    Fantasy of Flight (FA08) - Image 1

    Description

Some libraries are required for this scenery to display as intended! Please see Dependencies!

This scenery is compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Although, like in 2020, it is recommended to disable photogrammetry. Leaving it enabled causes terrain seams across the runway in a few locations. This is a core sim issue that I have not been able to find a work-around for.

Located in Polk City, Florida, Fantasy of Flight is home to Kermit Weeks collection of vintage aircraft.

This scenery is based on the original FSX scenery by Vassilis “Dimus” Dimoulas, and has been "converted" to MSFS with his permission! Although I say converted, the models and their textures are the only thing that remains from the original scenery. The airport has been rebuilt from the ground up using MSFS native models, materials, and more!

Improvements have also been made to the original objects, improving performance by reducing drawcalls and adding LoDs. Some models have also seen some other improvements, including fixes and increased texture resolution by means of AI software.

As of now, this release currently includes the following features:

    • 15cm/px aerial imagery - Color-matched to the surrounding Bing imagery.
    • 3-Meter Digital Elevation Model.
    • Many custom models, including buildings and static aircraft.
    • Detailed placement of object libraries, including vegetation, fences, clutter, animals (static), and more!
    • Includes improved road and markings: Broadway Blvd SE (559), which runs along the entrance to FoF.
    • Improvements to many lakes and ponds in the surrounding area.

    Requirements
    Installation

The "esd-airport-fa08-fantasy-of-flight" folder should be placed into your MSFS "Packages\Community" folder. The addon scenery will load the next time you start Microsoft Flight Simulator.

    NOTAMs

Before commenting, please understand that this is a development release, which is not perfect! The following are current known issues:

    • Some models (such as runway warning signs) are not placed as accurately as they could be. This is because each model places 2 signs at once. This will be fixed in the future, but requires a complete overhaul of the model.
    • Photogrammetry is available in the area. The scenery will work with it, but there will be some slight elevation differences that may cause certain objects to float, as well as other cosmetic issues. I have tried to mitigate this as best I can in v0.5.0, however Asobo will ultimately need to address issues with photogrammetry.
    • The airport name currently displays as the old designation. This has been corrected in the scenery, however MSFS does not update this information for existing airports at the moment.

Great Scenery and the updates since I last downloaded this are really good.

Awesome job recreating the museum! Gives a really fun place to fly into in Florida. Really appreciate the continued excellent support of both your payware and freeware.

Nice scenery but the runway is now like a bumpy dirt bike track. There is a step on the concrete too. Not sure what's happened to this addon.

2020 or 2024? Beta or Stable? Make sure you're not using photogrammetry. This airport just doesn't do well with it on. Might be the elevation issues you are talking about?

2020 stable with photogrammetry on. I'll try with it off. The aircraft jumps into the air from runway bumps. Thanks

Yeah, turn that off for sure. This has been a long time (reported) issue. Seemingly not something I can fix, unfortunately. I have tried pretty much everything over the last few years. It's a difference in how the photogrammetery terrain system handles terraforming changes. The default terrain and PG are separate systems and do not handle elevation changes the same way. A shortcoming of that is at LOD tile boundaries where you hit those steps on the runway. They align with the standard system, but PG has some level of error and even if the tiles meet perfectly, for whatever reason it still generates a step. Even throwing another terraforming poly over that seam doesn't fix it. A flaw of the system that is up to Asobo to fix, unfortunately.

I see, thanks for the great addon & for your replies.

I started going to Fantasy of Flight in 2010/2011 on a yearly basis as a kid. In 2012 my family and I got to fly in a D-25 biplane together out of FoF. In 2013, a week after my 16th birthday, I got to handle the controls of an airplane for the very first time in a Stearman out of FoF. This Stearman was No. 204 of the U.S. Navy, and I love that a model of it has been placed on the ramp near the parking lot! That is the very first airplane I ever flew, and now I'm a commercial pilot (almost a flight instructor).

Thank you for making this scenery and allowing me to relive some of my childhood memories! Hopefully I have a chance to return someday when Kermit Weeks has the place open to the public again!

Works pretty good in 2024. Runway is unfortunately very bumpy though. Any chance for an update?

Sometime here. I'm focused on my paid products and object library at the moment. Pretty much all of my addons need to be adjusted or altered in some way to work correctly, so I'm just working through things one step at a time. This one might take a little longer because I will need to redo all of the custom model LODs to get it to work natively in 2024, which is what needs to happen to get rid of the terrain issues.

As of yesterday's sim update, there was a fix that has now flattened out the runways. Unfortunately this update also caused some severe performance issues at this airport, but one of the Asobo devs has stated that that issue should be fixed in an upcoming patch.

Great scenery. Unfortunately, runway 26/04 is virtually unusable due to bumps/cracks in the terrain.

    I'm looking into it.

This only seems to be happening when Photogrammetry is turned on.

I have spent some time playing around with this and I am not going to be able to fix it at this time. The terraforming system does not correctly override the terrain when photogrammetry is enabled. Same goes with aerial imagery, where the resolution gets absolutely trashed.

This is a core issue with the sim and Asobo have stated that terraforming likely will not be corrected for some time. So, unfortunately, all I can recommend for the time being is to just turn off Photogrammetry when flying out of FoF.

I have filed an additional report on it, so they are at least aware.
