Berlin-Tegel Airport holds a special place in aviation history. For decades, it served as the primary international gateway to Germany's capital, handling millions of passengers annually with its distinctive hexagonal terminal design — a bold piece of 1970s architectural ambition that made it one of the more recognisable airports in Europe. When Brandenburg Airport (BER) finally opened in November 2020 after years of delays, Tegel closed its doors for the last time, ending over 60 years of commercial aviation history at the site. Since then, debate has continued in Berlin about the future of the grounds, but for simulation purposes, the airport has largely remained a forgotten relic — present in Microsoft Flight Simulator's default scenery data but not recognised as an active airport. Developer JohnPaulJ has set out to change that with a new freeware scenery package for MSFS 2024.

Rather than attempting a strictly historical reconstruction, this add-on takes an honest and refreshingly transparent approach. JohnPaulJ describes the scenery as a "modern reimagination" of Tegel — set in an alternate timeline where the Berlin senate chose renovation over closure. Because the package relies entirely on MSFS 2024's existing model library and autogeneration algorithms for terminal buildings, the iconic hexagonal main terminal of the real airport is not faithfully reproduced. The creator is upfront about this limitation, noting that the building models cannot replicate Tegel's distinctive vintage aesthetic. What the scenery does deliver, however, is a fully functional large airport that integrates cleanly into the simulator's existing Berlin scenery and operates at a visual standard consistent with a well-executed autogenerated MSFS 2024 airport.

The scenery activates Tegel as a fully operational airport within MSFS 2024, complete with two runways and more than 30 numbered gates. ILS approaches, AI traffic, and ground operations are all supported natively, meaning the airport slots into the simulator's default flight planning, navigation data, and ATC systems without requiring third-party tools or workarounds. Lighting has been built from scratch, covering approach lights, runway and taxiway lighting, and apron illumination. The airport periphery has also received attention, with the bus hub, parking areas, and surrounding infrastructure recreated based on the developer's own firsthand experience as a passenger at the real Tegel.
