Microsoft JN-4 Jenny Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default  Microsoft Curtiss JN-4 Jenny aircraft.  This mod is primarily aimed at improving the overall flight dynamics of this aircraft, providing a more realistic flying experience that is much closer to the actual aircraft.  Several changes have been made to the flight model and the aircraft weight and balance, which are all detailed in the Change Log file included under the Documentation folder.
This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-microsoft-aircraft-jn4 folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Curtiss JN-4 Jenny aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all existing aircraft Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

TIP OF THE DAY: The relatively large vertical wing struts on this aircraft are effectively additional aerodynamic flight surfaces, which add significantly to the total vertical stabilizer area and the resulting yaw stability of the aircraft.

TIP OF THE DAY: Since this aircraft does not have a steerable tail wheel or wheel brakes and only the Rudder is used to turn during taxi, which results in a relatively wide turn radius. When starting from Cold and Dark at the Ramp, always press [SHIFT]+[P] to manually push back from the parking spot before starting the engine. Follow the CHECKLIST steps, or just press [CTRL]+[E], to start the engine.

TIP OF THE DAY: To easily view and operate the new hand-held Radio/Compass, just press [F9] to toggle the CLOSE Pilot view. Press [F9] again to restore the original PILOT view. Press [F11] to toggle the LANDING view for better runway visibility during taxi. Press [SPACE] to raise the cockpit view even further if needed.

To remove the engine cowling so that you can inspect the highly detailed fully animated 3-D engine model, just click on the small Left cockpit corner bracket. Clicking on the Right corner bracket will remove the new hand-held Radio/Compass.

TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft was introduced in 1917, about 10 years before the trimmable horizontal stabilizer was first developed by Taylor Aircraft, and it had no Elevator Trim control. The Engine/Prop was instead mounted with a significant 6° DOWN THRUST angle that eliminates the need for elevator trim. When the power is increased, the nose is automatically prevented from rising by the increased down thrust, and when the power is decreased, the nose is also prevented from falling by the reduced down thrust. This allows the aircraft to maintain a very stable constant pitch attitude regardless of the power setting, so no change in trim is required. This large down thrust angle, and the very low engine RPM, also eliminates most of the P-Factor yaw and dangerous fishtailing typically inherent in most tail dragger aircraft during takeoff, making it extremely easy to both take off and land. This highly stable slow-moving aircraft is easily one of the easiest aircraft to fly ever created and it was truly well ahead of its time. With its dual controls it quickly became the standard aircraft for training new pilots, and the exceptional visibility from the open cockpit also made it excellent for reconnaissance, which is why over 6,000 were produced for military use during World War I.

Just a little input on your flying tips, I'm not saying it's wrong to do s turns to slow down after landing, but it was common to do several laps around the landing strips to slow down before landing and digging the tail hook into the ground. MSFS doesn't have a blip switch, but you would use this to cut off the engine, when you let it go the engine would start back up again, this way you could control the speed. When landing you often stopped the engine before landing.

When flying old planes like this both in X-plane and in MSFS I always do these extra laps and cut the engine before landing and I have never had the need for doing the mentioned ground turns, which could be dangerous if you flew a plane with a rotary engine ( which this plane does not have for ref. )

I can only modify the MSFS default aircraft... Unfortunately, that is a payware add-on aircraft that I don't have.

Thank you for this. I love flying the old planes and the more real the better.

    Works perfectly.

    Thanks for that.

Tip of the Day: This aircraft has a significant amount of adverse yaw when the ailerons are deflected, and a significant amount of rudder must be applied to perform a coordinated turn.

Tip of the Day: To remove the engine cowling and see the amazingly well modelled engine, just click on the small metal angle bracket on the left side of the cockpit.

I'd like to see the main landing gear axle being one piece of steal tubing which goes ALL the way through the main gear assembly to each wheel hubcap. In addition, I believe the actual wheel axle TRAVEL up and down is much less than currently rendered. Also nice to see rendered would be the small aileron cable guide fitting mounted on the right side of the center section. The MSFS Curtiss JN-4D Jenny would then be just about a perfect rendering! Can these upgrades be incorporated into a future update for the Jenny?

    Thanks, Gary

Unfortunately, I don't have the tools or skills required to modify the 3-D model.

    Version History

Version 2.2.0 ⦁ The Engine and Prop parameters have been tweaked to more closely match the actual aircraft specs for Engine HP, Prop Diameter, Min/Max RPM, Oil Pressure and Coolant Temperature. ⦁ The Tail Skid ground friction has been increased to more closely match the actual aircraft and improve taxi speed control and landing roll out distance. It now requires about 700 RPM to begin moving the aircraft on a paved runway, and about 800 RPM on grass or dirt.
