The Volga - Russia's lifeline

The Volga, with its 3530 kilometers of length, is the longest and most water-rich river in Europe and one of the longest rivers on Earth (17th place). The Volga is also the longest endorheic river on Earth, making it one of the largest bodies of water that have no natural connection to the world's oceans.

Archaeological findings prove that people have settled on the Volga since ancient times. Some historians consider the fertile area around the estuary to be the cradle of the Indo-European peoples. For the earlier peoples, the river provided a traffic route that enabled them to conquer and trade in areas as far away as Central Asia. Thus, the Volga is THE lifeline of Russia to this day.

Moreover, the Volga is a myth, brought forth in numerous songs or paintings, such as the one by Ilya Repin about the Volga horse riders. Before the Volga became the river of the Russian Empire in the 16th century, it was a multi-ethnic river. Until their deportation under Stalin, the Volga was also the home of the Volga Germans, who settled on the Volga at the invitation of Tsarina Catherine II. They founded towns and villages, built farms and factories, and helped Russia achieve a significant economic boom.

The river became the border between oppression and freedom with Stalin's reign of terror, when deportations from the European part of Russia to Siberia or Kazakhstan began, when gulags were established - mass graves of freedom and human dignity.

• MULTILINGUAL: The trip is machine translated into all MSFS languages except Chinese and Japanese. Therefore, there may be errors in the translation. If anyone knows a better translation, please send it to me. The basic language is German.
• The GPS course does not always follow the course of the river exactly. Navigate with the HDG button.

Die Wolga – Lebensader Russlands

Die Wolga, mit ihren 3530 Kilometern Länge, ist der längste und wasserreichste Fluss Europas und einer der längsten Flüsse der Erde (Platz 17). Die Wolga ist außerdem der längste endorheische Fluss der Erde und gehört damit zu den größten Gewässern, die keine natürliche Verbindung zu den Weltmeeren haben.

Archäologische Funde belegen, dass an der Wolga seit Urzeiten Menschen siedelten. Von manchen Historikern wird die fruchtbare Gegend um das Mündungsgebiet als Wiege der indogermanischen Völker betrachtet. Den früheren Völkern bot der Fluss einen Verkehrsweg, der es ihnen ermöglichte, die Gebiete bis hinein nach Mittelasien zu erobern und dort Handel zu treiben. So ist die Wolga ist bis heute DIE Lebensader Russlands.

Die Wolga ist darüber hinaus ein Mythos, hervorgebracht in zahlreichen Liedern oder Gemälden wie von Ilja Repin über die Wolgatreidler. Bevor die Wolga im 16. Jahrhundert zum Strom des Russischen Reiches wurde, war sie ein Vielvölkerstrom. Bis zu ihrer Deportation unter Stalin war die Wolga auch die Heimat der Wolgadeutschen, die auf Einladung der Zarin Katharina II. an der Wolga siedelten. Sie gründeten Städte und Dörfer, bauten Höfe und Fabriken und verhalfen Russland zu einem bedeutenden wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung.

Der Strom wurde mit der Schreckensherrschaft Stalins zur Grenze zwischen Unterdrückung und Freiheit, als die Deportationen aus dem europäischen Teil Russlands nach Sibirien oder Kasachstan begannen, als Gulags errichtet wurden – Massengräber der Freiheit und Menschenwürde.
