    INFO AERODROME

The Aquino Airport was established around 1926 as a makeshift airfield. The construction of a new facility began on February 20, 1937. It was officially designated as a "Class III Armed Airport" from January 1, 1939. Three months later, pilot training courses commenced at the airport, with the school officially ceasing its activities on December 1, 1942. However, the educational activities continued until December 17 of that year when the airport was "handed over" to the German Air Force. Only a small garrison of about forty Italian soldiers remained, while the arrival of German soldiers was continuous. Life in Aquino underwent a radical change, as the airport became one end of an air bridge that inevitably connected to the most intense war zones. Flights to North Africa, Pantelleria, or Lampedusa, primarily using Junkers aircraft, became commonplace.

On July 19, 1943, at 11:30 PM, isolated aircraft flew over Frosinone and the province, bombing and strafing the Aquino Airport, causing significant damage to its facilities. On July 20, 1943, at 2:00 AM, several aircraft flew over the province of Frosinone and Cassino, dropping numerous incendiary bombs on the latter town, small-caliber bombs and fragments on rural centers in the province of Frosinone, and disruptive bombs on the Aquino Airport, which suffered substantial damage.

On July 19, 1943, at 12:10 PM, a formation of fifty four-engine bombers flew over the Aquino Airport, releasing disruptive bombs that caused severe damage and destroyed thirty aircraft on the ground. After the end of World War II, the airport became a base for the Italian Air Force until February 20, 1971 when it was converted into a civilian airport and became the home of the Aeroclub della Ciociaria until 1995. The airport was then used for light general aviation and sporting events. In the summer of 1992, the absolute championships of skydiving were held at the airport, featuring 4- and 8-member freefall formation disciplines. On June 2, 1994, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Cassino, the Aeroclub della Ciociaria organized an event with the participation of the Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team, the Falchi Blu parachute team, and the HFD Society (the current sole concessionaire of Aquino Airport).

Due to budgetary issues, the Aeroclub della Ciociaria was placed under receivership in 1995, and the airport was closed. In September 2005, the HFD Society was granted a concession for Aquino Airport by the Italian Civil Aviation Authority. After years of abandonment (1995-2005), during which the airport became an illegal landfill and the flight infrastructure was completely inaccessible, the HFD Society made significant private investments to restore the facility and make it fully operational again.

Airport Vergiate - Aircraft and Helicopters (LILG)

Airport Vergiate - Aircraft and Helicopters (LILG)

Airport and Heliport. Vergiate Airport (ICAO: LILG) is an Italian airfield located in the municipality of Vergiate, in the province of Varese. Vergioate airport was built in the mid-1930s on the initiative of the SIAI-Marchetti aeronautical industry of Sesto Calende, which needed a runway adjacent to its factory to test its aircraft. During the Second World War, between June and July 1940, the airport was the operational base of the 23rd Group of the Italian Air Force. With the passage of SIAI-Marchetti under the control of Agusta (which later became Agusta Westland and finally Leonardo Elicotteri) the Vergiate airport maintained its primary function as a test runway; however, the structure is also open to private traffic. Vergiate airport is located 11 kilometers from Gallarate, 55 kilometers from Milan and 20 kilometers from Varese; the closest airport is the Milan-Malpensa airport, just 10 km away. The structure has a single 800 m long asphalt runway (suitable for small planes and helicopters), two aprons for aircraft and helicopters parking.
