Description
This is a repaint for the FLYING IRON Spitfire. It represents 41 Squadron’s MB882 Spitfire Mk XII, an aircraft flown by Flt Lt Peter Graham from Bolt Head Airfield in 1944. Recreating it offers a small glimpse into the world these pilots knew during a very demanding chapter of the war.
Bolt Head itself was a quiet-looking place, set on the cliffs of South Devon, but during WWII it carried a responsibility that far outweighed its size. As a satellite of RAF Exeter, the airfield supported fighter operations that watched over the south coast and the shipping lanes of the Channel. Pilots stationed there often found themselves on short-notice scrambles, heading out low over the water to intercept threats or protect returning aircraft. The weather could be rough, the visibility unpredictable, and the workload constant—yet the location gave them an important advantage for responding quickly to coastal activity.
The Spitfire Mk XII was well suited to this type of flying. Its Griffon engine gave it strong low-altitude performance and quick acceleration, something pilots appreciated when they needed to be airborne and climbing with little warning. MB882 would have seen this kind of work regularly, and imagining Flt Lt Graham taking off from Bolt Head in 1944 adds a layer of character to the aircraft that goes beyond markings and paint.
Recreating this livery is a way of acknowledging that history—of connecting the aircraft, the airfield, and the people who operated there. It brings together the technical side of the Spitfire with the human stories that shaped its service along the coast of Devon.
