Description
The Naval Air Base and Concón Airport, is a small Chilean airport terminal operated by the Chilean Navy and located on the tops of Torquemada hill in Concón in Greater Valparaíso. According to the official nomenclature of the General Directorate of Chilean Civil Aeronautics, it is called Viña del Mar Aerodrome, SCVM. This aerodrome is public.
Its civil air terminal is rarely used, first in the late 1980s/1990s with Ladeco flights, and on a few occasions since then, with operations by airlines such as SKY Airline due to fog episodes at the Arturo Merino Benítez Airport, from Santiago, Chile.
During the Viña del Mar Song Festival, it has received foreign artists who arrive on private flights, such as Luis Miguel, Marc Anthony and Elton John, among others.
In 2008, significant investments were made in this airport that allowed its expansion. As of March 17, 2015, the airport was renamed Base Aeronaval y Aeropuerto Concón.
After years without being used commercially and as a result of efforts by local authorities, finally in July 2020 the M.O.P. announced the tender for the design for its qualification as an airport to operate commercial flights.
