    Description

KMKC Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport

Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (IATA: MKC, ICAO: KMKC, FAA LID: MKC) is a city-owned, public-use airport serving Kansas City, Missouri, United States. Located in Clay County, this facility is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems, which categorized it as a general aviation reliever airport.

History - The city considered calling the airport "Peninsula Field" because of the sharp bend in the Missouri River around the airport.

The airport from Quality Hill. The Buck O'Neil Bridge is on the right. The Fairfax Assembly plant (the former Fairfax Airport) is the big building across the Missouri River on the left.

This airport replaced the old Richards Field, located near Raytown, Missouri, as Kansas City's main airport. It was dedicated as New Richards Field in 1927 by Charles Lindbergh and was soon renamed Kansas City Municipal Airport. Its prominent tenant was Trans World Airlines (TWA), which was headquartered in Kansas City. The airport was built in the Missouri River bottoms next to the rail tracks at the Hannibal Bridge. At the time, air travel was considered to be handled in conjunction with rail traffic.

The airport had limited area for expansion (Fairfax Airport across the Missouri River in Kansas City, Kansas, covered a larger area). Airplanes had to avoid the 200-foot (60 m) Quality Hill and the Downtown Kansas City skyline south of the south end of the main runway. In the early 1960s, an FAA memo called it "the most dangerous major airport in the country" and urged that no further federal funds be spent on it. A new airport was then constructed to serve Kansas City, being the Kansas City International Airport (MCI) which was opened in 1972 with all scheduled passenger airline flights being moved from MKC to MCI at that time.

This scenery includes handcrafted models of all buildings as seen on the latest available satellite imagery and includes 8 open hangars with animated doors that are open from 6am to midnight local time. The doors can be opened/closed by hiding/unhiding the flight yoke during hours that they are closed.

The new Buck O'Neil Bridge is included, but the city side is lacking. There is a payware version (missouri-river-bridges-kansas-to-ksus) by rkbridger. This mod does include the Buck O'Neil Bridge, but not known if updated to include the new bridges. The latest news, states that only one bridge is opened to handle north and south bound traffic.

Hello. Could you help me with missing texture? I don't have all world updates installed since I don't have enough space anymore. Otherwise excellent airport, as always. Thank you very much! I'm still on 2020.

This grass is from package Caribbean. Go to profile, content manager and search for Caribbean. World Update XVI: Caribbean should fix the missing texture. If this don't help, let me know and I will use a different texture.

Strangely installing WU Caribbean alone didn't fix the issue. However installing all default handcrafted airports did fix the issue. Now preparing my first flight from the airport :). Thank you very much! Love your airports with GA traffic mod.

That is strange. I opened the texture and it said from package Caribbean. In the future I will try to find texture from the fs-base package which should be available in any sim install. Glad you got it corrected.

Thank you for this scenery! I have been hoping someone would tackle MKC for a while, nice to fly into here now instead of MCI all the time.
