Description
Mae Sot is a town on the western border of Thailand, in neighborhood of Myawaddy of Myanmar. In 2019, the airport is upgraded with runway extension and new terminal which could accommodate single aisle jetliners. Although it is an international airport, there were only limited international flights between 2017-18.
As the west end of the runway is only 2km from the border between Thailand and Myanmar, only the east end of the runway can be used, i.e. takeoff on Runway 09 and landing on Runway 27 only. On the other hand, a mountain ridge is present on the east of the airport, make sure you can follow the altitude constraints, especially on approach. One of the most important point is not NOT to fly under 3600ft before FAF (MERES), as you will pass the ridge with not much terrain clearance. From the approach chart in Thailand AIP, there are 2 points which need attention during approach. Firstly, the descent gradient of the RNAV approach does NOT coincident with PAPI, so follow the PAPI as the reference for descend gradient once you can spot it. Secondly, missed approach procedure shall be within BKK FIR only, which means that you may need to do a missed approach not beyond MAPt (SURUN) if the approach failed to be stabilized, otherwise you may end up flying into Myanmar airspace.
In real life, you are discouraged to get there. The highway just outside the airport can take you to Myanmar directly, where Myawaddy is notorious for different kinds of crimes like fraud, online gambling, human trafficking, sex assault and even organ harvesting. Many people from different countries in South East Asia have been scammed or even kidnapped into the "camps" of the criminal syndicates in Cambodia and Myanmar in recent years, then being forced to commit crimes. One of these "camps" called the "KK Park" in Myawaddy is probably the "final destinations" of the victims, where they would likely be killed for organs at the end.
