    Cessna 172 (G1000) paintkit - Image 1

    Description

A simple paintkit for the Cessna 172 (G1000) so people can start creating liveries for it!

    This paintkit currently includes:

    • Original textures for the fuselage, wings, tail & decals
    • UV maps for the aforementioned textures (except the decals)
    • PDN files which combine these two things into one (will need paint.net to open these, but you can overlap them manually in Photoshop as well)

The included livery-c172-template folder can be dropped in your Community folder to install it. You can just overwrite the textures in that folder. If you are going to rename the livery and texture folder, make sure to update the entries in aircraft.cfg as well as the layout.json!

If you want a sharper texture, you can just resize the textures to 4K and paint over them, this will increase the quality of your livery but also increase the file size by 4 times, so you have been warned!

NOTE: This paintkit only works for the G1000 (standard) version of the C172, it won't work for the C172 that comes with the deluxe version of the game!

@CessSim You mention a tutorial - did you ever create it?
    Thanks in advance.

not yet mate. Still very much a research project at the moment. One day I will get it but likely when I retire next year and have some spare time !!

Just curious, I replaced the textures but the default livery still overlaps on top of the replaced files, do you know what is causing this? I'm figuring out how to make liveries and I am starting by just replacing textures.

I know the comment was from a while ago, and you probably found your answer or moved on, but basically, the C172SP_AIRFRAME_LIVERY_ALBD and C172SP_AIRFRAME_LIVERYCOLOR_ALBD textures need to be overridden with a completely transparent texture.

I never did find out, so thank you so much. By the way if I can upload the livery should I credit you for the paintkit?

    Hello:
I know absolutely nothing about paint kits nor how to use them. I am sure that a lot of other simmers stop here, download the software, and expect it to work kind of like a coloring book - a few minutes and voila, I have a new livery! However, looking at the files included with this download, that is totally incorrect.

Thus, to my suggestion: I would like to see a video in which you explain EVERYTHING about how to use your paintkit and a real example. I've left a low rating because, unless you already know how to use a paintkit, it is virtually useless!

    Thanks.

I agree my friend. I am trying to get a new paint kit for my YouTube channel for my C172 G1000. Once I learn how to do it, I will develop and post a tutorial (specific to this aircraft) that hopefully helps others.....CessSim

do you keep the model file name as TEMPLATE?

You can leave the model folder (MODEL.TEMPLATE) as is, just make sure that when you do rename the folder, you also update the aircraft.cfg at the "model =" line to your new model name

    Nice job.
I realized there is no indication on the template of what is this and that.... there are a lot of wireframed boxes, it could be helpful to realize by the template what each box represent.
    Thank you.

I would suggest you try and download something like msfs2blend ( https://github.com/bestdani/msfs2blend ) which is a Blender extension that is able to import the MSFS models into Blender, this way, you can view the UV maps yourself and see what part of the UV map corresponds with what part of the model. This is also what I use to export the UV maps. Another option would be to paint something somewhere on the texture and see where it ends up in-game, but this can take quite a while since you'll have to restart your game every once in a while. A last option would be to first open the model in Blender, convert it to an .obj, open the .obj in something like Substance Painter and use that to actually paint on the model itself. While it is possible to paint on the model in Blender, I found Substance Painter to be a lot more advanced with more options. It's up to you what you'd prefer, but I'd recommend looking up some Youtube tutorials for these things which will probably help you out better than I can :)

Thanks for the reply. In the meantime I found out that working with Blender is much easier.

I think the exterior textures are the same for the "classic" C172 which means you can just use this paintkit and change some things (especially the variation base in the aircraft.cfg) to use it for the "classic" C172

Great work releasing these paint kits with the uv mesh - these little suckers are really complicated to skin and you did a great service by putting these together and launching them - cheers!
