NEW in v1.0: added Viaduc de Chaumont

 

The Charles-de-Gaulle Memorial is a monument located in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises in Haute-Marne .

After the death of General De Gaulle, the November 9, 1970, a national committee placed under the high patronage of Georges Pompidou, President of the Republic and supported by the “Gaullist barons” was formed on March 23, 1971 to erect in Colombey a monument symbol of French Resistance. A national subscription was launched, collecting several million donations. This subscription, well relayed by French diplomatic missions abroad, was also very successful internationally and funds came from more than 67 countries, collecting a total of 5.5 million francs. This sum made possible to erect a monument but also to acquire 35 hectares of land around and on which 1,000 cedars of Lebanon offered by Lebanon were planted, in addition to its significant financial contribution .

12 projects were in competition and it is the project of architects Marc Nebinger and Michel Mosser which was selected: a 44.30 meter-high cross of Lorraine made in reinforced concrete, for a total weight without foundations of 950 tons, covered with pink granite from Perros-Guirec. Nearly 350 craftsmen worked on the realization of the monument. It was inaugurated by President Georges Pompidou on June 18, 1972, day of the thirty-second anniversary of the call of June 18 .

During the year of its inauguration, more than 400,000 people visited the site. They were still 100,000 in 2012.

On November 8, 2013, the Charles-de-Gaulle Foundation under the aegis of the Heritage Foundation launched a national subscription for a renovation of the cross.

NEW in v1.0: The Viaduc de Chaumont is a railway bridge on the line from Paris-Est to Mulhouse-Ville, located in Chaumont in Haute-Marne and overlooking the Suize valley. A pedestrian way is laid out on the first level.

The viaduct is 600 meters long and includes 50 arches that rise to 52 meters. Its dimensions make it one of the most remarkable works of art of the middle of the 19th century  in Europe.

The Chaumont viaduct was features in the movie Le Pacha, starring Jean Gabin and Le Cerveau, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Bourvil and David Niven.

The memorial and the viaduct have been recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet. The Memorial comes with its own light and POI.
