NEW in v1.1: added Eglise Saint-Jean l'Evangeliste
The fortress of Najac or castle of Najac is a former royal fortress which stands in the town of Najac , in the department of Aveyron , in the Occitanie region , on the western limit of Rouergue , on the borders of Quercy and Albigensia . It was built between 1253 and 1266 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Louis IX, on the foundations of a former castrum, and on its Romanesque keep, built around 1100 by Bertrand de Saint-Gilles, son of Raymond IV, count of Toulouse .
Najac was the seat of a royal vigil. Several of the articles of the privileges granted to Najac in December 1368, indicate that it was during the siege of the senechaussee of Rouergue until 1370, when it was definitively established in Villefranche-de-Rouergue.
During the summer of 1643, the castle of Najac was taken by revolted peasants during the jacquerie led by Bernard Calmels, dit Lafourque. This revolt which raised more than 10,000 peasants, failed in front of Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Mazarin's troops, led by Count de Noailles, governor of Najac, retook the castle. Bernard Calmels and two of his lieutenants, Ferrier, and the weaver Mathieu Vergnes, were arrested, condemned and beaten alive in October 1643.
After this period, the castle of Najac is no longer used and left to decline. It is only during the French Revolution that it takes on a rather important role. Sold as national property in 1794, the castle was bought for twelve francs by a local innkeeper who used it as a stone quarry to build houses. The castle is then abandoned.
At the end of the 19th century, the castle was renovated in part by Father Brunis who then resells it to the Montalivet family. The family completely renovates it and makes it a touristic spot in Aveyron.
The remains of the castle and its second enclosure are classified as historical monuments , by order of July 3, 1925.
NEW in v1.1: The Saint-Jean l'Evangeliste church was built during the 13th and 14th centuries. This is the first Gothic church built in Rouergue and it was classified as a historical monument on June 14 , 1924.
The fortress and the church were recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet. The fortress comes with its own lights and POI.
