Kansas City International Airport (KMCI) serves as the primary commercial gateway to the Kansas City metropolitan area, handling millions of passengers annually across its relatively compact but modern terminal footprint. The airport underwent a significant transformation in recent years with the opening of its brand-new single terminal in 2023, replacing the aging three-terminal configuration that had defined MCI for decades. A dedicated freeware scenery developed by community creators AvEngineer22 and yxflyer74, who have been working on this project since the MSFS 2020 SDK was first released, has now been released. After years of refinement, the pair has polished the add-on to a release-ready state - now šŸ”— for free on Flightsim.to.

KMCI Kansas City International Airport Airside

Rather than chasing photorealistic terminal interiors, the creators concentrated on airside accuracy — the domain they know best. The taxiway layout and naming have been carefully reproduced to match real-world charts, and airfield markings have been placed as accurately as the simulator's SDK toolset allows. Particular attention was paid to airfield lighting, with taxiway edge lights, centerline lights, lead-on and lead-off lights, high-speed lead-off lights, and animated in-pavement runway guard lights all positioned to real-world locations. The new terminal and its associated gates have been modelled, and additional parking areas for cargo and general aviation operations are also included. Airfield signage has been reproduced to the extent the SDK permits, and a companion GSX Profile is available separately on Flightsim.to for those who use GSX for ground services.

Looking ahead, the development team has outlined a roadmap that includes updates to the 1L–19R taxiway complex, the addition of all deicing locations, aircraft-specific gate stop positions within the GSX profile, and a continued reduction in dependency on third-party libraries through custom-built objects. If you regularly fly into the Kansas City area this release is well worth adding to your scenery library. As this is a freeware release produced by community volunteers on their own time, if you find the scenery enhances your flying experience, please consider making a donation to support AvEngineer22 and yxflyer74's continued work. You can find the add-on and the donation option on its šŸ”— Flightsim.to page.
