Glider Landing Challenges - Image 1

    Description

A set of Landing Challenges for Glider pilots using the Gotfriends Discus and Madolo LS4.

Use the runway threshold as your reference point and try for a fully held-off landing in the blue square, but note that a soft landing on the runway centre-line is as important as a short one.
This is a game rather than a training exercise...but you should always try to fly as if it were real so use the circuit to position yourself for a 2/3rd airbrake descent to the runway threshold at 55-58 Kts then rotate and hold-off to land gently.

    Hinton-in-the-Hedges

Wind is light from approx 240, land on 24 hard.
Your altimeter is set to QNH, as Hinton is approx 500ft AMSL subtract 500 from your altimeter reading and aim to be at high-key no lower than 800ft AGL.

    Talgarth

A more challenging challenge - Talgarth in the Black Mountains
Wind is 15 Kts from approx 330, land to the West, allowing for the cross-wind.
Your altimeter is set to QNH, as Talgarth is approx 950ft AMSL subtract 1000 from your altimeter reading and aim to be at high-key no lower than 800ft.

You start overhead the field, the weather is suitable for soaring the main ridge (head North-East).
Once you've had enough ridge-soaring head back for your landing challenge...if lost, follow the Nav back to the airfield.

As Talgarth does not exist in MSFS the airfield and runway is added as part of the Challenge, but it is also available from the World Map for creating your own flights, as XTHG.

    Bicester

Sadly now a shadow of it's former self, just for the memory - Bicester. Use of https://flightsim.to/file/18071/bicester-airfield-egdd is recommended.

Wind is approx 270, land on the South West runway (24), your altimeter is set to QNH, Bicester is approx 250ft AMSL.

The freeware Bicester Airfield - EGDD is required
    https://flightsim.to/file/18071/bicester-airfield-egdd

    Dunstable

Birthplace of British gliding (and where I first flew a glider), use of EGLR is required.

Wind is approx 270, land on the South West runway (24), your altimeter is set to QNH, Dunstable is approx 500ft AMSL.
The ridge is working if you want to visit the zoo and ridge-soar first. If you get lost, follow the Nav back to the airfield.

The freeware London Gliding Club - EGLR is required
    https://flightsim.to/file/17091/london-gliding-club-eglr

    LSOD
Wind is approx 30 for 13, land to the NorthEast allowing for the sink as you approach the runway
Your altimeter is set to QNH, LSOD is approx 6000ft AMSL
A left-hand circuit is suggested, but keep plenty of speed on and a good height above the runway
Use the runway threshold as your reference point and try for a fully-held-off landing on the blue spot, a soft landing on the centre-line is as important as hitting the spot

The wind is from the NorthEast if you want to ridge-soar first.

The freeware OD Gliding & Soaring Club (LSOD) is required
    https://flightsim.to/file/26167/od-gliding-soaringclub-lsod

    NZOD
Wind is approx 50 for 10, land to the north
Your altimeter is set to QNH, NZOD is approx 10ft AMSL
You have full water ballast in the wings to practice a racing finish (keep speed well below VNE!), remember to start emptying them 2 minutes before landing
The mountains are close if you want to ridge-soar first, remember your stall speed is around 10 Kts higher with the ballast

The freeware OD Gliding & Backcountry Club (NZOD) is required
    https://flightsim.to/file/27696/od-nz-backcountry-club-nzod

    South Downs
Wind is approx 30, land on the NorthEast runway (04).
Your altimeter is set to QNH, EGVS is approx 100ft AMSL.
A right-hand circuit is suggested so as not to cross the aerotow runway.
The wind is from the NorthEast if you want to ridge-soar the South Downs first.

The freeware South Downs Gliding Club is required
    https://flightsim.to/file/4724/southdown-gliding-club-uk

    Sutton Bank
Wind is approx 320, land on the NorthEast runway (02) watching for sink from the down-wind slope.
Your altimeter is set to QNH, Sutton Bank is approx 900ft AMSL.
Wind is from the NorthWest if you want to ridge-soar the banks first.

The freeware Sutton Bank Gliding Club is required
