About this file

FS-ATC-Chatter is a smart ATC chatter player that can play mp3 clips of ATC communications. The player was written to play the 24,000+ ATC clip collection that is sold commercially on the Stick and Rudder Studios web site.

This upload contains the player and 400+ demo clips for the United States. You can add your own clips if you wish or purchase the larger collection from Stick and Rudder Studios.

Here is a demo video that shows how the player works.

To install simply download the archive and unzip it to your local drive. Read the UserGuide.pdf in the root folder for more information.

This works with FSX, FSX Steam Edition, P3D V1 - V5, and MSFS 2020.

Nice addon but what i would love to see is the liveatc.net option which is live ATC using that now just have to switch every time. should be nice to have an option in your app to do this in there. Even nicer, for areas that have no live atc streamed you use the mp3s for areas that have the Liveatc active for that frequency you hear the live stream, now that would be an awesome option for sure in your app.

Is there anything in the log files in the FS-ATC-Chatter folder? Does it work if you run it as administrator?

The clips are curated using volunteers. It would be great to get more people to help grow the collection and there are some nominal rewards for volunteers. You can read more about the program here:

I purchased this a few days ago I feel it's a thoughtful add-on that works well, depending in which areas you fly.

For instance, I flew Frankfurt to Zurich and received no chatter.
Barcelona to Madrid I received a moderate amount.
There is no UK ATC chatter due to recording restrictions. Just a heads up. US and Canadian regions is where this add-on really shines. There's plenty of chatter there.

Would rate a 5 if there were more clips available for more regions of the globe. The application itself is genius and works perfect. Pretty much just open it and you're good to go once you've set it up.

use liveatc.net for those areas, thats why i said it would be nice that the app useses the liveatc.net live atc for those areas.

    Hi.
Thank you. This is a great addon! Only one little thing. Is there a way to make your app aware that the FS2020 ATC or I are currently transmitting in FS2020 (ATC calling me, or me calling ATC)?
I often get ATC chatter while asking for take off clearence etc.

I have sent an enhancement request to Asobo to add something to SimConnect so I know when FS2020 ATC is trying to talk. If they add that then we can pause the chatter. I hope they add it as that is the way the X-Plane player works.

Hi, I just added hotkey to Joystick to pause this, when MSFS ATC needs to interact. I also changed delay minimum to 15sec - 90sec for max delay between clips. I have FULL version now so more clips available to me.

That is the same way I handled stopping the chatter when ATC needed to talk to me.

Hi @MarkCEllis Thanks for this sooooo much better than listening to MSFS atc.. bought this during BlackFriday sale.
I noticed that alot of the Freq MSFS uses around South America as a example don't match ATC chatter, so I use Comm 2 set to 123.275 manually.
Ps I tried the import tool, from Github as suggested in manual but it doesn't appear to recognise Steam, version. I looked through config file but could not see any file locations lookups. I noticed in error log says Official/steam/Onestore. It should be Official/steam [OneStore is only used with Xbox/ MS-Store]. Any help appreciated, coding and SQL is really not my thing. TIA

Edit: File location MSFS 2020 Steam

I assume you are referring to the NavDataReader tool. I think there is a command line switch where you can tell it where the bases scenery files are located. It tries to figure it out automatically with the -f msfs but there is a way to tell it the path.

Let me know if you figure it out.

I tried to use it I believe on two aircraft (maybe 3) but could not get it to work. I switched channels and everything but nothing. I read the manual as well. Is there a list of airplanes this will not work for?

Slow73, You must unzip the folder to anywhere on your drive.(I have it on my desktop) Then open the folder & right click on the "FS-ATC-Chatter" .exe (the 6th 1 down from top-a blue globe icon) & pin to start menu. Next time your in the Sim hit your win key & click the ATC start menu & it will pop up in your cockpit. ADJUST VOLUME ( I HAD TO TURN MINE UP ALL THE WAY) & pick a country on the menu to hear different calls. These are recordings so not real time unless you add an ATC app. PS-If you have a country or continent check You have to be at an airport or flying within that region + you might try ground & then try departures until 1 of them works. also if you have only Asia checked & you're in the US you get nothing.

Hey thanks. Even before I read your answer I was able to get it working but only in the King Air in the KDEN (Denver) area. I didn't do anything special other than switch radio frequencies as normal. Have you gotten it to work with all aircraft?

Yes, aircraft have nothing to do with it. It just has to have the sim on so it knows where you are by any planes location. You have to make sure you have the correct region & type of info (dep, arriv, tower & try a few. I haven't tried with too many aircraft yet as in X-Plane it worked with any plane or helicopter but this sim might be different & that would be better answered by the Dev. It could be only airliners though I don't know, but my experience with years on x-plane was it worked with all of them. You could be onto something. I'll post if I learn anything, cheers !

When it is not working do you have any text right above the Collapse and Settings buttons? That usually tells you why it isn't playing chatter.

By the way, I really would like to get to the bottom of any situations where it is not playing chatter. One of the things I struggled with is what is a reasonable set of defaults. In this version it is defaulting to automatic controllers and using radio power so you need to have things setup right before it plays chatter:

    Connected to Sim
Radio power on (with a plane that is setting that sim variable properly)
Tuned to a facility that is within 100 NM of your position

If people get confused by this maybe we are better off having those options off and then it will start playing chatter at a default controller as soon as you start the app.

    Feedback appreciated.

Slow73, I have been able to get it in every aircraft I've tried so far but haven't tried all of them. Remember that I have the full version which has exponentially more channels so I have radio virtually all of the time. I think that may account for less activity. To change the topic, I had the map yesterday & can't find it anymore. I've clicked every spot on the app but it's gone ? At least I can hear it, cheers !

If you are referring the button that brings up a Google map at your location the button is in the top right of the nearest facilities window. Is it missing?

Take a look at the screen shots above.

is this only "background" ATC ?
if yes, can I still have "normal" ATC chatter with MSFS ATC for IFR flights simultaneously ?

  • image
    MarkCEllis replied Author

It plays separately from any ATC communication that MSFS is generating. I have requested an enhancement from Asobo to give us visibility to when MSFS 2020 is trying to talk on ATC so we can pause the chatter.

can't you hear MSFS ATC's call at you, or is the ingame ATC mute while this add-on is On ?
With the ingame "nasty" ATC sound, you should be able to hear the difference when it calls you, or am I missing something here ?

You should be able to hear both of them unless you shut-off the MSFS 2020 ATC sounds.

You may not be able to answer this question, but I will ask anyway... In MSFS are the other radio calls you hear coming from AI traffic (either randomly generated or representing a real world flight, its all AI) or do you also hear the calls of other players? For example, two friends using discord to communicate, decide to spawn into the same airport at gates right next to each other. Of course you can't chat over the MSFS radio but would you still hear each other's ATC communication chatter? I am asking because I am trying to understand if it communicates with the other players or simply creates the illusion of it. So if it turns out msfs ATC is pointless window dressing, then of course I would use yours instead. Its much higher quality, more variety, and best of all spoken at the higher speeds found when making real life radio calls.

I'm not really sure how Asobo is generating the background ATC communication you hear with the AI traffic.

I know some people are using Discord for group flights and some add-on plugins that emulate a radio through Discord. I don't know how good they are.

Obviously you have the online networks for that like VatSim and POSCON but they tend to want you to behave like the real world.

It is entirely feasible to enhance FS-ATC-Chatter to allow voice communication between players. I'd love to know more about what you find on this topic. I'd hate to waste the time building that functionality if there is already something out there that people are using and like.

I'll try to answer this as best as I can, but maybe someone else is more knowledgeable than me. It gets a bit confusing and complex, but the two friends will have to spawn on the same server at exactly the same time. And even then, they won't be able to hear each other's in-game ATC.

It's just not how the game was designed - and is mainly a solitary experience. Let's assume their online settings are the same (Live players, Live ATC, and Live Traffic), can you imagine how busy an airport like JFK would be? The taxiways and ATC would be unbearably busy, to the point of frustration.

Assuming they have played online before, they would have seen other live players in the sky, as those players will pop up with just their username showing. They won't be able to hear the other player's ATC (as its not designed that way), but even if they could, it would be generic responses.

Depending on where they are in the world, there is another solution: a real-time ATC player. Many airports in the US broadcast live ATC, and the most popular is https://www.liveatc.net

They could in theory tune in to where they are, and have that playing in the background - switching frequencies depending on what they are doing like clearance, departure, approach or Tower.

There is another option too, but it involves a bit of homework. They could join a VATSIM network for free, and actually talk to a human ATC on the VATSIM network themselves. If they are looking for a realistic ATC experience, there is nothing that comes closer.

As a long time user of this on X-Plane I can only tell you how glad I am to have this on MSFS as I muted the annoying default ATC but miss the radio. I would recommend this to anyone & I will be getting the full version for sure. Glad you took this opportunity !
