Fastnet Rock is a small island in the south of Ireland, composed of clay and slate with quartz veins. It is the southernmost point in the Republic of Ireland.  The island is located 6.8 km southwest of Clear Island in County Cork. The rock rises 30 metres above the sea. The rock is occupied by a lighthouse of the same name, the Fastnet.Its construction began in 1853 under the direction of Robert Mallet. Its first light was emitted on 1 January 1854. It replaced the old lighthouse on Clear Island.
