TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft can use a winch cable length of up to 5,500 ft. So, to get the maximum altitude from a winch launch you should takeoff from a runway that is at least 5500 ft. long.

TIP OF THE DAY: If you get lost after a thrilling day of soaring in the mountains and need to plot a direct GPS course back to the airport, or you just need to find the nearest airport for an emergency landing, turn the upper right-hand knob (Mode) on the GPS until you see a list of all of all airports within a 100 km radius of your present position. Then, turn the lower right-hand knob (Page) to scroll through and highlight the desired airport, and then press the soft key at the bottom labeled "GOTO". A magenta Course line will then appear on the GPS, along with the current Bearing and Distance to the airport. You can update the Course line from your present position at any time by simply returning to airport list page and pressing "GOTO" again.

TIP OF THE DAY: For some spectacular mountain ridge soaring, I highly recommend a winch launch from Telluride (KTEX). After release, you can then either make a left downwind turn over the steep drop off beside the runway where you will find a good updraft, or you can turn right and begin climbing in the updrafts on the sides of the towering mountain peaks. You can easily climb to over 15,000 ft. here in a very short period of time.

TIP OF THE DAY: You can easily see your current AGL altitude at any time by simply turning the upper-right GPS knob (Mode) to display the Information page, which will then show your current MSL altitude, and your AGL height above your starting airport elevation in both meters and ft.

TIP OF THE DAY: Contrary to what you might think, the more a glider weighs the faster and farther it can go for any given altitude loss! This is clearly shown in the Polar performance charts in the POH. So, before starting a cross-country trip fill the water ballast tanks to MTOW.
This glider can easily cruise at 150 km/h or more with a sink rate below 1 m/sec., which makes it an excellent choice for cross-country soaring.

Can something be done for the canopy of the DG1001?
It used to be openable but now it is not. There is no click spot on the open canopy lever now as it used to be. This mod does not affect this, with it On or Off canopy is now shut like the LS8 one that was unopenable since the beginning .

TIP OF THE DAY: If you are performing an Aerotow takeoff, and the tow plane repeatedly speeds up and slows down after beginning the takeoff roll, it is because there is slack in the tow rope. This will happen if the glider starts rolling faster than the tow plane, which can be caused by a tail wind, or a slight downward runway slope. This is much less likely to happen on a grass or dirt runway. Try taking off again in the opposite direction.

TIP OF THE DAY: While some gliders like the DG LS8-18 require water ballast to offset pilot weight and maintain the CG within limits, this aircraft does not. It uses Fin Ballast Weights for that purpose instead, so to maximize takeoff and climb performance, especially at high-altitude airports, you should empty the water ballast tanks. Water ballast should only be used to maximize cruise speed and glide distance for cross country soaring trips.

TIP OF THE DAY: The POH Max Demonstrated Crosswind spec for this aircraft is only 8 kts. A crosswind Aerotow Lauch can be an extremely difficult and dangerous maneuver to perform in a glider, but you can use this procedure to successfully perform a crosswind takeoff...

1) Before starting the takeoff roll, apply and hold full UP elevator, and about 1/2 UPWIND ailerons. As your speed increases during the takeoff roll, reduce the upwind ailerons to keep the wings level.
2) Immediately after liftoff, return the elevator to neutral and fly just above the runway until the tow plane also lifts off.
3) During the takeoff roll, leave the rudder at neutral and hold UP elevator to keep the tailwheel firmly on the ground to maintain the runway centerline until liftoff. After liftoff, DO NOT apply rudder to maintain the runway centerline heading since this would result in a sideslip, which gliders don't like to do. Instead, just leave the rudder at neutral and allow the aircraft to naturally assume the correct crabbed attitude to maintain a course down the runway centerline behind the tow plane, which should also have a similar crabbed attitude at this point.
4) After you are clear of the runway, slowly drift sideways until you are directly behind the tow plane as in a normal Aerotow launch. The tow plane will then be responsible for maintaining the correct crabbed heading for both aircraft to counter the crosswind for the remainder of the takeoff.
5) This maneuver will take a lot of practice to do well... You won't get it right the first time!

TIP OF THE DAY: Since this aircraft does not have a steerable tailwheel, how do you steer to maintain the runway centerline or exit to the side of the runway after landing?

1) After touchdown, immediately retract the spoilers to keep your speed above 50 - 60 Km/h during the landing roll.
2) Release the back pressure on the stick to allow the tailwheel to rise up off of the runway. Apply down elevator if needed to keep the tailwheel off of the runway as your speed slowly drops.
3) Steer with the rudder and keep the wings level by applying opposite ailerons.

TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft is fundamentally a tail dragger, and like all other tail draggers you should keep the tailwheel firmly on the ground during the takeoff roll to prevent yawing and possible loss of directional control. During an Aerotow launch, apply and hold enough back pressure on the stick during the takeoff roll to keep the tail firmly on the ground until liftoff. Then return the stick to neutral and maintain level flight just above the runway until the tow plane also lifts off.

Here are the key things to know...
1) It will not start on the ground... you must be in the air to use it.
2) Turn on the FCU first, then raise the engine power switch cover and flip the power switch on.
3) You can set the throttle with either the knob on the FCU, or with your joystick throttle lever.

TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft does not have toe brakes. The wheel brakes are connected to the spoiler/airbrake handle and are applied when the spoilers are extended. Avoid touching down with the spoilers fully extended, because the brakes will also be fully applied, which could easily cause a tip over or ground loop.

TIP OF THE DAY: Unfortunately, there is currently a bug in the magnetic compass on this aircraft. Not only is it hard to see when the sun isn't shining directly on it, it's also reversed! So, you must add or subtract 180 degrees to the value shown to get the correct direction. Because of this, I recommend just enabling the COCKPIT HUD option under the USER EXPERIENCE menu of the ASSISTANCE OPTIONS screen. This will then show your current heading, airspeed (in knots), trim setting (%), V/S (in ft. per min.) and altitude (in feet).
