vending machines,  etc.

Included with this airport is a folder named "KILG-TreeFix",  this mod file is composed of terraforming polygons that fix the blocky photogrametry trees around the airport (and a large portion of New Castle County Delaware).

This airport includes a GSX Pro profile named "KILG-GSXPRO.ini".  GSX Pro users should place this file in %APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX\MSFS.

Enter "%APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX\MSFS" in a windows search box to locate the directory.    Users without GSX can just delete the profile.

Some of areas of this project and some of the buildings are considered place holders.  For example,  the "Major Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III National Guard/Reserve Center" will likely be modeled.   IRL it's used to train Army helo crews.

    P.S.
Things to look for while you're visiting KILG.   Thanks to Mamu82,  a tractor cuts the grass near the terminal every morning from 6:20am to 10am.   Also the Airport Speedway is just 2000ft west of KILG (on your left as you depart RW 1),  and Mamu has animated the Midget sprint car races.

    KILG History

Construction began on what was Delaware's First Public airport in 1941, the Greater Wilmington Airport.

The airport was taken over by the United States Army Air Force after the Pearl Harbor attack in December.

In 1942 the Army leased the airport for one dollar a year,  and renamed it the "New Castle Army Air Base".

The Army hastily built seventy-nine buildings in ninety days, 300 in a year. The base housed 5,000 personnel. From here, bombers and fighters came and went from Europe, and C-54 Skymasters ferried supplies to India. Little, if anything, survives of the wartime facilities. A control tower and terminal were built postwar (1954–1956, W. Ellis Preston). The terminal has lost some of its original touches, but retains colored terrazzo floors and plate-glass windows. Nationwide, few terminals of this vintage survive intact.

The base fascilitated the movement of aircraft to the British and other Allies. Members of the historic Women Air Service Pilots (WASP) served as test and ferry pilots and towed targets for student gunners. There is a statue today at the airport that honors the women of the WASP who served their country in the time of need.

After the war ended, control of the airport was returned to civil authorities. A joint-use agreement was made between the United States Air Force and New Castle County authorities for a portion of the airport being retained for an Air National Guard Base. Trans World Airlines (TWA) operated a large overhaul base for its overseas planes at the airport until 1957 when the airline moved it to the Kansas City Overhaul Base which became the basis for today's Kansas City International Airport.

Delaware's first airline flights were operated by TWA and American Airlines at Wilmington in late 1947.

By 1967, Eastern Airlines was operating Douglas DC-9 jet service into the airport with nonstops to New York Newark Airport, Philadelphia Airport, and Washington D.C. National Airport as well as direct flights to Atlanta and Charlotte.[8]

Allegheny Airlines also served Wilmington. In 1968, AL had four daily departures using their F-27s nonstop to Philadelphia, Washington's National Airport, Atlantic City, and Trenton. In 1969, Allegheny no longer flew F-27s and changed the four departures to Convair 580 prop-jets with two to DCA, one to PHL, and one to ACY.[9]

Can someone else take the project over?

Any chance we might see this in 2024? This is an awesome scenery.

Great work! Any chance you could update the main terminal? The parking lot is extended a little further towards A3, the hotel was torn down and that entire lot is now parking. As well as an additional 2 spots (A4-5) on the north side of the parking lot

finally got around to checking this out fully - absolutely stunning work!

I would very much like to have this excellent scenery installed in my MSFS as I have a deep personal history with this airport going all the way back to the 142nd Fighter Squadron Del ANG. I also instructed at the field in later years. I had lunch just yesterday with the daughter of Col David McCallister. It's his F86 standing gate guard at the airport today.
I hesitate to attempt the installation as there doesn't seem to be a step by step with paths to accomplish this and I don't want to foul up my sim installation as I test for add on developers.
If you could be so kind as to email me EXACTLY what I need to do and in what order I need to do it so I can safely install what's needed I'd love to have this airport installed in the sim.
    Thank you very much,

This looks great! Never thought I'd see a proper depiction of New Castle airport in the sim. Lots of care went into making this.

Top notch airport! I love msfs for this reason. Smaller, beautiful airports are now represented. Exceptional details, both in textures and objects. Much better than some payware. Thank you!

THANK YOU! I've been waiting for someone to take a shot at this airport! It looks great! May I suggest some future enhancements? It is a bit frame heavy, so maybe remove some ground objects to help performance? Maybe update some textures to help it feel older and used, as opposed to the pristine condition it is currently in? Also, the toolbar push back wouldn't work for me since the field wouldn't open with the tugs on stand. Not sure if that's within your control or not though. Stand 1 and 2 didn't work. But either way, 5 out of 5, well done and thanks again!

I was wondering why I have pink square textures covered on a lot of my buildings including the tower. I've installed all dependencies. Any thoughts on this?

I'm not sure. I just downloaded the latest version, unzipped it, and installed it. I'm not seeing any pink areas. Pink areas usually indicate missing textures, or a gpu driver issue.

I am getting an error message that I believe is indication an attempted file extraction has too long a pathway file name. Part is due to my directory structure, but the particular json filename is also extremenly long.

    Cannot create
