ITALIANO

Via Mediolanum-Bellasium passed through Dexium, the Latin name of Desio, which connected Milan with Bellagio. The origins of the town of Desio seem to date back to the pre-Roman era, at the time of the domination of the insubrious Gauls. In fact, a sacrificial altar from this period was found which bears a dedication to the gods hands.
According to toponymy, the name of the city derives from the Latin expression ad decimum as the village was located about ten Roman miles from Milan, while according to other sources the name derives from the Roman god Jupiter, in turn derived from the Greek Zeus, later transformed into Deus and then into Deussio, the name by which the village remained known until the 10th century.
The village, known by the toponym of "Deussio", already at the time must have been in a strategic position in the commercial field since it was located along the road that connected Milan to Como.
Desio began to acquire relevance starting from the year 649, when the archbishop of Milan, San Giovanni Bono, gave the order to build a parish church in Desio, dedicating it to the saints Siro [unclear] and Materno, making it part of his project of conversion of populations of Lombard origin who evidently inhabited the entire area. This church was followed by those of San Giovanni Battista, San Bartolomeo and the Santo Crocifisso as well as the oratory of San Pietro.
From this primitive church, throughout the Middle Ages, the Pieve di Desio grew and developed which made the village acquire a notable pre-eminence over many other inhabited centers of the area to the point that already in the 13th century Goffredo da Bussero in his Liber Notitiæ Sanctorum Mediolanensis described her as the head of forty-two parishes.
