(KPRB) Paso Robles Municipal Airport, San Luis Obispo County, CA - Image 1

    Description

This is an upgrade to the default KPRB airport in MSFS. All modifications are done using Microsoft's SDK, custom objects, and library objects. This airport has a fairly large footprint and was in development for several months. Now version 1.2

Paso Robles Municipal, also called Archie Dean Memorial Field, is located in central California, halfway between SF and LA. This GA facility opened in the 1940s and began as a WW2 training center. There was airline service off and on over the years, but none since the late 1980s. Today this airport serves local tourism and the area's thriving wine industry, with a large amount of regular and visiting GA traffic.

    • Custom airport objects including terminal building, Loyd's FBO, north hangar complex, SW hangar complex, south hangar complex, Cal-Fire air attack base, various airfield signs, and Estrella Warbird Museum in the SE corner
    • Added eight notable buildings in the airport industrial park
    • Cal-Fire static aircraft generously donated by Flyin' J Simulations (Please check out their excellent KHMT scenery!)
    • Added fencing, weather station, windsocks, lighting, airport identifier, and various Cal-Fire equipment at the base
    • Extensive landscaping added to approximate the airport atmosphere. Added another 200 or so trees to match the local ortho
    • Remade the runways as the default MSFS lights and other features were not accurate
    • Remade the ramp lines and taxiways, as the default MSFS layout required updating. Replaced all taxiway signs due to incorrect taxiway names
    • Added 17 GA parking positions and a helicopter start point. There is also a start point AI aircraft should not use at the Cal-Fire base

    Notes

    1. Night lighting has been added to the terminal area, Cal-Fire base, and some other spots, but not the t-hangars (Ramp lighting was added where indicated in photos)

    2. Custom objects are designed to give a general impression and may have some imperfections. Low poly models were used for static aircraft at the Estrella museum to avoid resource hit

    3. The MSFS20 version has an issue with visibility of runway texture on runway 1/19 due to issues with the default apron materials. Compromise had to be made to find a material suitable in most types of daylight but the markings are still pretty faint. Runway 13/31 has no issues.

    4. Issues were found with KSEZ objects in MSFS24 testing, so I have provided a separate version with native MSFS24 GUIDs linked for KSEZ objects.

    5. Some MSFS dependencies were used, including many Gaya library objects. You will need KSEZ, KCGX, EDVK, and KFFA installed to see certain t-hangar, fence, light, and parking sign features. WU20 Japan POIs are also needed for the wall objects at the terminal.

    Installation

    1. Unzip the .ZIP file
    2. Place the indicated folder in your MSFS "community" folder in your MSFS installation location.

IMPORTANT The latest version of my California GA library is also required and listed in the dependencies. This contains some needed hangar objects and Cal-Fire ramp objects (6/23 update)

For some ramp objects and the VOR, you will also need to download the free UK2000 library here if you don't already have it:

    Happy flying!

SPECIAL THANKS to several people who provided local info, including on the ground museum photos, and those of you who helped test as well!

Thank you for a beautiful rendition of the Paso airport. I have driven the 101 past this airport dozens of times but never visited. Historic Camp Roberts is the huge army base just to the north. (now used for training only).

I believe the asos and awos in MSFS24 might be bugged if trying to listen on radio; dont worry. In regard to the pink texture, going to look for any conflicts. Thanks for the help.

great job! super cool airport. two quick questions, in fs24 i'm seeing pick textures with the fencing around the asos. i should have all the dependencies. wheres does that come from? can you also check the asos frequency? shows as blank for myself. thanks again!

I am not sure why you are seeing that, it is from this library, which should work fine in 24:

To be honest, I have never input frequencies, and always kind of assumed people usually use the default ones. Is that something highly desired?

I just made my first flight into PRB at night. I noticed that Rwy 1/19 has centerline lights instead of edge lights. It should have HIRL edge lights per the chart. Rwy 13/31 and all the PAPIs are correct otherwise.

Uh oh, that's a big no-no. I'll have to issue a fix, thanks for pointing that out!

Really good quality all around. There seem to be a few quirks in the MSFS 2024 version, perhaps? The custom apron texture near the terminal is clipping slightly, but this is really minor.

How long before you turn this into a payware business (and tackle KSTS & KSBD :) )

Wow that’s a nice find, thank you for sharing! As for STS etc, those are pretty big airports with proper airline terminals. Not sure my models are detailed enough to do justice to them, but maybe someday.

(KPRB) Paso Robles Municipal Airport, San Luis Obispo County, CA

Welcome to El Paso de Robles, the 'pass of the oaks', a beautiful part of central California and bona fide wine country. A large general aviation field with everything you need, this is a great stopover between the Bay Area and LA. Or, you can launch from here to regional destinations like KSBP or KSBA, after checking out the air museum.
