    Asobo LS8-18 Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

    This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default  Asobo LS8-18 glider aircraft.  This mod is primarily aimed at improving the overall flight dynamics of this aircraft, providing a more realistic flying experience that is much closer to the actual aircraft.  Several changes have been made to the flight model which are all detailed in the Change Log file included under the Documentation folder, along with a PDF copy of the actual aircraft POH.

    This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-ls8 folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default DG LS8-18 aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all existing aircraft Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

    A new tow plane option is now available for launching this aircraft. The ASOBO SAVAGE CUB has been configured and enabled as a much more realistic Aerotow aircraft option, and will now appear in the LAUNCH METHOD menu for this glider. To use it you must first download and install the latest version of the Asobo Savage Cub Realism Mod:

    I also highly recommend downloading this excellent set of Soaring Weather presets from the Sim Soaring Club...  Using these weather presets will make flying this aircraft much more realistic and enjoyable.

    The yaw string is all over the place. It never centers, it always instantly wobbles from far left to far right, and never picks a side. I think it is bugged.

    Unfortunately, I cannot change the yaw string behavior. This bug must be fixed by Asobo.

    I have not tested it, because I do not yet have MSFS 2024... Try it and let me know if it's compatible.

    Make sure you are installing the correct subfolder as described above. This could also be a conflict with another mod, or it could be a compatibility problem if you are using SU15 Beta, which will be fixed after the final release of SU15.

    TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft is configured to use a winch cable length of up to 3,500 ft. So, to get the maximum AGL altitude from a winch launch you should takeoff from a runway that is at least 3500 ft. long.

    TIP OF THE DAY: To continuously show the current distance and bearing back to your home airport on the GPS throughout your flight, before takeoff turn the upper-right GPS knob (Mode) to display the Nearest Airport list and then press the "GOTO" soft key at the bottom right. When you are ready to return to the airport, press GOTO again to display a magenta Course line from your present position back to the airport on the GPS map.

    TIP OF THE DAY: You can easily see your current AGL altitude at any time by simply turning the upper-right GPS knob (Mode) to display the Information page, which will then show your current MSL altitude, and your AGL height above your starting airport elevation in both meters and ft.

    TIP OF THE DAY: Contrary to what you might think, the more a glider weighs the faster and farther it can go for any given altitude loss! This is clearly shown in the Polar performance charts in the POH.
    So, before starting a cross-country trip fill the water ballast tanks to MTOW.

    TIP OF THE DAY: The corrections to the weight and balance and wing location in the last update have significantly improved the realism and performance of a winch launch. With a little practice, you can now easily achieve a launch altitude of up to 1500 ft. AGL.

    Immediately after liftoff, begin smoothly applying UP elevator to keep the airspeed at about 110 - 120 km/h during the launch. Continuously increase the stick back pressure to keep the airspeed in this range as the aircraft approaches max altitude and the winch cable is released.

    TIP OF THE DAY: If you are performing an Aerotow takeoff, and the tow plane repeatedly speeds up and slows down after beginning the takeoff roll, it is because there is slack in the tow rope. This will happen if the glider starts rolling faster than the tow plane, which can be caused by either a slight tail wind, or a slightly downward sloping runway. Try taking off again in the opposite direction. It is also much less likely to happen on a grass or dirt runway.

    Hello.
    I have a question for you about modifying the contact points of a glider in order to make it slide easier on the ground as it doesn't have wheels just skid and probably is simulated somehow with way too much friction.

    TIP OF THE DAY: Since this aircraft does not have a steerable tailwheel, how do you steer to maintain the runway centerline after landing, or exit to the side of the runway?

    1) After touchdown, immediately retract the spoilers to keep your speed above 50 - 60 Km/h during the landing roll.
    2) Release the back pressure on the stick to allow the tailwheel to rise up off of the runway. Apply down elevator if needed to keep the tailwheel off of the runway as your speed slowly drops.
    3) Steer with the rudder and keep the wings level by applying opposite ailerons.

    Version 1.8.0 This release is primarily aimed at providing more realistic Weight and Balance, which significantly affects the overall aircraft performance and handling. The W&B has been completely recalculated in accordance with the POH guidelines and limits. The following changes are included in this release... ⦁ The Flight Model Wing Position and Center of Lift has been moved significantly further aft to more closely match the actual aircraft and 3-D model. This improves the overall performance and allows it to more closely match the POH Polar charts for speed, sink rate and glide ratio. It also improves both the Winch Launch and Aerotow Launch takeoff performance. ⦁ The Wing Vertical Position has been moved down slightly to the original default position. ⦁ The Empty Weight CG has been moved significantly further aft to more closely match the actual aircraft POH Weight and Balance, and the new wing position. ⦁ The Water Ballast Tank positions have all been updated to match the new wing position. ⦁ The Max Winch Launch Speed has been reduced to more closely match the POH limit of 140 km/h.
