Autopilot InGame Toolbar Panel - Image 2

    Description

    Autopilot Toolbar Panel

My first InGame Toolbar Panel - be kind ;)
This Panel grants access to basic Autopilot controls from the Toolbar Panel.
Buttons trigger im Game Autopilot functions. Heading bug and selected Altitude can be controlled by knobs.

The full Autopilot features only work if any Autopilot Function is available in the plane's configuration
[Purpose] this Panel can help you if:
    - Your plane has autopilot functions but no cockpit panel (C152, Rans, ...)
    - The planes autopilot is hard to learn, you are unfamiliar or it is buggy.
    - Autopilot controls are missing (no HDG bug, bad ALT / VS selector)
    - you want to control the autopilot in third person
    - you want to upgrade a legacy autopilot (Bank -> Heading Hold, VS -> FLC)
    - you need a basic wings level mode to keep your plane steady.

    Experimental custom Autopilot

If there is no Autopilot available in the plane, there is the option to use a custom experimental autopilot algorithm.

The experimental custom Autopilot is a very basic ROL / VS HOLD mode, that enables you to fly wings Level if you need a break or have to look at maps.
It is not built for navigation purposes, just to fly wings level or in a circle while having a break without crashing.
The Algorithm is a very basic control loop, so be careful. It is not very resilient against any wind, maneuvering, speed changes and so on.

There is no Heading Hold in experimental mode, so there will be a turn or drift over time, even in WINGS LEVEL mode.

The experimental Autopilot works with Helicopters and Gliders, if using only ROL mode. It's tricky, test it on your aircraft first and be careful on longer trips.

The Experimental Mode uses flight control surfaces to control the attitude of the plane. There are three control modes that may be use depending on use case and availability:

    1. aileron trim, elevator trim:
    - most stable
    - most realistic
    - trim need to be available
    - works best on modern GA aircraft

    2. aileron deflection, elevator deflection:

    - works on aircraft that do not have trim (Helicopters, Ultralights, Gliders, ...)
    - may be very rough and prone to flips

    3. rudder trim, elevator trim:

    - trim alternative for planes that have no aileron trim (early war birds)
    - less stable

    [Usage] Getting started:

    - Open Panel from the Toolbar
    - select Autopilot Mode with push buttons
    - use Heading Bug (right) by scrolling
    - use Altitude Selector (left) by scrolling
    - toggle Alt 100 / 1000 ft steps with left click
    - use VS and IAS selection buttons (scrolling possible)

    - toggle experimental mode by clicking on the text below
    - cycle control mode by clicking on the text below (click spot may be to the right)

This was a great practice for me.

    Known issues:

    - Some States do not display as expected (LOC / GS arm, ALT arm, ...)
    - Heading bug sometimes skips ranges (-1 to 270)
    - Alt selector 100/1000 ft step user feedback not working
    - HDG button sometimes triggers HDG Hold, sometimes HDG Sel
    - FLC auto selects current speed buggy
    - Panel window cannot be minimized any further

The Experimental custom Autopilot is very good for planes that don't have AP and you need to take a quick break from the PC withut stopping the SIM.
Thanks and keep improving this feature please, maybe make a slide for sensibility.

Good Idea for the sesibility slider

Does this work with addon aircraft? I could use it for the FSS E-Jet in helping me set speed/alt/etc. also the Carenado mooney since it doesn’t have FLC

It does not add Autopiot Modes that the AIrcraft does not have. It only toggles the present modes.

I see where it helps with streamline a lot of things and the potential is huge where I think Microsoft devs really fell short, but I am noticing issues with some features. Starting with activation, maintaining VS, persistent defaulting to 10K feet without letting me adjust, and I'm still messing with nav function a little though I seem to remember you mentioning some things so I will revisit that and see if the nav issue is me making a mistake. Far as the other stuff, is there anything that can be done to help remedy?

you are talking about the defaul AP mode, not the experimental feature right?

yes. right now, I'm on the ground trying to set basic settings so I can take off flip AP and FD on in NAV. When I try to turn AP on basics setting flicker long enough to see and then off again

I t works using the cockpit buttons? Panel Buttuons should just trigger the same events ...

OK I'll give that a shot when I'm back on. I'm away from my computer now but should be back before and keep you posted. Thanks

grad and drop to community directory as any other addon

Great and thank you for sharing. As I'm not familiar with Autopilot or English, could you describe and name the different buttons on the panel (abbreviated to 3 letters) and even describe them in French?

That would be fantastic! Thank you!

    Thank you for your message.

My French is unfortunately not good enough to explain everything precisely, so I used AI to help with the translations below.

Here are the abbreviations and their meanings:

    AP – Autopilot
    → Pilote automatique
Engages or disengages the autopilot system.

    HDG – Heading
    → Cap
The aircraft follows the selected heading.

    NAV – Navigation
    → Navigation (GPS/VOR)
The aircraft follows the programmed navigation source.

    APR – Approach
    → Approche
Used to capture and follow ILS/localizer and glideslope.

    ROL – Roll
    → Maintien d’inclinaison
    Maintains current bank angle.

    LVL – Level
    → Mise à niveau
Returns the aircraft to wings level.

    FD – Flight Director
    → Directeur de vol
Provides guidance cues without engaging the autopilot.

    YD – Yaw Damper
    → Amortisseur de lacet
    Reduces yaw oscillations.

    UP – Nose Up
    → Monter
    Increases pitch or selected value.

    DN (Down) – Nose Down
    → Descendre
    Decreases pitch or selected value.

    IAS – Indicated Airspeed
    → Vitesse indiquée
    Maintains selected airspeed.

    VS – Vertical Speed
    → Vitesse verticale
Maintains selected climb or descent rate.

    ALT – Altitude
    → Altitude
    Maintains selected altitude.

    VNV – Vertical Navigation
    → Navigation verticale
Follows vertical profile from flight plan (if available).

    I hope this helps.

I wanted to thank you for this. I was frustrated with it earlier, but now it works perfectly for me as of v1.0.7.
I use a Tobii Eye Tracker. They track head and eyeball movement. The only time eyeball tracking isn't good is when I'm setting knobs and dials in the cockpit. This operates all of that by mouse on another desktop.

Awesome tool! This is huge and I hope it keeps getting the attention it deserves. This should be standard in the sim. Sometimes there just needs to be a simple easy to use AP such as this. 5 stars just for the effort and work you are putting into this. Looking forward to future updates and stability

    Autopilot InGame Toolbar Panel

The Autopilot InGame Toolbar Panel provides users with easy access to basic autopilot controls directly from the Microsoft Flight Simulator toolbar. It is designed for aircraft that have autopilot capabilities but lack a physical cockpit panel, or for those struggling with complex autopilot systems. The panel allows pilots to manage autopilot modes, heading bugs, altitude settings, and various selectors, all from a user-friendly interface. Please note that the add-on requires compatible aircraft configurations and may have some known issues with state displays and functionality.
