This scenery is for Grimes Field I74 in Urbana, Ohio. I grew up around this airport and I have always wanted to recreate it in a flight simulator. This is a work in progress so please message me to provide feedback and recomendations. I have not developed the night time scenery or lights for this airport yet. My computer is pretty powerful so I am unsure how optimized the scenery is. I am a very new scenery designer and I utitlized Blender models to create every custom building in the scenery.
Some key features of this scenery:
- Completely customized buildings with real world photo textures.
- Two open door hangars that have full interiors that you can spawn into.
- B25 Champaign Gal custom static model.
- Updated taxiways with correct signs as well as custom signs.
- Very detailed Airport Cafe.
- Grimes Flying Lab C45 testbed custom static model.
History of Grimes:
The field was built and named after Warren G. Grimes (1898–1975) who was an entrepreneur and inventor from Urbana, Ohio. He founded Grimes Manufacturing Company and is known as the "Father of the Aircraft Lighting Industry". In the 1930s, Grimes moved to Urbana, Ohio and started Grimes Manufacturing Company and purchased the Johnson farm, located on the northern side of Urbana where he built his residence and an airstrip which became Grimes Field Airport. Grimes invented the familiar red, green and white navigation lights found on the wing tips and tails of aircraft and other electrical fixtures for aircraft including landing, instrument and interior lights. By World War II, Grimes Manufacturing Company produced aircraft lighting for US military. It is noted that "every American-made airplane flown during World War II was equipped with Grimes lights."
This scenery is dedicated to the memory of Gerald A. "Jerry" Shiffer who played a huge role in developing Grimes Field as a historical aviation center.
This is also dedicated to all the volunteers that support the airport and the staff that run the airport.

I live here! This is unbelievably accurate. Down to the signage & every detail is spot-on. I am super grateful I came across this. I would never have thought my small-town airport would be in flight simulator.
Thank you for this !!

First local airport Ive flown that doesn't look like a ghost town! Amazing amount of detail. I've only completed three circuits (with touch n go's) at Grimes Field, and then taxied all around the airport. Thank you kdrain10! Wish I knew how to do that! I'd fix my local airport, Youngstown Elser. Looking forward to more!

Thanks for the review! I would love to spend some time on Dayton Wright bros, Huffman Prairie, and Wright Pat. I am in the process of learning more about the PBR textures and night time scenery.

What an amazing scenery for the Midwest. This scenery has really everything you’d want to see at a small airport. Open hangars, folks hanging around, pie!!! The smallest things help make this scenery leap out of the sim. Job well done and can’t wait for the next airport from this creator!

I've been simming for many years (66yrs old) and designing scenery for other sims. This is the first one I have commented on due to its beauty and creativity. Outstanding job! Please keep up the great work. A side note: for Christmas I ironically received an original Beacon made at the Grimes Manufacturing Lighting company. Again, great job!

Thank you! That means so much and I appreciate your feedback. My father worked at Grimes for almost 30 years so I love any time I find old Grimes lights to collect.
