Asobo Diamond DA40 NG Realism Mod - Image 1

    Description

This is a modification for the MSFS 2020 default Asobo Diamond DA40 NG aircraft and is primarily aimed at improving the aircraft flight model to make its overall performance more closely match the actual aircraft, providing a much closer experience to flying the real aircraft.  Multiple changes have been made to the flight model parameters, and the aircraft weight and balance, which are detailed in the included Change Log file found under the Documentation folder, along with a PDF copy of the actual Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-da40ng  folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default Diamond DA40NG aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will also continue to utilize all of the existing available Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

The Diamond DA40NG is a next generation single engine 4 passenger General Aviation light aircraft that offers some unique capabilities and very impressive performance when compared with other similar GA aircraft.  The high performance low drag aerodynamic design of the fuselage and wings, coupled with a unique 168 HP diesel engine that runs on much cleaner and less expensive Jet A fuel instead of 100LL Avgas, allows it to perform extremely well, and much more economically, when compared with other similar size aircraft.  Because it runs on Jet A fuel, the engine does not require either spark plugs or magnetos, which simplifies its operation and improves reliability,  and the other normally complex engine management tasks are controlled by a modern ECU, which completely eliminates the need for the Mixture and Prop controls.  All the pilot has to do is select the desired % power with the Throttle and the ECU takes care of the rest.

    STEERING:

This mod uses Free Castering Steering by default to match the real aircraft.  To improve the realism and performance of your Toe Brake Pedals, I highly recommend changing the SENSITIVITY settings on the CONTROLS OPTIONS screen to the following...
    ⦁    Set "SENSITIVITY -" to 33%,
    ⦁    Set "SENSITIVITY +" to -33%,
⦁    Set "DEAD ZONE" to 0%,
    ⦁    Set "NEUTRAL" to 60%,
⦁    Set "EXTREMITY DEAD ZONE" to -1%.
This will make the performance of the brakes much closer to the real-world, where the braking force is applied very gradually at first and then increases as the pedal is pressed further down. This will improve the smoothness and realism of braking for all aircraft in MSFS, and it will also make differential brake steering much easier and more precise.

Great airplane although I believe the fuel transfer switch moved to the emergency fuel selector. Airplane works very well especially with the Working Title G1000.

    So good mod!
Could you remake it for MSFS 2024, please! It :)
In MSFS 2024, this airplane also suffers from incorrect RPM calculations. :(

Most COMMUNITY mods are supposed to be backward compatible in MSFS 2024, so go ahead and try it to see if it works...

Yes, I tried that, but it didn't work. :(
At least RPM's behavior hasn't changed.

Unfortunately, I can also confirm that while the plane is available (as a variant called 'default' next to the private charter NG and XLT and the default NG and XLT), it at least still has the RPM issue that this mod succesfully fixed in 2020. Will play around a bit more to see if some of the other improvements are picked up or not.

Something went wrong I followed your instructions, as my FS is steam version I put the Asobo_Da40NG_Realism_Mod_1.4.1 Folder in C:\Users\[myusername]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Community Folder, but I'm still having the default Da40 when I choose it, What can I be doing wrong?

You put the wrong folder in COMMUNITY... unzip the download file and drill down to the "mge-asobo-aircraft-da40ng" folder, then copy it into the COMMUNITY folder...

Got it, my bad, Now it's working, everything is nice.
I usually steer my aircraft with the same input as the rudder, And I just cant steer, any advice?, Or Should I use differential brakes on it?

Thanks for your meticulous measurement and passion in updating all these aircrafts for the community. Some of them should have been done by Asobo long time ago e.g. max RPM. But they just do not care. Now, with your mod, DA40 is much more "flyable"

I think you nailed it with v1.4.1. I need to do another flight in the real one next week to be sure. The engines, flight model, controls, etc. feel pretty close to the real bird now.

I had my son try it out and he made a good point. When using differential breaking for the castering steering, the plane comes to a complete stop in the turns as if the breaks are too strong on each wheel. Is there something that can be done about that or is that the Asobo issue you mentioned earlier?

To improve differential brake steering, I recommend changing your Toe Brake SETTINGS in MSFS as described above... This will smooth out the braking force and allow you to apply smaller changes in brake pressure. Also, see the TIP OF THE DAY below for the best technique to use for differential brake steering.

Thanks, much appreciated for getting this bird the best it can be in the sim as compared to the real world!

TIP OF THE DAY: To make smooth turns during taxi, start by applying full rudder in the direction of the desired turn. Then, if needed to increase the sharpness of the turn, maintain full rudder deflection and slowly apply gentle brake pressure on the forward rudder pedal only. To stop the turn slowly release the brake pressure first, then return the rudder to neutral. After a little practice, this procedure will become much more natural, and you won't even have to think about it.

This last update has officially made this plane operate like real bird. The only issue I forgot to mention is the spool up time of the engines. When on the ground when you give it throttle there is no delay. The engines are very responsive at the initial throttle up on the ground for taxi. Once this is corrected you have a real world DA40 modeled here. Thanks so much for these last few refinements.

I really wish there was an engine page like the Cirrus. I thought I didn't have the latest update but it appears I do and the engine page is not modeled for this bird. It's a big part of the checklist. Something I know you can't modify. This is a WT request.

Thanks again for this great real-world feedback... I'll take a look at the engine and prop to see if the RPM spool up response can be improved.

TIP OF THE DAY: The left wing tank on this aircraft is the MAIN tank, and it supplies fuel to the engine when the Fuel Selector is in the NORMAL position. The right wing tank is the AUX tank, and fuel must be manually transferred from this tank to the MAIN tank by turning on the FUEL TRANSFER switch as needed to maintain lateral CG balance and ensure that the MAIN tank does not run dry. The Fuel Selector can also be switched to the EMERGENCY position to draw fuel directly from the AUX (right) tank if the transfer pump has failed.

TIP OF THE DAY: The Free-Castering Nosewheel on this aircraft is limited to 30° max, so it cannot turn with one wheel stationary. The POH says to turn the aircraft with one wheel stationary, one person must manually push the tail down to lift the nosewheel off the ground while another person pushes on the wing to turn the aircraft.
