B-24 Liberator Repack (Flight Replicas FSX-Native Conversion) - Image 1

    Description

This is an improved repackage of the Flight Replicas B-24 Liberator conversion. The files were originally converted from FSX/P3D to native 2020 format, but the original upload did not work with MSFS 2024. A different team has worked on this "Repack" edition to ensure it is compatible with both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024.

This package is a fully standalone aircraft; it does not require the original files.

This update is being posted with permission of Flight Replicas. Thank you to FR for allowing this aircraft to be enjoyed for free!

    Highlights and ongoing improvements

Since the original release, the aircraft has received numerous incremental improvements across visuals, systems, sounds and flight dynamics, including:

    • Greatly expanded clickable cockpit functionality
      • Master Battery, Alternator, Magnetos, Booster Pumps, Turbo, Starter Switches, Nav Lights, Pitot Heat, Landing Lights, Instrument Panel Lights , Avionics Master, Parking Brake, Cowl Flaps, Bomb Bay, Sun Shades

    • New and improved flight model with ongoing performance tuning
    • Enhanced engine and fuel system logic, including booster pumps, priming, starter behaviour, mixture detents, and cooling management
    • More realistic engine start procedure. The flow adapted from the B24 POH is:
      • Enable booster pump

      • Hold PRIMER switch for 2-5s. Overpriming can be cleared by opening the throttle and waiting (check status in tooltip)
      • Hold ACCEL switch for approx 12s (until starter reaches 12000 RPM). IMPORTANT: Read the labels on the switches - they are not arranged as you may expect!
      • Mixure AUTO-LEAN.
      • Flick the MESH switch to crank the engine. Again note the switch labels carefully!
      • Note that CTRL+E can also be used as a shortcut to quick start the engines.
    • Optional Turbocharger simulation. Use the cockpit EFB to switch between:
      • SIMPLE TURBO: Use throttle levers to control manifold pressure. Additional boost above ambient barometric pressure is handled by standard MSFS turbo code. No need to use the Turbo levers (B-24D) or Dial (B-24J)

      • COMPLEX TURBO: Use throttle levers AND turbo controls to set manifold pressure. The throttle levers alone will only provide manifold pressure up to the ambient barometric pressure. You will need to use turbo controls to reach operational MP in most conditions.
    • Fully reworked engine and cockpit sounds
      • Entirely new engine sounds using samples from the freeware "P&W R-1830 Turbo-Supercharged Radial Sounds" hosted on Simviation.com, Posted May 19, 2013 16:58 by Kelly McKernan"

    • Cockpit EFB
      • Operational bomb bay (can also be toggled with key bind "TOGGLE TAIL HOOK HANDLE")

      • Toggle waist gunners and ball turret (J only)
      • Engine status
      • Basic autopilot
      • Copilot visibility
    • Visual upgrades to exterior normal maps and some cockpit textures, animations, lighting, and effects
    • Improved startup, shutdown, and auto-start logic
    • Mesh lights added to the model
    • Additional camera views, checklists, and quality-of-life refinements
    • Cockpit vibrations for immersion
    • Startup smoke
    • Contrails
    • Prop feather functionality
    • Cockpit side windows can be opened/closed
    • Cockpit and instrument lighting
    • Bomb drop animation can be toggled "TOGGLE FUEL DUMP" key bind or LVar "L:B24_Bombs_Drop"
    • Detailed Flight Manual. A PDF copy is included in the aircraft Docs folder, or an always up-to-date web version can be found here.

These updates have been developed collaboratively by the community. The core team is SeeRyFly, FlakNine and jjbz but we've had valuable contributions and permissions from FlightFizzix (flight model), zzGhost4 + Delta Simulations (EFB), ftl818 (flight model + cooling), Goffers2024 (sound tweaks) and lmenes (allowed reuse of Duckworks DC-3 code and logic).

This is a community project developed by amateurs in our free time and offered for free; we are striving to do this iconic aircraft justice, but do not expect payware quality. If you wish to help make the aircraft better, please do so. We would be happy to incorporate future improvements.

👉 Full version-by-version changes can be found in the dedicated Changelog section.

    Known Issues

    • Some cockpit switches are not clickable
    • Spawning on runway at very high altitude airfields may result in engines NOT immediately running. They should start up automatically if you wait a while. We are investigating the root cause of this issue but not been able to solve it yet.

    Local Variables (LVars)

The mixture levers use custom lvars for the auto-rich, auto-lean logic. This should all work with standard in-sim control mapping, but for those who want them, please refer to the Flight Manual - a PDF copy is in the aircraft Docs folder, or you can find an always up-to-date version here.

I downloaded and installed the model in my MSFS 2020 Commumity Folder. Although the liveries appeared in the hanger as options, none of them actually appeared in the sim as models?? :-) Any suggestions Guys?

Is there a checklist for this beautiful bird?

The in-sim checklist should work. And the included flight manual has procedures adapted from the real aircraft flight manual.

A quick update on version 22. It’s ready to go but the team have got locked out the “Cobramx” flightsim.to account we use for this project. Password reset isn’t working either - I’ve contacted support for help but no response yet. You can find a link to v22 in the MSFS Forum post for this aircraft.

    GREAT JOB ON THE B-24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad was a PIC of a B-24 during WWII so it is special for me to be able to fly this warbird. Thanks for all the hard work and long hours everyone has put into bringing this beautiful warbird back to life. Thank You.

One constructive comment about the turbo system : as it is, without the turbo, the engines reach 30" MP and the rest is given by the turbos to reach a total of 49".
In reality, the B-24 engines have both a mechanical supercharger and a turbo-supercharger; with the turbo off, the engines should still reach 37" MP. The turbos then add 12" more to reach the 49" maximum ( https://www.kensmen.com/b24how.html is a good reference).
Many thanks for your work, it's a great adaptation to MSFS2024 and it's getting better every release. Your work is much appreciated !

Thanks for the kind words and constructive feedback on the turbo. For simplicity we merged the logic for mechanical superchargers and the turbos into one block of the behaviour code - so you are correct that it's not a perfect simulation. This might be something we can revisit one day though!

Sorry, do I delete the previous version from the Community folder and then install the download?

Correct - it's always best practice to delete the old version from your community folder first, rather than simply extracting the new one "on top" of the old one.

One of the best warbirds for MSFS, and indeed better than some payware! I just finished reading Midnight Flyboys, and flying this B-24 Liberator is a great way to appreciate the WWII pilots, as well as recreate some of their daring missions. Thanks!

    Version History

    - Added functional opening/closing cockpit side windows. Due to a current limitation with the sound design of this aircraft, the engine noise is not affected by the window opening, however airspeed dependent wind noise is simulated if opened in flight. - Fixed texture mapping on compass in D and J variants. - Fixed incorrect startup smoke location in J variant. - Fixed a possibly benign error in fuel system code related to fuel lines. - Added bomb drop animation bound to "TOGGLE FUEL DUMP". Note the bomb drop is currently only cosmetic, we will work on simulating payload changes in the next update. - Added bomb bay key bind to "TOGGLE TAIL HOOK HANDLE". - Replaced low poly screws and bolts with better models on J variant instrument panel - more replacements planned in future updates. - First steps towards long-term goal of retexturing the cockpit models - full rework of UV map and PBR textures for: - Pilot and copilot seats (J variant only) - Cockpit wall fabric lining, overhead blackout curtains and cockpit door curtain (J variant only) - All-new accurate model and texture of Q1-B rheostat control for suit heaters on cockpit sidewall (both D and J variants) - Cockpit floor and walls (J variant only) - Removed support for PMDG DC6 sound package alias. - Cleanup of aircraft package to remove unnecessary files and be more efficient with common textures shared between D and J variants.
