    PMDG DC-6B - Varig - Image 1

    Description

    The pioneer!

I had to learn new painting techniques to be able to reproduce this DC-6B with maximum fidelity in the colors of the now deceased Varig. I hope it represents well one of the companies that best represented Brazil as its flagship company, and with this work I complete all the paintings of all the DC-6 that flew under Brazilian airlines. All 5 aircrafts flown by Varig included and PP-YSI as main file.

Varig inherited the DC-6s from Real Aerovias (see painting available for download here) when it acquired the latter during 1961, which in turn acquired them from SAS (PP-YSI, YSJ and YSL) and Northwest (YSM and YSN), even though they were no longer the most modern equipment available, and therefore not used by Varig on international routes, they were very useful on high-density domestic destinations, serving mainly Brazil´s capitals in the south and southeast. They were removed from Varig's service in 1968 with a great service record and no accidents.

After that, all 5 hulls were acquired by the Brazilian Air Force and then switched to military registrations, the PP-YSI became the FAB-2412, the YSJ 2413, the YSL 2414, the YSM 2415 and the YSN 2416, serving with the 2nd/2nd GT at Galeao Air Base where they even took part in international missions. Unfortunately, the FAB-2414 (former PP-YSJ) suffered an accident in 1971 with 16 fatalities, being the only accident with victims during DC-6s service in Brazil, which was also flown by Loide Aéreo Nacional, Panair do Brasil and VASP (all companies with their liveries available for download).

Like my other projects, I hope to keep this project updated and corrected, and I accept contributions of photos and documents that can help in this mission.

I would like to thank the Cultura Aeronáutica blog for the information and references provided.

    A pioneira!

This beautiful livery has become useless because the cumbersome "ptp" import doesn't work anymore for this file

There is no further explanation given and since we cant unpack it can also not be fix by ourselves

This is for people who still dont understand why this ptp crap must go. it is utter lack of respect for the time of artists and users to enforce a proprietary packer that is superfluous and works like shit.

Hi mate, I was not aware that there were issues with the PMDG OC, so I made some changes on the files and it seems to be working now.

Btw; agree with you, if there's an operation centre that does not repair third part liveries that need update, why having it in first place?

let me know if the issue persists!

Jamespejam... I bought the PMDG DC-6 because of its repainting of the old Varig, but when I installed it through the PMDG Operations Center, it worked, but on the wings and under them, there were some white stripes of the engines behind, two on each wing, with the rest of the wings being normal, what would it be? My MSFS is updated to 1.25.7.0...

HI mate, It works fine here, can you please send me a printscreen?

Yes, can I send, where do I send your email?

Amazing ! Based on the pictures, it's a big nostalgia when it comes to the old and former L-188 Electra vastly operated by VARIG. I remember when I was a 7yo boy in 1986 watching them with my grandpa from a big window at SBSP. I don't own a PMDG DC-6 but this livery alone makes me want to buy a copy hehe ! Congrats !

    Espetacular !! Belo trabalho !

How do I install it? There is just one file VARIG.YSI.ptp

Como instalo? Só tem um arquivo VARIG.YSI.ptp

    Hi rc vale,

Open the PMDG Operations Center that comes with your PMDG DC-6, Select "Aircraft and Liveries" from the top menu then click "Install from PTP file" and select the .PTP file you downloaded.

This way you make sure that the livery will keep working if PMDG or Microsoft updates their structure.

Hope you have fun with this livery!

No menu superior "Aircraft and Liveries" clique em "Install from PTP File" e selecione o/os arquivo/s .PTP.

    That worked! Thanks!

    Funcionou, obrigado!

    PMDG DC-6B - American Airlines

American Airlines was one of the most important customer and development partner of Douglas and pushed for the production of the DC-6, getting the first production airplane operating a total of 51 units. American Airlines suffered some accidents due to a design flaw of the early DC-6 and grounded them in 1947 as a consequence, but kept using with great succes after the issues were solved and therefore pushed for the development of the DC-7 with longer range after that. Here depicted is the N90738 "Flagship Dayton". I will probably do some more of the different flagships and can try to do some specific by request.

Here depicted the DC-6 as operated in the beginning of the operation with ABA Sweden SAS, the DC-6 were of great importance both to the consolidation of SAS  during it´s early years and also to the start of the transpolar routes, due to the exceptional reliability and the gyrocompass autopilot, shortening the travel time between scandinavia and north america and far asia. Some machines were fitted in the later abandoned sleeper variant, here visible in the upper row of small windows.

    PMDG DC-6B - Loftleiðir Icelandic

Founded in 1944, Loftleiðir took full advantage of Iceland´s geographic position and stayed outside of IATA in order to set travel prices idependently on top of that DC-6´s range and realiability enabled affordable travelling between US and Europe, later in the 60s the company was nicknamed "hippie airline" due its low fare, which would require an stop in Iceland making the trip considerably longer.
