Finally here: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024! — A sentiment that should evoke excitement among virtual aviators worldwide. Instead, the much-anticipated release has left thousands of players grounded, frustrated, and wondering why yet another AAA title has launched in an incomplete state. With nearly 3,000 reviews on Steam, over 85% of them harshly negative, Microsoft Flight Simulator is off to a rocky start. Common complaints include endless loading screens, missing content, server meltdowns, and bugs aplenty. The issue of broken game launches is hardly unique to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 though. It’s a troubling pattern in the gaming industry, where increasingly ambitious projects are released under immense time pressure, often prioritizing deadlines and profitability over quality and polish.

    The Launch Day Turbulence

Microsoft and Asobo Studio’s attempt to bring us the "most ambitious simulator ever" quickly nosedived into chaos. From 8-hour-long loading times to game-breaking server crashes, only a fraction of players could even experience the game on launch day. Missing aircraft, unresponsive menus, and incompatibility with older add-ons compounded the frustration. The game’s own development team acknowledged issues ranging from a mouse cursor glitch that prevents signing in on Steam to content tied to premium editions not appearing until multiple restarts.  This paints a picture of a game released undercooked and rushed out the door. The most egregious oversight? A lack of robust server infrastructure, which the team themselves admitted was ill-equipped to handle launch-day traffic. Despite testing for up to 200,000 concurrent users during alpha phases, the reality of a full-scale launch overwhelmed their systems.

    Community-shared meme on Reddit

    An Industry Problem

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is merely the latest in a long line of high-profile games that stumbled at the starting gate. The cycle has become painfully familiar: massive pre-release hype, an unfinished product, and a post-launch apology tour filled with vague promises to “do better”. Developers often cite the sheer complexity of modern games as a reason for these failures. While that is undoubtedly true, it also raises the question: Why not delay launches until products are genuinely ready? The answer likely lies in the economics of gaming. Deadlines tied to fiscal quarters, marketing schedules, and shareholder expectations frequently override quality concerns. It’s no coincidence that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, a marquee release for Microsoft, arrived just ahead of the holiday shopping season. Yet, when the pursuit of profit compromises the player experience, it risks eroding trust in even the most beloved franchises.

    The Fallout

The fallout from Microsoft Flight Simulator's botched launch is significant. Negative reviews on Steam are a testament to player dissatisfaction, with many calling for refunds. Social media platforms and Discord channels have become echo chambers of complaints. Meanwhile, the game's developers, in a YouTube video addressing the problems, acknowledged the missteps but offered limited solutions.

Jörg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Asobo CEO Sebastian Wloch explained that new systems like the Career Mode and updated missions overloaded a server-side cache system, which buckled under player demand.

    If Not Microsoft, Then Who?

While transparency is commendable, it’s difficult to see this as anything other than poor planning. If Microsoft — a tech giant with unparalleled resources, extensive experience, and a dedicated studio like Asobo at the helm — cannot execute a smooth release for a flagship title, then who can? Smaller studios with tighter budgets and fewer resources certainly face even greater challenges. Yet the question arises: Should players continue to excuse these missteps when solutions are well within reach?

For instance, staggered release schedules based on regions could have mitigated server strain. Pre-loading core files, paired with server-based activation on launch day, could have significantly reduced bottlenecks. Microsoft could also have invested more heavily in temporary server capacity to handle the expected surge. Mistakes can happen; developers are human, and unforeseen issues are a reality in complex projects. However, when even 8 hours after launch — or, in some cases, an entire day — basic functionality remains elusive, it reflects a higher-level failure. This is especially glaring given Microsoft and Asobo’s prior experience with the tumultuous launch of the 2020 version, where many of the same issues plagued players.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 2042, and Diablo III are infamous examples of disastrous launches. In Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red promised a polished experience but released a buggy and, in some cases, unplayable game. Battlefield 2042 was riddled with broken features and performance issues, eroding trust in a franchise once known for its excellence. Even Blizzard, a veteran studio, faced a firestorm during Diablo III’s launch, where server errors ("Error 37") became the meme of the day. These cases highlight a systemic problem: the prioritization of hitting release dates over delivering functional, quality products.

The gaming industry must shift its approach. Games should not be judged solely on their launch day, but companies must recognize that first impressions matter. A robust pre-launch testing infrastructure, phased rollouts, and learning from past mistakes could prevent the cycle of broken promises. Players don’t expect perfection, but they deserve products that, at the very least, work on day one. Unfortunately, Microsoft and Asobo missed that mark.

    Can This Be Fixed?

The good news is that the issues, though significant, are fixable. Microsoft has promised swift updates to address server reliability, backward compatibility, and bug fixes. They’ve also reiterated their commitment to listening to player feedback. But the damage to the game’s reputation is already done. The question is whether players will stick around long enough for the simulator to live up to its potential.

    Don't Panic: The Bigger Picture

What Microsoft Flight Simulator’s launch reveals is an industry in crisis. Gamers are tired of paying full price for what often feels like early-access experiences. Developers and publishers must recognize that short-term savings and rushed launches only lead to long-term reputational damage. For now, the skies remain turbulent. Let’s hope the team at Microsoft and Asobo can steady the plane and deliver the experience they promised.

While the frustration surrounding the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is valid, it’s important to remember that this is not the end of the world for the simulator or its community. Before rushing to demand refunds, players should consider that server issues and bottlenecks are often temporary and likely to stabilize once the initial surge has passed. Microsoft and Asobo have shown with MSFS2020 that they are committed to improving their product post-launch, consistently adding new features, fixing bugs, and expanding the simulator's capabilities. If they continue this level of dedication with MSFS2024, players will not only have a polished experience in the near future but also a simulator that they can enjoy and grow with for years to come. Yes, the failed launch day is disappointing, but the value of what the simulator offers — with its global scenery, detailed aircraft, and an ever-evolving platform — is undeniably strong. For those who can weather this storm, the value for money of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will likely prove to be worth the wait.

Either way, we will be the ones to ‘correct’ the bad product that is the MFS2024. WE the users are the ones giving money to the developers, in this case Microsoft and Asobo!!! And these two companies disregard us and they disregard us hugely!!! Let's NOT be made non-stop in the grey!!!

Dont worry... yesterday, I was lucky to get in to the sim... The sim is broke, the controls config is a nightmare (I have Thrustmaster airbus joystick and gases, Honeycomb alpha and bravo, Saitek pedals... impossible to take off with a C172.. even the graphics are the same or worse... 20 minutes and quit the sim... maybe in 6 months is flyable.

Yeserday was a prime example of businesses who put profits above everything else. No matter was happens the execs at these two companies still got paid. So in a nutshell they promised everyone a new car and gave everone just the drivers seat and nothing else. For those who purchased the game, I wish they could sue these companies for not delivering what they had promised....

Glad I didn't jump right into this nonsense. I was about to wait for the week end till the madness has quiet down. I'll probably wait much much more than that. I'm not paying 140€ for a sim that doesn't start and premium content that's not even there ! FS2020 suits 100% of my needs right now and I don't forget it took over a year to stabilize at start, and more than 2 to optimize.

Currently...it's been a cash grab! to coin a phrase "take the money and run!" while they might not be running...more like dragging us along on a all to painful, and from the end users experience disastrous launch! Excuses, and that is what they are here. "We didn't anticipate this volume...the cache crashed...we are working on fixes...bear with us..." it's nothing short of a problem that MS and Asobo have allowed to happen, and the end user is left holding the bag. This morning, for myself 15% activating packages in 15 minutes. SMH.

Why buy the first day of launch?. MSFS2020 is a mature product working fine and there is no immediate reason to upgrade to the new version other than the "fad" value of the product at launch. I am going to sit tight for 2-4 weeks until MSFS2024 has settled down and enjoy it as it should at that time... It is not as though is a limited-edition game that only the first few will enjoy.

DO NOT BUY YET. Its the first time I have ever pre ordered a game , waited months for its release only to find your in a Q to join servers. I was patience I reinstalled it three times thinking the problem was with me. Tried for seven hours then the excitement changed to frustration and anger. I asked for a refund which they excepted very quickly they took the money so fast but 3-5 days to go back back on card is taking the piss even more. Never will I pre order a game again . And to be fair I don't know if I will buy this game again in the future. They knew how many games they had sold pre ordered and you would think they would estimate sales on the day but to launch without enough servers and missing content that I have heard the lucky ones would did get online where missing is appalling. So back to 2020 for a good while yet

Flight Sim user since first edition so many years ago. It is true this launch is a disaster, But, it is a disaster for only those who are so impatient they can't wait a day or a week to fly 2024. What the Heck! Flight Sim 2020 works very well and is, at least at this point, far superior in actual performance and usage, that is found in 2024. I am perfectly comfortable waiting a few more days to launch my version of 2024. What does not make sense to me is: Irate users are questioning "why was 2024 launched in such a primitive and unusable state?" They are also the users who are demanding that the 2024 sim be functioning perfectly now that they have downloaded it. So - what would they have said when Asobo/MS delayed the 2024 launch by three or four months as those users implied with the first question?

I totally agree with this article. For a platform so dependent on servers reliability, and for a society with such an infrastructure (Microsoft), it is problematic not to have evaluated earlier the impact of such a release.

Hello everyone, I am divided in my assessment of the initial chaos. On the one hand, I find the trend described in the article of launching unfinished products on the market very worrying. On the other hand, I understand that they can't (or don't want to) scale up the server architecture at will just so that the one-off (!) rush on release day runs smoothly. I would actually expect a little more patience from us users (myself included). Nevertheless, I am curious to see when the initial difficulties will be resolved. Not to scold, but more to smile about my experience: Even on the second day after the release, I can hardly get in, and when I do get in, it can only be started from certain points. East of EDDS it looks grotty, the building blocks don't turn into a reasonably attractive landscape even after a long wait. The motorway below the plane can only be guessed at because there are cars on the road. Their driving behaviour does not seem to have improved one iota in terms of plausibility and smoothness compared to FS 2020. They should have worked on this in the meantime rather than placing sheep in front of our house in Stuttgart, which a) don't belong there and b) move even more awkwardly in the simulation than the cars. Oh yes, I almost forgot: The poor plane's wings fell off during the flight, but the breakage points are shown in great detail. (Perhaps I accidentally dropped them due to a previously common shortkey for perspective changes). Despite the tragic loss, ‘Icon’ continues to fly with unshakeable stability. A physical miracle that almost saved the lives of the pilot and his companion if they hadn't got stuck on a scenic building block when landing on the Hahnweide (EDST). So there's still a lot to do, I'm curious to see whether this is ‘only’ due to the first rush. In joyful anticipation, Heinz-HermannTranslated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Thanks for this honest review. I cant believe we have to do the settings config for our peripherals. I have Honeycomb products and thrustmaster as well and when the Alpha came out I was very irritated that we had to do it then. Figured it was just because of the alpha. Gonna wait about 6 months for MSFS24. My 2020 is running so great now, its not a big deal. to walk around, Ill just do the drone camera really slow.

I know it's cheap of me to chime in here but... Really, I have little to no sympathy for those of you who complain. At least for those that were around for MSFS2020 launch which was equally as abysmal both in terms of server performance and in terms of product quality. Even more so, if you pre-ordered, you are part of the problem. Why the heck would they fix anything if they got your money already? Asobo has a clear track record of needing at least 3+ years in public beta to polish a product into not-even-AAA state. All the warning signs were there. You decided to fuel MS's policy of "release now, fix later... maybe" with your wallet. Again. So that's on you.
Clearly, I have not bought, so I have no stakes in 2024. Flew in '20 today, and as always for the past year or so, it worked quite well, apart from the still clumsy menus and the other minor stuff they'll never fix, of course.
What infuriates me, however, is that this proves how much the whole plot of "we need a reset of 2020 to fix the big issues, so please don't be mad at us if we charge you again, okay (even if we really tried hard to hint otherwise before)" was just empty talk. Congrats, MS, you've had your reset. Great work here. All that 2020 and 2024 pre-order money combined, well spent. This is Asobo, apparently, at its best, building the best product they are able to from the ground up.

At the moment - two days after the release - the game is practically unusable, therefore unenjoyable! I can only hope that the problems are really only temporary and will be solved in a short time. One thing is for sure: I will NEVER again buy a game within six months of its release!

I'm going to wait until 2025 for msfs 2024. It's not like I'm going to get my money's worth at msfs 2024 its just that I've been playing msfs 2020 for over 2 years now and I want to at least continue my passion for aviation in msfs 2020 as its more stable than msfs 2024 is. If ever I'd like the problems of msfs 2024 both loading and performance wise to be fixed 1st just like what I did with msfs 2020 before. Props to the developers for giving a 97% loading time game to most players. Even though it has become a meme msfs 2024 is still the flight sim I'll be switching too in the coming months.

Improvement in sight? After posting a rather frustrating screenshot yesterday, here are a few promising ones. The view of the Stubaital and the Pinnistal show that the developers have not exaggerated with their praised trees and ground vegetation. The change of season from summer to late autumn also comes across well. Admittedly, I waited a long time for the textures to finish downloading. But once that a propper downloadspeed becomes the norm, it's worth the wait for good bandwidth.*** Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) ***

For me this is a NO SURPRISE. Probably because I am 67 years old but.....why people don't learn from previous experience? Do you know a release that was not plagued by the same problems? Nobody dies if you don't play the first day of release, keep quite and wait. I purchaised MSFS2020 after six months during wich I flew in XP11 without stress and I will do the same even for MSFS2024. Until yesterday MSFS2020 was a good sim, run finally smooth for me and there are plenty of good aircrfats and scenery that I have purchaised and not tested yet. I have beeen a beta tester of a CAD company for 20 years and I will not do it for Microsoft, this time unpaid. I have seen some video and apart from the launch video I don't see so much difference. It is not a revolution, Better grass and trees, a tablet in the cabin, better texture on rivers, the possibility to walk ......for what? It is a flying simulator or a walking simulator?Nice things, but ... there is the urgent need to try it? Maybe for content creators yes (they need more and more subscribers and visualizations), but for most simmers not. Remain calm, don't stress yourself for a game.

When the video game industry falls into the hands of investors who know little or nothing about the industry, but only want to win the last as if it were the stock market, it will start to fall and will stop being attractive to players due to its mediocre quality. But very interesting for bondholders and smoke sellers. I no longer believe in Early Access or crowd funding because it is very likely that behind them there are only deceitful capitalists who only want to empty pockets, sell the garbage camouflaged as wonderful and then get rid of this burden before it falls. I know that Microsoft is not that kind of industry due to the background it has, but it has enough attitudes that make one doubt its intentions towards players. A lot of marketing and little result.

It is very difficult to understand this in the world of immediacy. Everything now, now! Today I create my company, tomorrow I have 20 branches and next month I am present all over the world. If this does not work, then it is a total failure and the company is useless. And all this is fueled by thousands of StartUps that "accelerate" the company. What the H.. is this acceleration? You accelerate the monetary value and leave behind the experience and learning. The value of a company is the time invested (TIME), not only the money of the bondholders who want to make profits at the nanosecond.

DONT BUY YET .I was so excited and pre-ordered , I'm in the UK and tried at 4pm kept getting stuck at 97% loading so I restarted it three times. then it started only to be stuck in a Q so I reinstalled it three times thinking it was my end. I tried until 1am then frustration when to anger so I put in for a refund of my £130 which they excepted straight away they took the money instantly but took three days to pay it back. Microsoft dropped the ball on this one they knew how many had pre-ordered and how many used 2020 so they should have known a lot of those would transition so the servers should have been able to cope . Then I have heard of those lucky enough to get on had content missing. It should never have been released unless it was fit for purpose . Don't know if I will ever rebuy it in the future. sorry but this should never ever have been on the cloud, we should have been able to download it. The Azure cloud is pure garbage, slow connections. F1 (Formula 1) moved away from these jokers and onto the superior aws cloud from Amazon. which ever clown, muppet, expletive came up with the idea of even having this on the cloud, should have been sacked then and there. Most people around the world have very poor internet connections...and yet they would have known this and still put it on the cloud. It's easy to fix, give us the ability to download the game we bought, if people want to continue the fiasco of playing on the cloud let them, but we have paid a hefty price for the aviator edition to not even be able to play it. I use Glasswire and can see the speed of the download / streaming from the azure cloud when in my plane in msfs2024 and the download speed is laughable. It never even exceeded 100kbps. At this download speed from the server, it would have taken weeks! for the assets, models etc to download but not before it timed out each time despite having very high speed fibre internet. We should be given the option of a full download of the flight sim, simple as that. I feel like I have been robbed.

Gentlemen, I refuse to buy MSFS2024 for several reasons. The first, and for me a very important one, is the cost of having to upgrade my hardware. Right now I can use MSFS2020, and the truth is that I can fly without problems. The second is that MSFS2024 reminds me too much of MSFS2020 in its beginnings, with its instability problems, servers, etc. I suspected that there would be problems with the servers, and more so when it was announced that there would no longer be as many downloads to local storage as with MSFS2020, and that even cities, planes and other content would be downloaded when using the simulator. Too much server load in my opinion, and even more so with terrain, scenaries, airports, etc. The instability problems are to a certain extent normal in a launch, but I remember the problems that the improvements of the following two years gave us in MSFS2020, just for including compatibility with XBox. I'm going to wait, and I'll wait until the forums barely mention DTCs, device configuration issues, performance, or servers. Out of the four years of life that MSFS2020 has, the first two years were time lost due to the number of flights I missed due to a DTC, or hours lost in having to reconfigure devices, or solve a compatibility problem with addons. I suffered too many frustrations, which led me to give up using it for periods of months. I will never go through that again!!!

Agreed. I give it more though like 6-12 months before I jump in. I remember watching Squirrel tutorials for MSFS2020 and when I joined two years later it was a different sim with different tools even the interface looked different. This will happen as well with MSFS2024.

MSFS2024 made for the XBox consol is passable if in career mode and flying alone, however in PC, what a mess and appears to be categorized as beta at best. It sure isn't a release version and is not stable in any regard. It sure can't be used as a "sim" in multiplayer groups.
Anyways: hopefully the 3rd party devs can work their magic to fix this mess. After several attempts, and one more test on Wednesday afternoon (27th) I predict that on Thursday I will be returning my msfs2024 premium deluxe version back to Xbox support for a full refund. Again, it maybe passible on the xbox console but it sure isn't on pc - that is at least until they get their inadequate server issues fixed (or supplemented).
After the MSFS2020 release four years ago which was in a similar beta version at it's release one might think that they would know the user community's high demand for flight simulation and have their ducsk in a row, so to speak to ensure that all would go smoothly on their server side the also not release a substandard product like 2024has been released.
(It took a few years to get msfs 2020 to a stable sim platform and the same it would appear for the msfs2024 . (My msfs2020 with enhanced shadowing and a few simple graphics filtering settings, after four years, now performs and looks so much better than the "new and improved" state of the art, way overrated but widely publicized msfs2024).
I bought on release day but sad to say, I should have waited at least a year!!!!!

It is a mess. Still today and I have never seen such an amount of buggy aircraft. This career mode is ridiculous. You can not fly any mission without certification. But one good thing, I can use the MSFS2024 online flight planner to view Lido maps wuhahahhaha.I recommend to wait 1 year before buying it and then maybe it is fine to play or sim.But just my opinion.

I agree completely with this article. I can't understand how MS/ASOBO could post recently that the server problems are about to be solved. Since day one (yes, I'd been an early bird) I got every time messages about limited bandwidth and sometimes I saw a landscape that rather looked like FS9 when flying low and slow - even more blurry.
Okay, I started using MSFS with FS2 (being a test for IBM-compatibility of my first PC) and can remember the time that each second version was close to crap. This time it seems to be rather a planned disaster. It's not only the bandwidth, but as well the user interface. Even MSFS2020 kept the mostly used keyboard commands, in MSFS2024 I neither can't find a logic nor a reason for changing some settings.
