Description
Welcome to the Chicken Strip - my third reworked Death Valley airport!
From wiki:-
Saline Valley Warm Springs Airfield, commonly known as the Chicken Strip, is a non-towered dirt airstrip not depicted on an FAA sectional chart. The airstrip provides general aviation fly-in access to the Saline Valley hot springs in Death Valley National Park. The closest airport to the airstrip is Lone Pine Airport, 20 miles (17 nmi; 32 km) to the southwest, and the closest airport with regular airline service is Fresno Yosemite International Airport, 107 miles (93 nmi; 172 km) to the west.
Chicken Strip was built in the 1960s to provide quicker access to the nearby hot springs, sometimes called the warm springs, that are a short walking distance away. Without the airport the only other access to the Saline Valley hot springs is an arduous, 40 miles (64 km) dirt road that can take three to four hours to complete.
On August 19, 2019, the NPS issued an official authorization and is maintained by volunteers.
My third reworking of a Death valley airport to compliment my Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek airports. Indeed as the Chicken Strip can be a challenge to navigate to and spot I recommend flying to it rather than starting at the strip.
This youtube vid is worth checking out:-
What I have done:-
- Removed asphalt runway.
- Added and aligned new gravel strip and apron to match sat imagery
- Runway now has a more realistic up hill slope
- Removed aiport workers and fuel depot
- Added custom models
- Added 4 small GA parking spots.
- tonne of hand placed rocks and shrubs
- other minor tweaks.
Just need this excellent library if you want the windsock to show, thank you to the dev!
Download the zip file, unpack and place in the community file as normal.
Have fun with this mod and please let me know if there are any problems or suggestions for improvement.
Lone pine is next on the list!
All the best
K.

Just a heads up, this one crashes in the latest SU5 beta build of the sim, everytime you try to take off from here it crashes, loads in just fine but as soon as you start roling down the runway crash to desktop. landing there no issue, its just when you load in there and want to take off it crashes, very strange and no idea why it happens.

Thanks Mate. I've seen on the forums others developers having the same problem. I'll look into and see what the issue is. I didn't rename the modelib file with this one so perhaps thats the problem.
Thanks for letting me know. I havn't flown from my own scenery since I started Lone Pine a month ago! Lol.
Cheers
Karl.

These are awesome! Thank you! I am so excited to see Lone Pine coming next. I love the Owens Valley.
There's also Trona to the south and a strip near Goldstone Lake, although those may be too far out from Death Valley for you.

Sorry for the late reply, been working on Lone Pine which I will publish today. Thank you for your comments!

Very nice work. I did this one for X-Plane and am very happy to see it arrive on MSFS. I hope you will do Panamint Springs and the defunct but fun Tunnel Meadows. Thanks for this.

How funny, I enjoyed the strip on x-plane (still do, many thanks!). I'm just finishing Lone Pine but will take a look at Panamint...perhaps I'll include the very expensive Gas Station! Glad you like my work. Cheers,

Loving these Death Valley airports!
After seeing that... fun... approach into Darwin in the Chicken Strip video you posted in the description, I decided to add Darwin to the sim, since it wasn't included in the default airports. Thanks for the inspiration! Now you can recreate the flight in the YouTube video. :)

Thanks buddy! Im super pleased I’ve encouraged others to build scenery for the community. Death Valley is such a beautiful place to fly around and explore in the sim. Perhaps between us we can upgrade all the runways in area! Thanks for feedback and all the best! K.

Let me know which was ones you might like. I’ve started Lone pine and have it mind to look at Beatty afterwards. It was another member who suggested lone pine so I’m pretty happy to take requests. All the best.

Hey eneh075, just wondering if you're still planning to do Dunkeswell in the UK? As a Devonian, I'm eagerly awaiting that one :-)

I was once saw an UFO flying around this area. Wondering if it came from Area 51. An unbelievable craft with incredible speed and 90 degree sharp turn as of gravity doesn’t exist.

You probably witnessed my terrible flying! I’m amazed you can spot anything in those beautiful dark skies! Thanks.

There were 12 of us. Anyway, it was incredible sight. And it was not any shape or form of any aircraft we seen.

Wow, very lucky to witness. I didn’t see anything odd when I was there, not even any jets over father Crowley point! Could be a fun mod opportunity?
