Perched on the northeastern tip of Norway's Finnmark county, Berlevåg is one of those places that feels genuinely remote — a small coastal municipality facing the Barents Sea, where the landscape is stark, the weather is uncompromising, and the local airport plays an outsized role in connecting the community to the wider world. Berlevåg Airport (ENBV) operates a single 1,029-metre runway and is served by Widerøe's Dash 8 turboprops, linking the municipality with other Finnmark communities under the state-owned Avinor network. It handled just under 6,000 passengers in 2016, a figure that underscores how vital these small Norwegian regional airports are to the people who depend on them.
Developer Sauron has now released a comprehensive freeware scenery package for ENBV, built specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and the scope of the work is impressive. Every model and object within the airport boundary has been custom built from scratch, meaning nothing here is a repurposed default asset. The terminal building, ground equipment, and surrounding structures have all been modelled individually.
Sauron has also included custom models of buildings visible from the airport, as well as two notable local landmarks: the large communication mast known as Linken, situated on Kjølnesaksla approximately 1.9 kilometres east-southeast of the airport, and Berlevåg Church, both of which serve as recognisable orientation points in the real-world environment. The harbour area also receives custom maritime navigation marks, complete with correctly placed lights.
Terrain accuracy has been addressed through a custom elevation mesh covering the area around the airport at one-metre resolution, paired with custom aerial imagery for the airfield and its immediate surroundings. Ground markings and airport lighting have been modelled as faithfully as possible to the Norwegian AIP, and runway 06 benefits from the addition of flashing circling lights. One of the more characterful features is the inclusion of dynamic seasonal objects: snow piles in winter, Christmas lights during the festive period, and flower pots in the warmer months — small details that meaningfully differentiate the experience depending on when you choose to fly there.
