Asobo Robin DR400-100 Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default  Asobo Robin DR400/100 Cadet aircraft.  This mod is primarily aimed at improving the flight model of this aircraft, providing a more realistic flying experience that is much closer to the actual aircraft.  Multiple changes have been made to the engine and flight model parameters, as well as the aircraft weight and balance, which are all detailed in the Change Log file included under the Documentation folder.

The DR400/100 Cadet is an economical two seat version of the Robin DR400 aircraft family, with a 108 HP engine providing a cruising speed of about 215 km/hr. (115 kts), and a service ceiling of about 12,000 ft.  It is very easy to fly, and has a large unobstructed wrap-around canopy that provides excellent visibility for sight seeing.

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-dr400 folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Robin DR400/100 Cadet aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will continue to use all previous aircraft Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

Thank you so much for this mod. I really enjoy flying the DR400, I've had the Just Flight DR400 for P3D and I always enjoyed that plane. It makes me so happy to see you made a Realism mod for the MSFS plane (I was one of the people asking for this). I greatly appreciate your efforts, once again.

    Thank you!

Merci beaucoup pour votre travail de dr 400 . Dommage que la verrière n'est pas fonctionnelle , cela serait parfait .

The new V1.3.0 is absolutely amazing! The trim is similar to the real-world DR400. Thank you so much! There are some real-world RPM-Flaps-Speed-VS dependencies. Cruise: 2300 RPM, Flaps up, about 100 kts, 0 ft/min. Cruise descent: 2300 RPM, Flaps up, about 120 kts, -500 ft/min. Initial approach: About 2000 RPM, Flaps 1, 80 kts, 0 ft/min. Intermediate approach: 1700 RPM, Flaps 2, 70 kts, -500/700 ft/min. Maybe you can improve the last one in your next Update? 1700 RPM and Flaps 2, 500-700 ft/min. descent is in V1.3.0 about 64 kts (no wind) ... maybe a tiny correction for -500 ft/min. 1700 RPM instead of 1800? :-) But hey, that's just by the way - I really appreciate your work and it makes the DR 400 to a perfect student pilot aircraft in the MSFS now.

Thanks for this great feedback... When you are comparing the performance to the real-world aircraft, make sure you set the Pilot/Passenger/Baggage and Fuel weights to match what you typically have in the real aircraft. The Weight and Balance of this aircraft makes a big difference in its performance and handling.

I enjoy the Realism Mod and as a PPL (A) student I can now practice and practice. Thank you so much! Short question about the T/O trim. My real DR400 uses 4.0 ... your V 1.0.0 too. Does V 1.2.0 have T/O trim 4.0 too?

Thanks for this great real-world feedback on the actual aircraft T/O trim setting... Based on this input I have reset the default trim back to 4.0 units, and I have also re-tweaked the trim range and sensitivity. A new version will be uploaded shortly. Let me know how these new settings compare with the actual aircraft performance.

Great mod, as always! Thank you so much :)
BTW, what about a flight dynamics realism mod for the default Robin CAP 10, a very interesting aircraft?

Dear "MGouge425," first of all, I join the other members of the community in thanking you for your work on improving Flight Simulator flight models. And, in particular, for this aircraft, which, although it is very common in France, does not receive much attention in the world of simulation.

I just have a question about the description you provide for the aircraft and, incidentally, the parameters you have actually selected for this mod. Indeed, the DR400 "Cadet" is a very rare version of this aircraft, about which there is little information available (btw I wonder why Asobo chose it instead of the very common 120 "Dauphin" :).

Here's my point: you mention an engine of 118HP, but it seems to me that its power would rather be 108HP. Also, regarding the cruise speed, I'm having trouble finding the information right now, but I'm familiar with the 120HP version, which I regularly fly in real life, and its normal cruise speed is 180 km/h (100 knots). So, I would be a bit surprised if the Cadet (with less power) had a cruise speed of 215 km/hr (115 knots) as you indicate. What do you think?

Secondly, I was wondering if you had any intention of addressing the "weathervaning" issue that affects most default aircraft in MSFS, including the Robin. From my perspective, it's one of the most problematic issues in terms of realism during taxi, takeoff, and landing phases. (If you're interested, I have some information on this topic that I can share with you.)

Thank you once again for your fantastic contribution through your realism mod!

    Best,
    Frédéric

    Thanks for this feedback...
Because there are so many different variants of the DR400, it can quickly become quite confusing and difficult to find accurate specs for each one. The DR-400/100 variant uses the Lycoming O-235-L2A engine, which has a max power rating of 118 hp / 2800 RPM. But, the EASA Type Certificate for this aircraft says it is limited by noise regulations to 2600 RPM, which reduces the continuous power output to 112 hp. The engines.cfg file in MSFS requires the max hp and RPM to be specified to correctly simulate the engine power/torque output, so this is what has been used.
The cruise speed spec was also taken from the EASA Type Certificate, which specifies Va (maneuvering speed) at 215 km/hr. (116 knots). Unfortunately, I do not have access to the actual POH for this aircraft, which would provide the most accurate performance specs.

Thank you very much for your quick answer ! Indeed finding the POH for this version is difficult as very few of them were actually sold. I only found this one, in french of course :-) : https://www.aeroclub-montlucon.fr/manuelJF.php

For this one, the mentioned engine is a O-235-H2C that delivers 108HP at 2600 RPM. But I understand that the Asobo version uses another one (which may exist as well I suppose, since it's commonly found on the 120HP version which is pretty close).

The reported cruise speed is indeed about 214km/H for 2600RPM at 4000ft. For that matter I was confused since the typical DR400/120 has a more powerful engine but lower cruise speed (and the same Va, but that's another thing).

Let me know if I can provide some assistance reading any french POH or anything, I'd be very happy to help.

    Thanks again !

    Version History

Version 1.4.0 ⦁ The Max Takeoff Weight (MTOW) has been reduced to 865 kg (1907 lbs.) to match the actual aircraft POH specs. ⦁ The Empty Weight CG has been moved down slightly to more closely match the actual aircraft. This improves the pitch stability in response to power changes. ⦁ The Parasite Drag Scaler has been increased to more closely match the actual aircraft climb and cruise performance, based on real-world pilot input. ⦁ The Flaps Lift Scaler has been decreased slightly to more closely match the actual aircraft performance. ⦁ The previously enabled Aerotow Tow Plane capability has been changed back to disabled to match the actual DR400-100 capability. The 108 HP engine on this variant is too small to be used effectively for glider towing... The real-world Tow Plane variant of this aircraft has a 180 HP engine. ⦁ A PDF copy of the actual aircraft POH (in French) is now included under the Documentation folder.
