Swiss High Altitude Strips - Image 1

    Description

When others go backcountry flying the swiss go glacier flying. There are roughly 25 official glacier landing sites that even have their own ICAO codes.

The strips in the package are excessively simple, they consist of:
    • One or more runways with terraforming (from GIS-data) to smooth the mesh
    • One or two parkings as spawn points
    • New: Tracks in the snow so that you can see where the strip is (depending on lighting)
This is a somewhat experimental concept - let me know what you think of it. And whether it's worth doing more.

    List of Strips:
    LSVD Clariden-Hüfifirn
    LSVK Glärnischfirn
    LSYI Limmerenfirn

    Instuctions:
Installation: Just unpack the zip in the community folder.
    Limitations:
    • The glaciers seem to be recognised as sand. There's even some grass growing on some of them. Adding 30cm of snow in the weather settings improves things
    • Terraforming artefacts (kinks) at the ends of runways. Once again we'll just have to wait for better tools and/or better mesh data
    • The current low resolution mesh is not really up to the job
    • The parked yellow cub is sometimes wings level, sometimes wings properly parallel
    • you will just have to imagine skis

Great job, I really appreciate your work...
Looking at your pictures, could you tell me which month and how many cm of snow you had in your set up ? I tried many combinations and I get either everything covered with white snow without seeing the rocks, or, if I suppress the snow, I see the rock but I get grass coming out of the snow, even if I put grass off...!

Glad you like it. I think it's mainly Glärnisch with the grass on, so it needs more snow. The pictures here are from Hüfifirn. I don't think it has got any grass on, so you just need enough snow to make it white (around 20-30cm?).
Or is it different for you?

BTW: Have you tried the "ItalyDem"-scenery together with these fields? I think it really improves it.

Yes, I did try with "ItalyDem" scenery: at first I liked the fact that the mountains are less rounded and it looks better; however, I have a high end PC with everything "Ultra" in the graphics setup and I got 45-50 FPS. When I add "ItalyDem" scenery, my FPS drop to 20-25 and I see first the mountains peaks even more rounded (than the MSFS bing maps) before they become sharper when I approach them (as opposed to have them with same shape from far to closer) .... So, I removed it. How about your Frame Per Second with ItalyDem scenery and do you see the mountains "forming" when you approach them?

I'm working on a couple of Bush Trips through the Alps and the missing high altitude strips are a big problem for me, especially in the Valais and Grisons regions. As you add more airstrips this would be huge for me.

Do you have a priority list?

    Sure.

    1) There is an airstrip above Murren that looks really cool to use.
    2) Any one of the strips around Zermatt, like on the Theodul glacier.
    3) I can't seem to find any references to them, but I am looking for airstrips anywhere along the valley between Hinterrhein and Chur.

My bush trip is intended for the Savage Shock Ultra, which can pretty much land anywhere. I've landed it on top of buildings, LOL.

LOL, yeah I know they exist - we just need them in the sim. But Blumental (near Murren) and Theodulglacier (near Zermatt) would be great to have.

Its perfectly possible to land on Theodulgletscher in the sim without an addon :-)

Awesome addition with the tracks! I love it! Thanks!

    Nice addition and work.
My feedback: I would replace the cubs/aircrafts with something else to mark the locations. Maybe you can add some skidd marks, tire marks along the runways to make them stand out more. Maybe something wooden.
To be honest, I'm the kind of guy who in general dislikes that many people chose to place aircrafts at the most remote strips they make. One example: The Idaho backcountry strips people build and share all have at least 1-2 parked aircraft. This leads to a situation that you have 50 parked aircraft in that area at all times, which is highly unlikely and not really realistic.

But that's just my two cents. Still superb idea!

You're right, I'll have to experiment with materials to get ski marks on the ground. So that they show on top of the generated snow as well.
Until then, the second most likely thing to encounter in these places is probably a cub...

    Version History

    - Still the same strips but with tracks in the snow instead of the yellow cub. - Put half a meter of powder on your mountains in the weather settings. - The tracks are based on 2048x2018 normal maps - so quite low resolution stretched out to nearly 200m. Will probably experiment some more using painted lines to see if their normal maps get transferred on top of the snow.
