    Microsoft G-21 Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default Microsoft Grumman G-21A Goose aircraft and is primarily aimed at improving the flight model to make its overall performance more closely match the actual aircraft, providing a much closer experience to flying the real aircraft.  A number of changes have been made to the aircraft flight model and engine parameters, and the weight and balance, which are all detailed in the included Change Log file.

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-microsoft-aircraft-g-21 folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Grumman G-21A Goose aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all of the available Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

    hardly improves anything !

This one could benefit from the water taxi improvements you were able to do to the C172.

Should it work in fs24 with default grumman g21 a? I installed it and it shows no plane in planes selection

No... It is only for MSFS 2020.

Five stars for your great work!

So, the one thing that kept me from this aircraft was it's speed. With this mod that problem is solved and this already beautiful aircraft becomes a joy to fly. Suggested this mod to a few fellow simmers and they all agree that this is a great addon.

I have a question that goes for all your modifications of the older MS aircraft: with your mods installed, should modern or legacy flight model be used ?

All of my mods are based on the default MODERN flight model setting in MSFS.

    Ok, thank you :)

Vast improvement on the default which is a fantastic visual model, but otherwise lacking.

One are that users have noted is lacking in the default model is the poor sound quality inside the cockpit particularly. Given the DHC-2 Beaver uses the same engine, would it be feasible to alias/piggyback off the Beaver sound pack to improve the cockpit sound quality?

Thanks for the great review... Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to modify the sounds.

Any chance of adding a faux water rudder to make the water handling more realistic?

This aircraft did not have a water rudder, because it has two engines. Realistic slow speed water steering is achieved by applying differential power. Leave one engine at idle, and slowly advance the other one to turn sharply at slow speeds. But, if you don't have a controller with two throttle levers, or you want to simulate having a water rudder, you can just lower the gear. When the gear is down, the tail wheel will act like a water rudder for slow speed steering.

Tip of the Day: The POH recommends a final approach speed of 90 mph with the flaps at 30 or 60 degrees. It also says the top of the forward fuselage will be level when you are in the correct pitch attitude for a 3-point landing.

Tip of the Day: For a historically authentic scenic flight in this aircraft, I highly recommend a short trip from Los Angeles (KLAX) to Catalina Island (KAVX), with a water landing stop over at Avalon Bay to see the famous Avalon Casino. Catalina Airlines flew the Grumman G-21 Goose between Long Beach, California and Avalon from 1940 to 1969.

KAVX is known as "The Airport in the Sky" since it is perched on top of a mountain peak, and it can be a challenging airport to land at due to the short, sloped runway. Always land going uphill on a sloped runway!

    Hello!

I love what you are doing with the Goose. I was a huge fan of the FSX verision and flew the OZX Redux version around the world twice (literally around the world in real time).

Sadly I still just cannot use the current version for one reason, and that is NAV radios. I get the use of the VFR map but it is so unrealistic, even for a bird of this age to have zero radio nav equipment that I can't do it.

Is there anyway this could be modded to have a NAV radio?

Unfortunately, adding a radio stack would require modifying the 3-D model, which is currently encrypted. If Microsoft removes the encryption and allows mods to the 3-D model, I'm sure someone with those skills would take on the task.

Tip of the Day: To quickly toggle the CARB HEAT without using the mouse or control levers, just press [H].

Tip of the Day: To perform a smooth land takeoff with minimum fishtailing, set the trim to 1.5 degrees UP, and hold about 1/2 UP Elevator along with about 1/4 - 1/2 RIGHT Ailerons before advancing the throttle to full power. As your speed increases, slowly reduce the Right Ailerons to keep the wings level, but continue to hold 1/2 UP Elevator to keep the tail from rising until liftoff. Also, hold a small amount of RIGHT Rudder to counter the P-Factor yaw produced by the nose up pitch angle. With a little practice you should be able to smoothly transition from the ground to the air with no change in either Pitch, Yaw or Roll... You will then earn your "Qualified Goose Pilot" rating!

This takeoff procedure will also reduce the required takeoff roll, and should be used along with 30 degrees of flaps for a short field takeoff.
