Multiplayer Model Matching (M3) Source Aircraft Update File - Image 1

    Description

    PLEASE NOTE:

    M3 WILL NOT WORK AS-IS FOR MSFS2024

The only workaround would be to disable the default aircraft as Target aircraft (since these are all 2020 standard aircraft) and create your own Target aircraft in your 2024 community folder and match to those.  This has been tested successfully for 2024!

Multiplayer model matching is supposed to be implemented at some point by Asobo/Microsoft, so we may just be keeping this as a legacy product for those still using MSFS2020.

Multiplayer Model Matching (M3) Source Aircraft Update File

This is a Source Aircraft Update File for the M3 utility found here: https://flightsim.to/file/59353/multiplayer-model-matching-m3.

This file will update the M3 database to include the latest SOURCE aircraft not found in v1.4.2 of M3.

    Steps to Update

Here are the steps to update:

    1) Extract the "M3_Source_Aircraft_Update D-MMM-YYYY.mmms" file from the zip file.

    2) Within M3, enable "Advanced Mode" by pressing the box in the upper right.

    3) Click on the "Import/Update Source Aircraft" button located on the bottom right.

    4) Click on "Load Source Aircraft File"

    5) Open the "M3_Source_Aircraft_Update D-MMM-YYYY.mmms" from whichever directory you saved it.

    6) Click on "Import/Update All Aircraft"

    7) Click "Yes" to update.  Click Ok.

    8) After the import, check the aircraft you've imported and mark as enabled or disabled for model matching (default is enabled)

    9) Generate the package

    10) Go to the directoy M3 is located and go to the "Output" folder.  This is where the new "zMMM_MultiplayerModelMatching" folder is located.

    11) Replace the "zMMM_MultiplayerModelMatching" folder in your Community folder with the new version.

    12) Launch MSFS

Note that aircraft that have a blank icao_type_designator are not included in M3 as matching will fail for these aircraft without it.  It's a good practice for all aircraft developers to make sure they include this attribute even for reasons other than model matching.

    What is M3

M3 is a freeware configuration utility app for MSFS that offers two major features:

     1)   First, it generates a single package of small aircraft configuration files which, when placed in the Community folder, redirects multiplayer aircraft models you DON’T have installed to similar ones you DO have installed. So, for example, you can make a Kitfox (if you don't have it installed) look like the DHC2 Beaver instead of the generic Bonanza (for example).

     2)   Second, it updates the MSFS ICAO Aircraft Designator database to include all necessary ICAO designators. This allows you to see an aircraft you own, or a closely matched aircraft, even if you don’t have the livery installed.

    Objective:

Eliminate or reduce the number of multiplayer generic aircraft you see while playing MSFS. Overall, M3 should provide a vastly improved multiplayer experience!

Is this still valid for MSFS2020 or has it been replaced with your new 'Aircraft Type Designator Mod'?

I will need to update this to match the "Aircraft Type Designator Mod" as the later includes new ICAOs. Thanks for the reminder. The "Aircraft Type Designator Mod" is a subset feature of M3, but does not replace it.

Okay, so they can be ran together?

Hi, i downloaded the latest "M3_Source_Aircraft_Update 3-Aug-2024.mmms" file. Within the zip files comes a "basic instrucionts.txt" file. unfortunately, its not very clear in the instructions. Please see my questions after the "-->"

    1) Within M3, enable "Advanced Mode" -CLEAR

    2) Click on the "Import Source Aircraft" button and point to this file
--> there is no such button, i suppose the button labeled "Import/Update Source Aircraft" is meant?

    3) After the import, check the aircraft you've imported and mark as enabled or disabled for model matching (default is enabled)
--> are there missing some steps after step 2 and before step 3? What do i exactly need to do, once i have clicked Import/Update Source Aircraft". I suppose to click in the new window on "load source aircraft file" (because thats the only available button), then select the new downloaded file "M3_Source_Aircraft_Update 3-Aug-2024.mmms" --> but once loaded, which button to click next?

Probably best just to use the instructions found in the original M3 download as it has more detail with screen shots. The text file was simplified. I'll be sure to include the PDF instead of the txt file in the next update.

I installed MMM yesterday. It doesn't seem to have any effect. I have only the generic planes in my hanger except for one Cowan helicopter and a FlyByWireA320neo. Checked the MMM installation table to be sure I have all the listed targets in my hanger. Then I selected all the lines in the source file and accepted the default targets, then generated the output files and finished the installation (with FS not running, as directed). MMM created 2295 files in 460 folders in the folder ....Community/zMMM..../SimObjects/Airplanes. And I have the 2.88Mb file PlaneTypeICAO.xml in folder C:\Users\Doug\FlightSim\MMM_V1_4_2\ICAO_Data\multiplayer-model-matching\PackageSources\SPBs\m3-airtraffic\AirTraffic

Went to a group fly-in today and I could see that some folks were obviously operating helicopters but what I saw was a small single engine plane hovering and moving like a helicopter where it should have looked like my Bell 407. It was a DC-3 fly-in and I saw no DC-3's other than my own. Just plenty of single engine light planes even when the nameplates said DC-3.

I set Live Players and Live Traffic. Is this correct?

    Any ideas or corrections appreciated!

There should be a file titled "PlaneTypeICO.spb" in the AirTraffic folder within the zMMM_MultiplayerModelMatching folder that's copied into the Community folder. Check there to make sure its there and that the file size is around 1005kb. The is the file that adds all of the new aircraft ICAOs. If not, rerun the package generation and replace the file that goes into the Community folder with the updated generated package.

Thanks, I do have PlaneTypeCAO.spb in Community/zMMM_MultiplayerModelMatching/AirTraffic. The spb file is 995KB and the time-date corresponds to when I did the install on Sep 19.

Good news, yesterday on a helicopter group flight I saw mostly helicopters, unlike the previous day where jumbo jets were hovering everywhere - still there was one or two big fixed wing planes, maybe ones that are not yet in the file. I think what made MMM work was when I emptied out the Community folder then did a clean reboot and restart of FS. Then I restored just the MMM to Community and ran FS. After that I restored all my other add-ons to Community, reboot and it seems to work now.

I am looking for an update to target aircraft. It's always been confusing to me the way the original devs define source and target but if I'm not mistaken source is the aircraft that is actually being flown in the sim that, without m3, would be showing up as something it's not. And of course target is the aircraft that after using m3, the aircraft will show as. My brain really wants it to be the other way around. Source should be supplying the proper model... it's a source... for a target aircraft to be displayed properly. So with all of this confusion, I can't help but think this update you have here is actually what I am looking for and maybe you named it wrong or I am just mixed up.

I am one of the developers of M3, along with Danny Malloy. You pose an interesting question regarding what is a source aircraft vs. what is a target aircraft, and its something that Danny and I discussed in some detail which should be which. We settled on the perspective of a source aircraft being what you see in the game but you don't have installed and a target aircraft being what you're targeting it to look like. What this upload provides is an update to the source aircraft, which are those aircraft recently released in the game (or those I might have not captured previously). Of course, anyone can add source aircraft on their own, but we do this as a service to keep M3 fresh and up-to-date. Besides it's base function, M3 is also a great resource to have on hand as it contains (most) all of the aircraft released for MSFS and can be used as a reference tool, if needed.

Hello. Thank you for the great tool.
I exported a folder with the latest 1.4.2.6 database, but the date of AirTraffic/PlaneTypeICAO.spb remains 10/30/2023.
Is the update of the ICAO designators database different from this spb file?
I want to display the aircraft model even if the livery is different.
The following xml file matched the latest 1.4.2.6 contents.
    ICAO_Data\multiplayer-model-matching\PackageSources\SPBs\m3-airtraffic\AirTrafficPlaneTypeICAO.xml

You should have a new spb file created and this should be found in your Output directory. When you generate the package, that xml file is used to create the spb and this is done by running the ASOBO package generation tool (which is why the sim starts briefly during this part of the process). This is also why MSFS cannot be running when you generate a package. Not to say this is your issue, but something to be considered. Try running M3 an admin or with the program folder located in an unprotected directory on your drive (such as your desktop). If these suggestions don't work, then we'll have to dig deeper at the issue. BTW - I could start including the updated spb file in the source aircraft update zip file if the problem persists.

Hi, thank you for your advice.
I ran M3 on my desktop and PlaneTypeICAO.spb with the latest date was output.
The cause is probably because I ran M3 under a folder name with full-width Japanese characters.
Output was successful when directly under (C) or in a folder with half-width English characters.
Anyway, it worked well, thank you very much.

Awsome work, thanks for the update!
Group Flights are alot more enjoyable with the variety of airplanes nowadays, thanks to you guys!

When I try to update it does not work. I get "unable to open database file" for all the new source aircraft and it does not add them to the source aircraft list.

You might need to import the source aircraft file from your desktop. Running M3 in admin mode might do the trick as well.

That's a big improvement. Finally more variation in the sky and especially helicopters instead of strangely hovering standard aeroplanes. Thank you very much.

Absolutely! We try to keep the source aircraft import file updated every 1-2 months or when ~20 new aircraft are identified to be added.
