The Columbretes Islands are a Spanish archipelago of small islands of volcanic origin, located in the Mediterranean Sea, 49 kilometers off the coast of Oropesa del Mar. They administratively belong to the municipality of Castellón de la Plana, in the Valencian Community.

For their protection, the Columbretes Islands Nature Reserve was declared in 1988, and in 1995, their surroundings were added to the Columbretes Islands Marine Reserve. Several teams of rangers and scientists are permanently stationed there, but they are uninhabited. 

These islands were known to the Greeks and Romans since ancient times. Writers such as Strabo and Pliny the Elder cited the astonishing number of snakes that inhabited them. The names Ophiusa and Colubraria (meaning "serpent" in Greek and Latin, respectively) refer to this fact. The islands owe their current name to "Coluber," the Latin word for "serpent."
