History

In 1964, a new terminal was built. In 1981, a concrete runway was put into operation, which allowed the airport to receive modern Tu-134 and Yak-42 turbojet aircraft. In 1988, the airport reached its greatest heyday: the number of takeoffs reached 14 thousand flights per year.

In 2015, the airport was awarded the status of an international airport.

In January 2017, the airport was closed for reconstruction until the end of the year due to the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches in Saransk. The runway will be reinforced with asphalt concrete. A new passenger terminal with an area of almost 7 thousand m2 and a capacity of up to 300 people per hour (600 people per hour during matches) was built. After the reconstruction was completed, the airport began to receive such aircraft as Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320. On February 14, 2018, the airport received its first scheduled flight after the reconstruction.
