    Cessna 170B Backcountry - Image 1

    Description

This aircraft simulates a 1954 Cessna model 170B with a 145 hp Continental O-300-A normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine and fixed-pitch propeller. It is fitted with a STOL kit consisting of a leading edge cuff and molded wing tips. Empty weight comes in around 1,300 lbs. with a usable payload of around 800 lbs.

    Available Versions:
MSFS 2020 Original version 1.2 - 26" bushwheels or straight floats
MSFS 2024 version 2.0 - 26" bushwheels, 29" Tundra tires, 35" Tundra Tires, Straight floats, 180 HP variants

The fixed-pitch prop is selected for climb performance over cruise speed, so expect the top speed to be no more than 110-115 knots.

The flight model is intended to feel underpowered and stable to fly due to the stock engine. Give it a chance to build some speed and you'll be off.

    "Super" 170 Modification
To keep up with the hot-rod Carbon Cubs and KitFoxes, you can install the optional engine and prop mod. Adding this package to you Community folder will add a new STC Lycoming IO-360M1B fuel injected engine and modern propeller. This combo is tuned for short takeoffs and climb rate. Top speed will suffer a bit due to the fine pitch of the propeller.
Version 2.0 has 180 HP variants. Version 1.2 has an optional additional mod to install which will override the original engine.

    Version 2.1.1 (June 5, 2025)
Fixes an issue that prevented walkaround mode in the wheeled variants

    Version 2.1 (June 2, 2025)
Now with a basic autopilot unit to make long cross-country flights a little easier. The Nav and approach hold works with VOR localizers.

    Version 2.0 (March 1, 2025)
Finally, we have a MSFS 2024 native version of the Cessna 107b Backcountry. This time there are three different bushwheel variations, the original 26", 29" Tundra tires and 25" Tundra tires. The straight floats are still available.
Jon Conghlin's competetion STOL livery is selectable.
The Tundra tires have some new features: They will pick up dirt if you roll on dirt surfaces and clean up on other surfaces. They also feature deformation which can be adjusted by setting the tire pressure. To use the pump, exit the plane and crouch by the left tire. Clicking the center of the tire should attach the pump. The green button inflates and the red button deflates.

    Version 1.2 (Jan 26, 2022)
Thank you to everyone who downloaded the first version and provided feedback. I took a lot of your comments and suggestions and got back to work. There are many fixes but notably, the scale of the plane has been corrected and should seem closer to the actual size. I've tested the flight model to ensure it still handles great and should be even more fun to fly.

I included six liveries this time and a few different panel and interior options. You can mix and match texture files to match your own personal taste.

This was only possible due to the very generous help from the amazing texture artist twoseventyinc, who volunteered to give the textures a hi-res update and improve the model to make liveries easier.

I'm wondering, is there a paint kit available, or someone that isnt half bad at repaints? I found out a friend of mine owns a C170A (i know but close enough) and I wanted to recreate his plane for him.

How do you turn on the autopilot panel? I searched the readme and can't figure it out!?

To enable the autopilot, there is an unlabeled toggle switch with a red light next to it. I forgot to add that to the instructions.

Great plane for bush flying, powerful engine, great interior graphics. My only downside was the exterior and no door handles but overall good plane

Amazing freeware! One question - do the water rudders work? If so, how do I put them down? Thank you!

Thanks! The water rudders do work and are quite effective. There should be a lever on the floor to lower them. I think I may have had a release where that was missing. You can also bind them to a controller or keyboard key.

Absolutely phenomenal aircraft. I however am experiencing an issue with the transponder. After turning master & avionics on, and the transponder doesn't come to life. I try to move the transponder from "OFF" to "ALT" (or any other position) and it springs back to OFF. All other avionics work, the only issue I have is the transponder

I just checked it to see if I missed something and I am not having a problem setting the transponder modes.

Is it possible you have a control binding that might affect the transponder?

I released a new update, version 2.1.1 to fix an issue where you could not use walkaround mode or exit the aircraft. My apologies. Thanks to @Muky for point this out.
