31 Challenging Bush Strips in PNG - Image 1

    Description

Some of the most interesting and challenging bushstrips are located in Morobe province, northeastern Papua New Guinea. Many (but not all) of these airstrips are included in standard MSFS, but almost unflyable due to the vegetation and bad implementation of the runways.

Note: For some airstrips there are other sceneries available. Do not install the extra package if you already have installed one of these airstrips by another creator.

    Main package:

AYBG, AYNM, AYSZ, NMG (Nomaneneng), AYOG, LNC, AYVB, MXK, AYPD, MPG, AYFI, AYEW, AYQS, AYSW, AYWS, AYDE, AYYW, AYIS, AYTP, MEN (Mengang),  PIV (Pivin), AYSD, AYNS,  BAJ

    Extra package:

BWJ, AYDN, GOR (Goriok), AYBC, AYNA, MIB (Mibu), AYCG

The goal was to make all these airfields flyable, while at the same time increasing realism. In the default sim most of these airfields are just lanes in the forest, so I reconstructed the vegetation around the airfields and the neighboring villages as accurately as possible, based on the aerial imagery.

    Improvements compared to standard scenery:

    • Runways completely re-done, new profile, better integration into terrain
    • Vegetation thinned out, redone
    • Added scenery objects such as fences, bushes, houses, cones, etc.
    • Terrain and vegetation fixes in the area auround the airstrips
    • The majority of the airstrips (but not all) have parkings for cold and dark starts

No extra assets are required, everything is made using assets coming with MSFS as standard for better performance, less stutters and easy handling. Just WX53 Bugaluga from default sim has to remain installed.

The main scenery is compatible to wantok's terrain and airstrip fixes: papua-new-guinea-airstrip-maintenance

    Installation

The zip file contains two packages

    • friedlir-airports-lae (main scenery)
    • friedlir-airports-lae-extras (extra airstrips and vegetation fixes)

Install these by copying them to your community folder, just as usual. But do not install the extra package if you have other airstrips or sceneries in this region installed. You can use MSFS Addons Linker to enable and disable conflicting packages easily.

    Update 3.9.0

    • Added airports LNC, AYVB, MXK, AYDE, AYDN, GOR, MIB

    Have fun!

A fantastic scenery, thank you very much.

Is there already an update for FS2024? That would be amazing?

    Thanks!
I just checked ICAO codes and AYYW, BWJ, AYDN are also made by OrbX and there are other freeware AYNA and AYFI here in fs.to. (edit: and AYBC) (edit2:AYTP, AYIS in ORBX PNG2). Just adding these here to save people some time from searching.

I know that there are other freeware sceneries for some of these airstrips. That's why I split my scenery into two separate packages. The second package "friedlir-airports-lae-extras" should only be used if there are no other conflicting sceneries installed. And I think the payware airstrips came later. By the way, if you really want to use both, there is still the possibility to just delete the conflicting BGL files. This is a bit a hack, but should work.

Looks like some of the ICAOs used are in used in other world locations: IE: GOR is iin Ethiopia, MEN is Mende, France etc

The three letter designators are for airstrips that don't have an ICAO code. In MSFS there should be no conflicts. The ICAO code must not be confused with the IATA code (for example Mende has the ICAO code LFNB, but the IATA code MEN).

Ok thank-you. will give it a go.

    Love it!

I’m in the process of visiting all of these strips.

Would it be possible to add at least one parking spot to each? To start cold and dark for the next leg another day…

Thank you for your feedback. I already added parking spaces to some of the strips. So in any area you should find at least one airstrip with parking. And I will add more in the future.

Thank you so much for this. Looking forward to more packs from you.

    Great work, thank you!!!

Unfortunately BWJ had already been done as an excellent work by Photosbykev. Is it possible to exclude this airfield from your collection? Would be great! Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, I noticed that too late. I am just about to finish an updated version where I will remove it.

    Awesome!

AYNM has multiple vegetation growing out of the buildings on the left side of the runway facing downhill, it would be great to also have some parking at BWJ. Great mods.

Thank you! I will try to fix this in the next release. But in general this will happen sometimes, as the autogen vegetation is a bit difficult to control. And I try to reduce the performance impact of the scenery, I use as much standard elements as possible.

And in the next version I will add new airports, two of them with parkings. Adding parkings is a bit more work (I have to add invisible taxiways, airport services etc.), so I prefer to do more airstrips instead.

    Can't wait!

To be honest, every single airfield should have at least one parking space so we can start cold and dark which is more realistic instead of being forced to start ready for take off on the runway, I never fly from a field that doesn't have one for that reason and it's annoying when an addon doesn't include at least one. I know it's a pain that they added the taxiway link requirement recently but it wasn't that hard or much time to add them to my own addon so please try to do that going forward, the taxiways don't have to be perfect.

Whitehawk... dude. I understand why it's nice to have a cold start, and I add them in my scenery, but: this is freeware. It represents a significant investment of time, given freely to the community (and it's very good work). I've gotta tell you, you comment comes off a little demanding.

Regarding parking though, in case anyone wasn't aware, the recent version of the SDK has removed the requirement for parking spots to be linked to a taxi path. You can again place parking spots with no taxi path at all. It'll throw a yellow caution, but will still build just fine - it's no longer a red warning that prevents a build.
