    Updates

Microsoft Flight Simulator Sim Update 3 Beta has finally arrived, bringing a comprehensive overhaul to the game's control system that many virtual pilots have been eagerly awaiting. The beta introduces version 1.5.1.0, which particularly focuses on addressing persistent input lag issues and improving controller calibration for a more responsive flying experience. Additionally, this update includes a significant yet undocumented feature – local content downloads. While not mentioned in the official patch notes, the MSFS beta now allows users to install default aircraft and airports locally instead of streaming them.

    Major Controls Overhaul

Microsoft has officially released the Sim Update 3 Beta, version 1.5.1.0, bringing a substantial overhaul to the flight simulator's control interface and responsiveness. The 3.6 GB update introduces numerous improvements aimed at addressing longstanding issues reported by virtual pilots since launch. The most notable change in SU3 Beta is the redesigned control mapping interface. Users who previously struggled with the cumbersome controls menu will find significant improvements in navigation speed and organization. The update has fixed excessive load times previously experienced when switching between control options.

A powerful new import/export functionality allows pilots to save and share control configurations through XML files. This feature enables users to:

    • Create distinct presets for different controller types
    • Export configurations with custom naming conventions
    • Import previously saved profiles across installations

However, some users have noted that deleting or duplicating presets can sometimes cause confusion in the interface, requiring a complete restart to properly refresh the system.

Fixes for Input Lag and Controller Calibration

The Sim Update 3 Beta directly addresses one of the most persistent complaints  – control input lag. Previously, many pilots reported a half-second delay between physical inputs and on-screen response, making precise maneuvers difficult, especially during critical phases like landing. Consequently, Microsoft has reworked how control inputs are processed, aiming to match the responsiveness found in competing simulators and FAA-approved training devices. The update also tackles issues with controller calibration, particularly focusing on making the movement of in-cockpit yokes match physical controllers more accurately. Before this update, users with devices like the Fulcrum One and Honeycomb yokes often noticed discrepancies between their physical inputs and what appeared on screen. Many had resorted to hiding in-cockpit controls, which particularly damaged immersion for VR users.

Sim Update 3 Quietly Enables Local Content Downloads

While major control improvements take center stage in the Sim Update 3 Beta, the beta version discreetly introduces a long-requested capability that marks a significant shift in how Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 handles content delivery. The Beta now enables you to download and install core assets directly to your local machine. This fundamental change allows simmers to store:

    • Default aircraft and liveries
    • Airport facilities and terminals
    • World updates and regional content
    • Base content (approximately 217GB)
    • AI traffic systems

For many users, this addresses a major limitation of the sim's initial release. After installation, users on the official forums noticed that "terminal buildings look way more detailed even from a distance" and "everything was there immediately in high detail" when loading into airports. Microsoft and Asobo developers confirmed the feature is "not listed because it's still unfinished",  explaining its absence from official documentation.

    Why Local Downloads Matter

The ability to download content locally represents a crucial advancement for the Microsoft Flight Simulator Sim Update 3 Beta, addressing fundamental issues that have plagued many users since launch. This feature tackles several key problems that significantly impacted player experience. Unfortunately, the streaming-focused approach of MSFS 2024 created substantial barriers for players with limited internet access. Users reported initial loading times stretching up to 10-15 minutes, with many experiencing frustrating delays stuck at "5% Loading Language" for nearly 7 minutes.

Prior to MSFS 2024, the previous iteration handled content differently. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 primarily utilized local installations, making it accessible for users with unreliable internet connections. Unlike the current version's initial streaming-only approach, MSFS 2020 stored core assets on users' machines, reducing dependency on constant high-speed connectivity.

Notably, local content storage delivers tangible performance improvements beyond just solving connectivity issues:

    • Reduced load times from 14 minutes to just 3 minutes in some cases
    • Decreased stuttering when approaching detailed areas like cities
    • Elimination of blurry textures that gradually improve over time
    • Smoother experience with high-detail aircraft that previously required downloading 1.4 GB during flight

Indeed, many users identified a direct correlation between data streaming spikes and in-game stutters.

    Conclusion

The comprehensive controls overhaul directly addresses longstanding issues that frustrated virtual pilots since launch. The redesigned interface, coupled with smoother joystick and yoke responses, fundamentally transforms the simulation experience from sluggish to responsive. Perhaps equally important, though initially undocumented, the local content download capability marks a major philosophical shift. This feature essentially solves critical problems for users with limited connectivity while simultaneously reducing stutters and improving load times across all systems.

Overall, Sim Update 3 Beta signals a positive direction for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Although still in beta, these technical improvements lay groundwork for a more accessible, responsive, and enjoyable simulation platform that better serves all types of virtual pilots.

Problem solved CTD causes SU3 Beta...These are deliberate actions!!! The new Sim Update 3 Beta introduces a number of changes and new features but followed by a number of bugs that cause CTD....It doesn't make sense to fix one thing and spoil another, this is to make it obvious that Asobo is doing something! And they are really only focusing on their paid add-ons for MSFS 2024! Doesn't anyone see this! In my case, after upgrading to SU3 B, entering the tablet, even before the flight, when trying to read any map, causes an exit to the desktop CTD!!! I went back to SU2 and am waiting for the fixes....

You do realize its called BETA for a reason? If you cant cope with the crashes and bugs, please stick with the SU2 and download SU3 only when its finished. Beta means its not ready nor stable. Want to be a beta tester? Then go report your findings on their beta forum.

Blimey. At this rate by the time of its one year anniversary, 2024 may even have reached the point 2020 was already at.

Its already well beyond 2020. Anyone who says it isn’t is just being disingenuous,

Exactly, i really don’t get it. I don’t think I’ve had a single CTD in 2024 since sim update 1. I am guessing those that do are using addons for 2020 that were last updated 4 years ago.

2024 is still too bad and unplayable. It needs dozens of updates to reach at least the quality of 2020 so far… For me 2024 is some kind of beta demo version.

I have an ultra system and high sped internet. What helps is to logon to the fastest server and have a large rolling cache file. I gladly will now load what I own, ever though it is only positive and negative charges. I was lucky enough to install on the first day and solve some of the bugs right away. My load to launch the game is under 2minutes, then about another two minutes to launch a flight. I’m ready to start deleting some 2020 files, as I ‘ve only flown 2020 a few times since 2024 launch. All of VB’s SoCal airports carried over Fine.

Dont complaint about CTD if you are clearly using a beta service mate. so dont be a ducking dick

Would you be able to provide some specifics? Because as far as the major are concerned 2024 is already far superior to 2020. What makes it unplayable? How would you reconcile that with the hundreds if not thousands of videos on Youtube of people using it perfectly well?

I have been an MSFS Beta tester since the very beginning. If something works well from the beginning then why correct it to make it not work in SU3 Beta already! It makes no sense. Fix one thing at the expense of spoiling the next new fix!!!

It might be another fix/change that breaks something else. You’re a responsible beta tester so go report it to the developers now.

You don't know then don't write on this topic!!! I report....

I always start a new installation of MSFS 2024 beta from the very beginning. With an empty community folder.... I do not have any add-ons installed from 2024 and nor any add-ons in 2020.... And I do not prey on other people's experience just try to solve and improve something myself.... Not like the vast majority of recipients of not their own but someone else's....

exactly this..just bitter, cloud-yelling folk with no reasoning

dont worry about it, he either lies or theres something wrong with his system

I submit and my submissions are accepted but I get the impression that nothing is being done about it. I have the impression that this whole beta is just to appease from frustrated aviation fans. Default A320 aircraft in MSFS 2024 has had the same problem with the dimming blur from the very beginning and it has not been fixed. When pressed in the Payload tablet, the window blind opens.... Such a simple bug but not fixed from the very beginning of the release of MSFS 2024. Seemingly nonsense but in my opinion they should just start fixing MSFS2024 from such nonsense and not create new problems. Well I am going to “fight” further....

The largest issue remains the streaming. So I was happy when the beta dropped only to learn that it does not play with the pmdg 777. Currently each landing is a stutter show. Things have improved but so far its not really that different from 2020. The physics remains more arcadie than x-plane (its still good but the behavior is defined by parameters and not the geometry of the model).

ya no esta en xbox insider.

for many su 3 is what makes msfs24 usable in the first place. Streaming the airports always causes so much stutters that it becomes impossible to control the plane for me. So they published a game that barely works and you defend the million dollar company ?

2024 is superior t0 2020. I have but one issue…when will we be able to save flights?

    FS2020 is superior.

Imagine that…..still nothing about model matching. Still stuck with a game that we spent $200 bucks on and can’t even see friends in different planes and different liveries in an MMO Sim. I long for the days where a game actually got released completed as an improvement over the previous version. Words cant express how aggravating these devs are and the people that desperately try to justify 24. Its sad honestly. And it really bothers me to have to speak like this about the sim, but we are left with no choice but to complain to the ether since no one seems to be really listening to anyone. And for anyone that wishes to say I’m being disingenuous or whatever other term they use their thesaurus to come up with, let me just say….you make yourself look foolish for cow-towing and not speaking truth. Tell it like it is or keep your mouth shut. There is NO excuse for it to take so many SU’s to get it back to 2020 playability with just better graphics. NONE

Glad to hear we will be able to install/download our content like we have for the last 25 years instead of streaming.

From where this game started off( never should have been released when it was) to where it is now, it’s come a long ways. I’m really enjoying Sim Update 3 with really good performance. The loading times are super quick now and it’s butter smooth. I love the new download as opposed to just streaming feature as well. Does it still have a ways to go? Certainly, but for me at least it’s a bit more playable as opposed to total aggravation and frustration. My 20 year old son that only flies MS2020, has been spending time on the new sim lately with the latest two updates. That says a lot because he is PICKY!

Unfortunately, due to cdts when approaching airports, had to uninstall the su3 beta.

I want to express my gratitude to you, Flightsim.to Thank you for creating this wonderful resource! Despite your huge popularity, you remain as polite and patient to each participant. This is truly admirable! Stay like this always! And be a legitimate, global center of creativity for all fans of the virtual sky! MSFS2024 is a wonderful and exciting simulator! There are, of course, a number of shortcomings, but they are primarily related to issues of investing in professionals. I want to express my appreciation to ASOBO for giving the simulator the modern look that many have been waiting for from Microsoft for so long. The creators' love for this genre is obvious. This is not just a simulator, but a real work of art. Thank you for your hard work! You're really good! It's probably not easy for you right now. May the universe give you even more strength, patience and time so that you can overcome all difficulties on the way to perfection of your masterpieces! You are the best! Thanks!

Hi Folks! Is it also now possible to proper download FS2002 - purchases like the FSR 500 or the LEAR, as they are sooo big files and are blurry when they get streamed only? This is my only withdraw still from going completelx to FS2024.

Why, as of May 29, 2025, is the SIM update beta 3 no longer available in the Xbox Insider Hub application? If I had previously downloaded it and unsubscribed from the trial, I rejoined and it was still there. I withdrew again due to problems with the PC and when I rejoined, oh surprise... it is no longer available. Does anyone know anything about it?

If you enjoy speed, enjoy the sensation of flying like the wind, and are constantly trying to push yourself, speedstars is a game you simply must play.

I’m pretty sure they’re working on fixes for most of the issues we noted. They won’t work harder or faster the more we complain, because it’s a game and no lives will be lost when it doesn’t fully work, so no dev will work overtime to fix it. Depending on what you do, “just better graphics” are quite a huge deal though. I just bought an addon of the same aircraft my flight school uses, and being able to VFR fly it just like in real life is quite a feat. I happily deal with the anooying controls menu, and some loading times (although for me 2020 and 24 are the same there, both take forever). But yes, I fully agree that we expected more. The career mode is much more boring than anticipated, and of course I too expected similar performance to 2020.

Hurrah more responsive inputs - I just thought my flying was bad 👀

Just using the beta 3 has already seen a world of difference. Cant wait. Ill stay on beta until release.
