    P-51D Mustang "Moonbeam McSwine" N51VL - Image 1

    Description

This is a repaint for both the P-51D Mustang included in the full version of the Reno Air Races expansion for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, and the P-51D Mustang included as default in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The repaint depicts the restored P-51D Mustang USAAF Ser. No. 44-12473 (actually 44-73656), when registered as N51VL and owned/operated by the Warbird Heritage Foundation based at Waukegan, Illinois, from 2018-2024. Since 2024, the aircraft has been owned/operated by Peter Monk's Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, located at the London Biggin Hill Airport in the UK, now registered as G-MCSW. It is painted in the markings of "Moonbeam McSwine", the personal mount of Captain William T. "Bill" Whisner Jr., of the 487th FS, 352nd FG, 8th Air Force, based at Bodney, in Norfolk, England, and at Asch, Belgium, 1944-45.

This repaint has been specially refined for use with the excellent Improvement Mod by Randall Snow, available here.

This repaint features an almost complete reworking of the original product textures, and includes all new cockpit, wheel well, landing gear and landing gear door textures, all custom to match the real aircraft with the correct colors and other details.

This aircraft was originally manufactured as P-51D-25-NA USAAF Ser. No. 44-73656 and delivered to the USAAF on March 29, 1945. It was shipped to England, but arrived too late for assignment before the war ended in Europe. Shipped back to the US, it served in the post-war years with several different Air National Guard units, including in Texas, Virginia, Colorado, Minnesota and California. In 1956, it was sold surplus onto the civilian market at McClellan AFB, and in the 1960s it was rebuilt with Cavalier modifications by Trans Florida Aviation and later served with the El Salvador Air Force as FAS 406 from 1968-1974. When sold back into the US, it adopted the serial number 44-12473. The aircraft was acquired by Gordon Plaskett in 1975, registered as N2151D, and restored in the markings of "Moonbeam McSwine". Then, following seven years of ownership with Chris Williams, the Mustang was purchased by Vlado Lenoch in 1988. During the time Lenoch owned the aircraft, he flew it in many airshows around the country and even raced it at Reno in '97 and again in '99, when he won 1st place in the Bronze race, and participated in qualifications but did not race in 2000. After 25 years of ownership, Vlado Lenoch sold the Mustang to Fred Akary, of France, in 2013, who registered it as F-AZXS, and the aircraft became a popular attraction at airshows around Europe and the UK for the next several years. Following Vlado Lenoch's death in a Mustang accident in 2017, the Warbird Heritage Foundation was able to acquire "Moonbeam McSwine" through a trade with Akary, which saw the Mustang brought back to the US in 2018 and re-registered as N51VL.

In late 2024, "Moonbeam McSwine" was sold to Peter Monk's Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, located at the Biggin Hill Airport near London, England. Registered in the UK as G-MCSW, the Mustang is used to sell experience flights from Biggin Hill, Cotswold and Blackbushe airports (passengers riding in the back seat).

Any chance of this gorgeous livery working in 2024?

Not yet. I've been waiting for the 2024 Marketplace to open, so that we can start downloading and accessing the aircraft files - so far, without them, I haven't been able to get any of my P-51 repaints to show-up in the 2024. However also, right now, I have little interest in the 2024 Asobo P-51D until the right flap and aileron animations get fixed/added.

With Moonbeam being our "hometown bird" here in Chi-town, how can I NOT download this livery? Bomber12th, you absolutely knocked it out of the park. She's just as gorgeous as the real-world counterpart. Vlado would be proud. :-)

I saw you instruction to install this to the "Base P51" but im not seeing anything other than the named P51s for the reno air races variants

EDIT: It looks like i may have to buy the base reno pack instead of one of the mustangs separately

All pink textures for me, interior, exterior, and windows. Wish I could figure out why, because it looks exemplary.

The archive is constructed incorrectly. You'll find that it's duplicated/nested. If you compare it with any other Community livery you should be able to work it out. I hope Bomber12th updates the archive ;)

Quoting an AVsim user who fixed it,

the texture folder at the bottom of the folder tree must be moved inside the JT_P-51D_Moonbeam_McSwine-folder.

I moved the texture folder into that folder, and then used MSFSLayoutGenerator to rebuild the layout.json

Not sure if the last step was necessary.

Really like this livery. The interior is beautiful. The exterior is beautiful as well, but if I had one criticism it's that the fuselage has more of a bare aluminum look while the wings have more of a painted silver look. Small gripe though, I'll still us it.

I am sorry about that. Something went haywire when I put the file together for the last updated version of the repaint. I have now fixed the issue and re-uploaded the repaint.

With regard to the silver-painted wings and horizontal tail surfaces, if you look at photos of the real aircraft that this repaint depicts, you will see that the real aircraft also has silver-painted wings and horizontal tail surfaces.

Thanks! I was thinking about the painted wings, in a real aircraft polished aluminum wings would blind the pilot. Figured it was authentic.

This livery is simply stunning. Excellent work, really transforms the Asobo 51 imo. Great job, man!
