Antarctica Airfield Pack - Image 1

    Description

There have been reports that some of the airfields have been surrounded by trees (maybe due to serious global warming) in FS2024, but it seems that it have been fixed after SU3.

It is quite a surprising fact that there are flights to Antarctica using ordinary airliner, so I tried to get the informations of airfields in Antarctica. In the recent version, there are 20 airfields have been added:

    • Boulder Clay Runway (AQBC)
    • Concordia (AT03)
    • D85 Skiway (AT05)
    • Fossil Bluff Skiway (AT10)
    • Kohnen Station Skiway (AT12)
    • Mid Point Skiway (AT14)
    • Molodezhnaya (AT15)
    • Neumayer Station Skiway (AT16)
    • Novolazarevskaya (AT17)
    • Odell Glacier (AT18)
    • Sanae IV Skiway (AT22)
    • Sky Blu (AT24)
    • Troll (AT27/ENOE)+#
    • Vostok Station Skiway (AT28)
    • Halley Station Skiway (EGAH)
    • Phoenix Field (NZFX)+#
    • Union Glacier Runway (SCGC)
    • Wolf's Fang Runway (AT98/WICE)+#
    • O'Higgins Skiway (SCBO)*
    • Wilkins Runway (YWKS)+#

Those airfields with (*) are built on sea ice. From the results of test flights, you can't start a flight from these airfields as aircraft will sink into water, or immediately end up in a crash. On the other hand, you must see that sea ice has been built up on the area for landing. As there are no reference about the landscape near the airfields, landing at night is dangerous especially during winter, where wind speed equivalent to a hurricane is usual.

Why there is no South Pole Station Airfield (NZSP)? The answer is not that straight forward. Most of the web mapping providers adapt the WGS 84/Pseudo-Mercator (EPSG:3857) as the projection standard, which the highest latitude supported is 85.05° north/south. Terrain beyond this latitude could not be rendered properly. In fact I've tried different methods to place the runway near the Geographic South Pole, but it failed to give anything meaningful, and only something erroneous as the result. However, I've placed a POI on it, so you can still try to fly there.

The snow groomers at the airports are from the Winter Asset Pack by Usatix, download this library here otherwise they will not show up.

True bearings (sometimes Grid bearings) should be used for navigation, as magvar over the continent varies a lot even for a short distance, and the value could even be as much as 180 degrees if you're flying somewhere between the Magnetic South Pole and Geographic South Pole.

Among these airfields, Wilkins Runway (YWKS), Troll Airfield (AT27/ENOE) and Wolf's Fang Runway (AT98/WICE) have published RNAV Approach or SID, see the links below for charts:

    Instrument procedures for Phoenix Field

The instrument procedures for Phoenix Field are partly implemented, with thanks to an undisclosed player. 3 SIDs and only one STAR have been coded where the coordinates of all the associated waypoints are known or built-in. On the other hand, 3 instrument approaches for Runway 33 (TACAN/TLS/RNAV) and 2 for Runway 15 (TACAN/RNAV) have been coded, with some waypoints could be calculated with good precision. Those TACAN approaches have been coded as VOR approaches as there is not much non-military aircraft which can receive TACAN signals, while the TLS approach has been coded as Localizer approaches. From the results of test flights, the radio navaids works somehow erratic, which may caused by the very great local magvar of the area, or Grid headings have been applied as per documents. All the vertical glideslope of the approaches are -2.5 degrees except TLS and RNAV Runway 33 with the standard -3.0 degrees. For Runway 33 TACAN approach,  track VORTAC "ZFX" radial 322, while it is 151 for Runway 15 TACAN approach.

    Helper NDBs

For airfields with jets operating on them but no published instrument approach is known, I've added some fictional "helper" NDBs to facilitate better navigation and approaches. (You can't imagine something bulky like VOR or ILS antenna to be installed on Antarctica) Here is the list (more will be added later):

    • SCGC - "UGL" / 360kHz
    • AT17 - "NV" / 280kHz
    • AQBC - "BC" / 340Hz

    Ground handlings

There are 4 airports (marked by #) with apron being explicitly defined, with parking bay assigned. Only Phoenix Field and Troll Airport have refuelling available.

I have also made the livery of Skytraders for A230neo, although they use A319 in real life.

To look for the missing airstrips on the other side of the Earth, you may have interest for the Arctic Airstrip Bunble by me.

Hi! You never responded to my comment about removing the trees in MSFS 2020 for Vostok, Concordia And D85 Skiway, may you please do this asap?

Hi! Would it be possible to add the buildings in the 2020 version as well? For example, for Troll airfield there's just the runway and nothing else.

I've removed them for those major airfields in recent releases. However may I know where do you still see the trees?

Hi sorry for the late reply I still see them in Vostok, Concordia and d85 Skiway

Hey I have it downloaded in 2024, but its not showing up? At SAWB

SAWB is not included in this addon. Someone has made a very detailed one

    Does GSX work with this?

I don't have GSX so I haven't made the corresponding profiles for them, but what kind of ground services would you expect for the airfields in Antarctica?

Union Glacier is showing up in the middle of the North Sea.

SCGC in my addon is not marked as "Star Airport", so I think the one you see on North Sea is not from this addon

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was yours or the Union Glacier Camp by danielsjam. But even with his removed I can't get yours to show up. (Edit, I found it. There is an SCGC heliport and it was conflicting)

Hi and thanks for these brilliant addons. One thing I have noticed is that the location of the NZFX airfield marker and the runway don't seem to be at the same location. Is that intentional?
    k

The ARP of Phoenix Field in this addon is set at the midway of the runway. Maybe the ARP of the airfield on your side comes from other sources.

No problem, I'll see if I can find another one lurking in my community folder. thanks for the quick reply.

Is there any way to make the runway markers draw sooner? I can't judge how high I am until its too late, ie. at SCGC.
    k

The runway markers are not higher than an adult IRL, so it makes sense that you can't spot them until you fly close to the runway. However I have changed the material of the runway of SCGC so it can be spotted a little bit easier than before.

Is there any way to flatten SCGC slightly?

It is almost impossible to land without the small ski jumps getting your airborne again! haha

I have just made a new version where the runway have been reconfigured, give it a try
