Microsoft and Asobo Studio have unveiled World Update 22 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, continuing the simulator’s long-running series of free regional enhancements. This latest update shifts the focus away from cities and countries and instead highlights some of the most iconic natural landscapes in the United States. According to Microsoft, World Update 22 introduces more than 30 U.S. National Parks, bringing enhanced terrain, landmarks, and environmental detail to some of North America’s most recognizable wilderness destinations.
Unlike many previous World Updates that concentrated on individual countries or broader geographic regions, World Update 22 takes a thematic approach. By focusing on national parks, the development team appears to be emphasizing exploration, sightseeing, bush flying, and low-altitude VFR operations rather than urban environments or major transportation hubs. The announcement arrives shortly after the release of World Update 21: Australia, which raised the level of geographic detail across the continent and demonstrated Microsoft’s continued commitment to improving the virtual representation of the world through free content updates
While Microsoft has not yet published a complete list of all featured locations at the time of writing, the inclusion of more than 30 national parks indicates one of the largest collections of natural landmarks ever delivered within a single World Update. The focus on protected landscapes aligns well with the simulator’s strengths, particularly its advanced terrain rendering, aerial imagery, photogrammetry technologies, and continuously evolving environmental systems.

The announcement also included a preview of future content beyond World Update 22. Microsoft revealed that National Championship Air Races are scheduled to arrive later in fall 2026, expanding the simulator’s activity offerings and adding another competitive aviation experience to the platform. World Update 22 will be available as a free download for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 users.
