Asobo Flight Design CT Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default  Asobo Flight Design CTSL aircraft.  This mod is primarily aimed at improving the overall flight dynamics of this aircraft, providing a more realistic flying experience that is much closer to the actual aircraft.  Several changes have been made to the flight model and the aircraft weight and balance, which are all detailed in the Change Log file included under the Documentation folder, along with a PDF copy of the actual aircraft POH.

The default 3-D Model Geometry and Flight Model used for this aircraft are actually for the CTSW (Short Wing) variant, with a 2-blade prop, not the CTSL model described in the MSFS aircraft specifications.  So, this mod is also based on the actual aircraft specs for the CTSW model.

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-flightdesignct folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Flight Design CTSL aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all existing aircraft Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

I'm only discovering this mod now... And it completely changes the way you fly this aircraft!
The + : smoother ground roll, improved engine management, in-flight performances, much more stable cruising (tested in real-world weather) no need to constantly trim!
The flaps are more efficient, and as you extend them, you can feel that it's “dragging” more!
The - : well, now I feel like I'm flying a small light general aviation aircraft rather than an ultra light motorized one!
On takeoff, the vario is much more timid, whereas the default CTSL climbs like a rocket (goodbye max slope!)! On final, on the Asobo one the glide ratio is much greater, whereas with the mod you almost have to adopt a "flyingclub" slope (I don't know how to explain it), and depending on the approach/terrain you land on, you have to keep a "trickle" of throttle until touchdown, at the risk of touching down hard or even stalling, whereas on the default aircraft you can go full throttle back already from the runway threshold or even before!
I'm in the middle of a VFR tour on ivao, and I'm hesitant to switch back to Asobo's default model!
It has its qualities of very short take-offs (max slope/vario), but also its drawbacks (less stable, maintaining a precise altitude is less easy, especially in windy conditions)
I still think this mod will be a favorite of mine. I'll quickly get used to these new features!
I'm not a pilot in real life, so I can't judge it properly...
Oh I was about to forget, thank you for the work! 👍 😄

First of all, thanks for the mod.

I have installed the mod but the behavior of the ctsw proposed here does not match reality and it is actually further away from the behavior of a real ctsw than the the ctls included in msfs2020 .

I fly the CTSW in real life and to me this version feels highly de-powered. I have made some tests and with no wind and I am able to rotate much further down the runway than I do in real life. Furthermore I often hear the stall warning even though in real life I do not have any indication of stalls in the same situations.

I fly the 912ULS version of the CTSW and its climb rates are much higher as well.

I certainly admire the effort, and I wonder if this is an issue that only I am encountering. Is there something that I needed to do before installing this mod? any dependency to fulfil maybe?

Thanks for the great real-world feedback... I'll take a look another look at the performance specs for this aircraft. Also, if you normally fly solo, be sure to remove the Copilot weight in the W&B screen, which will improve the performance. You can also edit the flight_model.cfg file to permanently remove the Copilot weight. Adding some extra fuel to the Right tank when you are flying solo will also keep the CG centered.

thanks very much for your feedback.

To be fair I have a 3-bladed neuform propeller, which may make a difference.

Let me know if there is a way for me to record some real-world data with some software on the phone or even with a camera in the cockpit so we can derive the real numbers for this plane.

The POH is not great, I have the sensation that all ultralight aircrafts have manuals that are lacking lots of information. I will keep you posted.

    thanks for your kind answer

First of all, thank you for your feedback. Mr. MGouge425 modified the dynamics of almost all simulator aircraft from Cessna to Boeings. I don't think he can really judge how they all fly. But the remark of the real pilot of this aircraft is very valuable. I guess I won't install this mod. And thanks to the author for the published POH.

This was sorely needed. Finally the CTSW is here! Thanks.

Tip of the Day: The POH recommended flap setting for cruise is -12 degrees. This minimizes drag and maximizes speed and fuel efficiency.

Tip of the Day: The POH recommended final approach speed with full flaps (35 deg) is 100 kph (54 knots).

Tip of the Day: This aircraft has no toe brakes and uses a manually operated hand brake instead, so for realism the [NUM DEL] key should be used for braking, instead of external rudder pedal toe brakes. Tap on the key repeatedly to apply partial brakes, or hold it down to apply full brakes. You can also assign a controller lever to the BRAKES AXIS for max realism.

Using external toe brakes can also cause the right brake to partially lock up, unless you release the left brake pedal before the right one. This is apparently a bug in the 3-D model.

I have exactly the same issue about toe brakes with the aircraft I designed, so I think it is a bug in the MSFS SDK more than in the 3-D model
