Anaktuvuk Pass is a historic caribou migration route. The word “Anaktuvuk” translates to “the place of caribou droppings”!  The area is home to the inland Iñupiat, the Nunamiut, who rely on subsistence hunting of caribou.  The original nomadic Nunamiut left the Brooks Range and scattered in the early 1900s, mostly due to the collapse of the caribou population. By the 1940s, several Nunamiut families returned to the area and settled at Anaktuvuk Pass.

Anaktuvuk Pass Airport resides at elevation of 2,102 feet (641 m) It has one runway designated 2/20 with a gravel surface measuring 4,800 by 100 feet (1,463 x 30 m).
