Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet VFA-122 1943 Centennial of Naval Aviation Paint Scheme - Image 1

    Description

Presenting the default Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet in the special Centennial of Naval Aviation 1943 scheme sported by Hornet 163733 of VFA-122 "Flying Eagles" in 2011. The scheme replicates the three tone camouflage pattern used during World War 2 and which replaced the earlier standard grey on white scheme in 1943 on Naval aircraft. This scheme didn't last long before it too was replaced in 1944 by the monotone blue that would last until after the Korean war. Though it only lasted a brief few months in regular use, the scheme has become idonic after it was used during the pivotal Battle of the Philippine Sea in which the Japanese carriers Shokaku and Taiho were sunk and in total more than 300 Japanese aircraft were shot down in what would be known as the "Marianas Turkey Shoot".
