Known issues:

  • Engines may fail to start manually if you have a hardware throttle panel. Just cheat by using keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+E" for cold and dark start in case you can't.
  • "Ignition" and "Pitot no heating" warning keeps on whether you keep those switches on or off.
  • Make sure both the left and right engines are running properly if you start simulation directly on runway. Sometimes one of them is out.
  • There are BREAKING CHANGES to liveries since WU5, please change the last line of model.cfg for all your liveries:
    interior=../../atr726/model/KINGAIR_350I_interior.xml
    To:
    interior=../../Asobo_KingAir350/model/KINGAIR_350I_interior.xml
  • If cockpit textures are not loaded properly for custom liveries, modify all the entries in texture.cfg as below:

This is a total remake of ATR72 for FSX by Virtualcol, which was released as payware initially. Animations and flight dynamics have been reproduced from scratch, ground interactions have been added, and all the lights have been made working. It can be cosidered a native FS2020 aircraft rather than just a converted model, and no more "_CVT_" folder would be generated.

The adaptation of the mod is done under formal permission from Virtualcol FS Software®:

The old version by him can still be downloaded here in case you need. There are several breaking changes for liveries, but you can convert them using the converter provided in the download page. (NO GUARANTEE for successful conversion). You can still use the paintkit from virtualcol for creating new textures, but the file extensions have been changed from ".dds" to ".png.dds"

As MS already announced that there will be a new payware ATR series released next year, I was thinking about the future of this mod. I've decided to put the codes (without 3D models and textures for copyright restrictions) for this mod to be managed by GitHub, which allow all of you to submit your improvements, but you are advised to have test flights in challenging airports like Paro and Toncontin to prove the performance of your modifications. the plane totally sucks. You lose control of the plane immediately after takeoff. stalls immediately. beyond the crap.

Impossible to start the ATR72 either by ctlrl+E or by the check-list.

There is already LDG/TAXI lights but those doesnt see in cockpit view? Those you can see only exterior camera.. Any fix for this?

I see several files in AIRPLANE but how to use ATR42...

When I depart the aircraft is extremely sensitive and ends up in a 40 degree climb and ends up stalling hopefully you can fix it in the next update

not getting the displays to turn on.

On a long flight from KOAK to KMCI, I spent some time playing with camera views and controls, and have made the following observations on the ATR-72 600:

  1. The cockpit and internal view model is copied from the Beechcraft King Air, which is a much smaller aircraft than the ATR-72. This can be a bit weird, because the cockpit and internal cabin views are of the King Air, which has 8 windows (each side). When you switch to the External or Showcase views, you see the actual ATR-72, with 26 windows each side. If you move the Pilot's Point of View (in Cockpit mode) to any point outside of the aircraft, you still see only the internal model, and this has no wings, no engines, no landing gear, no tail empennage, etc. The control yoke has "Beechcraft King Air" clearly labelled on it, so your can't possibly mistake this for anything but a copy of a King Air cockpit.
  2. The two analog fuel gauges to the pilot's left are non-functional, although the digital gauges on the MFD do work.
  3. The landing lights don't work, making it difficult to land or taxi the aircraft at night.
  4. Because the interior and cockpit model is actually for the much smaller Beechcraft King Air, I suspect that the Vne and Stall speeds programmed into the PFD might be wrong. While trying to land at KMCI, I made my final approach at 120 knots, appropriate for a twin propjet the size of the ATR, but it didn't want to touch down, and kept floating along in ground effect until speed bled off to 90, which is much more like like the performance of the King Air.
  5. I was able to cruise the plane at 35,000 feet, 10,000 above it's service ceiling, with no issues at all, and the engines dialed back to about 80% of full throttle to keep under the Vne Overspeed warning. Consequently, fuel consumption was unrealistically low. Oakland to Kansas City is 1,300 nm, about 300 nm more than the maximum range of the ATR-72-600, and when I landed, the plane still had about 15% remaining fuel in the tanks.
  6. The real ATR-72-600 cockpit and instrument panels are far more complex than those of the ATR-72, with 5 large LCD panels, two flight management computers, and a huge overhead switch panel, like you would see on the A-321 or 787 Dreamliner.

Overall Impression : The ATR-72-600 is flyable, but until/unless the developer installs a proper ATR-72 cockpit and interior model, I would stick with the default Beechcraft King Air if you want to fly a twin turboprop. You don't have to wonder if the instruments and the flight model are actually matched up properly. Not being able to move the POV cockpit camera outside of the airframe and see an actual ATR-72 is a disappointment.

Despite of having carried out the suggested changes in the model and aircraft cfg the plane is not possible to maintain normal airborne.

    As there are tons of messages for fixing the problem of missing cockpit (although this problem does NOT happen for me), I tried to modify something which I'm not sure whether it fix the problem or not.
    Known issues:
    1. Engines could not start manually. Just use keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+E" for cold and dark start.
    2. "Ignition" and "Pitot no Heating" warning keeps on whether you keep those switches on or off.
    3. Make sure both the left and right engines are running properly if you start simulation directly on runway.
    At last, if it doesn't fix the problem of flying this in your simulator, I have no clue and DON'T ASK ME for a further fix.

    Tweaked landing gear parameters. Note that lift is generated when full reverse thrust is applied during landing after the latest game update, but I think it somehow makes sense as there are a backward moment applied over the CG of the aircraft. Pushing the aircraft gently downward after touchdown is needed.

How to manually convert the liveries?

In case the converter failed to convert your liveries, do the following steps:

  • Navigate to model.cfg, replace the content with the following:

    [model.options]
    withExterior_showInterior=false
    withExterior_showInterior_hideFirstLod=false

    withInterior_showExterior=false

  • Naviagte to texture.cfg, replace the content with the following:

    VCATR_FUSETAIL_T.PNG.DDS.JSON
    VCATR_WINGS_T.PNG.DDS.JSON
    If these are not being generated, just copy from those ATR liveries made by me
  • Navigate to the aircraft.cfg, find the following entries:

    Then replace with the following:

How to use the converter to convert the liveries?

The converter could be found in the download page of this mod.

Upon running the converter, you may see there is only one button in the convert, which ask you to choose the TOP LEVEL FOLDER containing the liveries.

Afterwards, there will be 2 new buttons appeared: "Change Directory" and "Confirm Conversion". If you're sure you've selected the correct folder, then click "Confirm Conversion", otherwise you can choose "Change Directory", then you will be asked to choose another livery folder again.

Why using the KingAir cockpit instead of CJ4?

It is chosen as the cockpit for the new version over CJ4 because it works better with turboprop aircraft. However, in this moment I should admit that we don't have enough resource and know-how for making a custom cockpit. It is far more complicated than those for FSX or before.

Using the cockpit of KingAir instead of CJ4 is a difficult decision, but CJ4 is just a different kind of aircraft from ATR, and the cockpit of CJ4 have no control on what a turboprop have, such as mixture and propeller pitch control. In terms of visual similarity and complexity, an Airbus cockpit would be more similar to ATR, which ATR is a joint venture that Airbus participates. For a fully functional multi-engine turboprop, KingAir is the only choice for all versions of FS2020.

The aircraft lost electricity after several minutes

For those who have hardware throttle panel installed, you should put the engine switch to "OFF" BEFORE a cold and dark start to prevent the starter from being unable to switch off, otherwise the battery will be drained off in several minutes. This is a bug of the Kingair panel.

What are the main differences between a converted FSX aircraft and a native FS2020 aircraft?

A converted one still use the legacy .MDL format for 3D models and .AIR format for aerodynamics. These formats have been replaced by GLTF for 3D models and those parameters in the .AIR file have been migrated into different CFGs. However FS2020 somehow keeps the backward compatibility for these legacy formats, this is how a converted aircraft works.

How to open the rear exit door?

In FS2020, the doors of aircraft need a connection with ground vehicles or jetway to let it open, in the case of ATR the rear exit would be opened at the same time with baggage door upon requesting baggage services from ground frequencies, if there is one.

I don't see the exterior of the aircraft when I look outside from the cockpit

The exterior of the aircraft is hidden in cockpit view for purpose. The position and the window shapes are different between a KingAir cockpit and ATR. If the exterior is turn on, you will find yourself sitting inside the passenger cabin. It is a limitation of this mod.

What can I do if I don't see the cockpit at all?
