Updated to 0.0.6 to fix for 2024 SU4 (towplane flight pattern)
The stock towplanes in MSFS2024 never survive each update that MS/Asobo does, i.e. the current 'stock' towplanes are essentially non-usable. This mod gives you a free workable towplane in MSFS2024. it's not perfect, but unlike the stock towplanes it will get you in the air.
This mod configures the **stock** Robin DR400 to perform as a tow plane - when you install the mod you'll see the Robin as new option when you select glider ... configure ... launch-method.

This is a mod to the stock Robin DR400 aircraft in MSFS 2024 to have that as a good towplane for gliders.
This Robin has been tested to aerotow the fully ballasted JS3-18 glider off a 1600-foot runway in nil wind. Generally you expect some headwind for a typical launch which should improve on this.
The stock towplanes availabe in MSFS 2024 struggle to launch gliders at all, and need a much longer run to get airborne.
If you're a MSFS gliding noob, select a glider in MSFS2024, click the 'configure' button and choose this towplane from the "launch method" options, spawn into the sim, and waggle the rudder to get the tow started.

There's very very little control over the MSFS 'AI towplane' behaviour so I have to nudge it in the right direction by modding apparently random parameters in the plane itself. The objective for the Robin is to have a towplane that can pull a glider into the air on shorter runways and crosswinds than the fairly gutless 'stock' towplane can manage and that involves compromises particularly in that increasing the engine power shortens the ground run but ALSO increases the climb rate.
Setting the Robin 'cruise' flap to actually have a positive value was a key 'hack' to manage the liftoff/climb performance - the AI is still messing with the plane, i.e. it's the flap change which causes the stock towplane to dip when it's a few hundred feet up, but in this modded version the +ve flaps keep a lid on the airspeed even though the engine is powerful enough for a short ground run.
Given the Sim Soaring Club with 3000+ members is easily the largest gliding community in MSFS (maybe larger than any other VFR multiplayer group) you'd think MS/Asobo would actually ask us about changes they think would be good for soaring in MSFS, but they never do.

* This mod is simply to compensate for issues the stock glider towplanes have had since the launch of MSFS2024, where typically the towplane is too weak to pull any glider off the ground.
*The mod essentially sets the required parameters so the stock Robin DR400 is recognised as a permitted towplane, and swaps out the flight_model.cfg and engines.cfg to get settings given a reasonably short ground run AND a reasonably OK climb rate. This is harder to do that it sounds.
* Install this mod in your Community folder, like any other mod.
* MSFSLayoutGenerator.exe is just the freeware tool used to build the package, you can ignore or delete it.
* This mod is just for an AI towplane. No multiplayer tow

The standard 2024 in game tugs are rubbish by comparison, with the combination stuck on the ground due to poor acceleration.
