The Belmont Transmitter and Stenigot Radar Tower, Lincolnshire, England - Image 1

    Description

The Belmont transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications structure in Lincolnshire, England. It is owned and operated by Arqiva.

It has a guyed tubular steel mast, with a lattice upper section. The mast was shortened in April 2010 and is now 1,154 feet (351.7 m) in height. Before this it was 1,272 feet (387.7 m) high and was considered to be the tallest structure of its kind in the world (taller masts, such as the KVLY-TV mast in the United States, use steel lattice construction), the tallest structure of any type in the United Kingdom. After the top section was removed, the mast's reduced height relegated it to the second-highest in the UK after Skelton.

Despite the mast being shortened it can be seen in daylight on clear days from most areas close to and within the Lincolnshire Wolds.

We have included Stenigot Home Chain Radar Tower in this release. There is some serious history behind it, way to much to mention here but it's worth having a read of the Wiki about it: Chain Home Radar

It’s a great VFR reference and I’ve done my best to re-create it for FS2020.

Please see the attached PDF file inside the zip file which covers: Installation; Finding the community folder; Licensing; Credits; Contacts; Change Log.

This scenery works very nicely with other plugins I developed for the area, links should be at the bottom of the page.

    See you in the Sim!

The Chain Home mast is incomplete, and if you wanted to show it in its original form, you'd need to add the top plates http://www.johnhearfield.com/Radar/Towers.gif. Picky, picky - I know, but I remember them when there were still 3 standing there. Here's a diagram of what a complete array looked like, BTW http://www.johnhearfield.com/Radar/Exciter.gif. Perhaps you could use these to build on your work and create a whole Chain Home radar site (please). Here's a picture of what the (transmitter) tower part of a station would have looked like, for interest https://d3d00swyhr67nd.cloudfront.net/w1200h1200/collection/IWM/IWM/IWM_IWM_LD_5735-001.jpg. Until just now (showing my ignorance) I hadn't realised that Chain Home consisted of both transmitter masts (like the Stenigot ones) and receiver masts (!) (plus a number of brick buildings). Here's a link that sows both sets of masts, plus a complete tower http://www.rochforddistricthistory.org.uk/documents/ChainHomeCanewdon1.pdf.

Well, that's probably more than you wanted to know about Chain Home, so sorry if I've bored you silly!

    Hi John,

Thanks for the messages and the rating. Yeah I went through a lot of the historical information on the Chain Home when I was putting this together originally, really interesting stuff and THE beginning of radar.

For the time being I decided to make it true to current real life for the VFR pilots, but may do another historical version at some point. Payware products are our main priority at the moment with the revenue being quite slow to come in.

I'm also going through and updating our back catalogue from our freeware era to make sure it's all still compatible and adding a few improvements here and there. The other remaining Chain Home towers will be the next update to release.

    All the best,

    Chris

NP. I understand - I suppose that I'm excited at the idea of using some common objects to create more period scenery. It strikes me that the Chain Home tower and a couple of brick buildings of the era could form the basis for a quite useful library for other developers. Just thinking out loud...

My Grandparents lived about halfway between these two Lincolnshire icons, in Donnington-On-Bain, so these two offer me rich memories of my youth (up until I was 5, anyway, when we emigrated)

    Thank you.

Hi - another fine job! Is there a way to get Belmont to show whilst using the We Love VFR addon? I can only see their tower, not yours. I can see your Stenigot though.

Hi mate! Thanks for the coffee!
Yeah I just checked on that, it's the same situation as the Humber Bridge, my tower is inside their lattice structure, you can just see the TV backup transmitters poking out of the top

Hi, Chris. Great models! To prevent conflicts just add an exclusion rectangle under your object. This way if the user has the correct order in his Content.xml file mods will be compatible with each other. Unfortunately, I can't do this with We Love VFR as it is more general, like autogen expansion, and should be overwritten by local, amazing mods like yours.

Just to clarify, my 8 year old liked and followed my post on this release. It took some investigating but that's the only reason he was giggling uncontrollably after he left the office for bed time, and why I'd done that to my own post which I didn't. The mind boggles!

Hi, can all these Lincolnshire area mods ie Dock tower,Spurn lighthouse, Humberside airport and tv tower be kept inside one folder ? Or must they be separate. Community folder getting bigger and bigger.

    Hi car767,
They need to be separate, for the time being anyway. The original plan was to have one plugin that covered Lincolnshire and Yorkshire expanding from the Humber Bridge as the centre point. Unfortunately that went belly up when the Official UK update was released with it's own Humber Bridge. There may be a way of doing what you suggest that I haven't read about yet in the SDK and I will take a look tomorrow because it would make my life a lot easier too. I'm grouping things together in a 5-10NM radius at the moment to try to keep the directory count down. I hear where you're coming from and I'll see if there's a better way of managing the deployments. I'm doing this on a free basis and if you need to delete all the downloads I have provided so far do please go ahead.
